A DETAILED DEMONSTRATION PLAN IN SCIENCE

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

1. Identify the parts and functions of the digestive system,

2. Describe the path of food as it passes through the body, and

3. Appreciate the importance of each part of Digestive System.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: The Digestive System

Sub-topic: Organs of the Digestive System

References: Science for Daily Life Use Book

Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, picture, envelopes, markers & papers

Class, do you want to play a game?
Let’s play the game Food Roulette (Game of Food). One student will read the mechanics:

I was doing house chores and I think of…… “Jackfruit”

Round 2
I went to a mall, while driving I am thinking of….. “Ice

Are you hungry now? - Yes we are!

In a little while it will be lunch already.

B. Lesson Proper

PUZZLE
Okay class. Don’t return to your seats just yet. Let’s do
another activity. Here are 5 envelopes, choose one
representative of your group and proceed in front. (5 students approaches in front)

Choose one envelope, and then proceed to your (Students return to their groups with own envelopes)
respective groups.
(Students discussion)
Now open your envelopes and identify the specific
image and discuss its function in 3 minutes.

Okay, times up! What have you noticed with the picture? - They are part of the digestive system sir.

Very good class! Now I will give you another minute to (Students will paste their output in the arrangement they
interact with other groups and arrange the pictures know in front.)
together with your output according to the proper flow of
digestion and paste it in front.

What do you think is the first step? - It is in the mouth Sir.

Ok! Let’s see if the arrangement you do is correct.

(Slide show will appear)
- The mouth offers an entry of food into the body.
Where does digestion start? It is also where the mechanical breakdown
begins.
Very good class! You are right.
It is really the mouth that comes first in the process of
digestion.
May we call one representative from the group to discuss - It is the esophagus sir!
their output regarding the function of the mouth?

Good job!!! And now let’s follow the food as it passes

through the? What connects the mouth from the - The esophagus transacts food from the mouth to
stomach? the stomach by a movement. (Student discuss
their output)
Very Good!
May I call the representative of esophagus group?
That’s correct! In addition to that let us read and discuss
what is on the slide.
(Slide show will flash on screen)
- The stomach further forms the food into smaller
May we call in the next group to present their output? portions and contains hydrochloric acid that aids
digestion and destroy the bacteria present in the
ingested food. It also has pepsin that breakdown
protein into smaller forms.

Yes! That’s correct. Now, where does the food go after

passing the stomach? - In small intestine sir!

That’s right!
May I ask the next group to discuss to us the function of the
small intestine? - The small intestine is where the pancreatic juices
aids the digestion of protein, carbohydrates and
fats. It is also the longest part of the digestive

Furthermore in the small intestine, bile acts on the food.

Bile is produced on the liver and stored in the gallbladder. It

breakdown fat’s into smaller droplets. You get it?

Ok, let us now listen to the last group as they discuss their
output. - The large intestine is the last part of the
gastrointestinal tract. Water is absorbed here and
the remaining waste material is stored as feces
Yes, that’s true. before being removed by defecation
The large intestine is also known as large bowel.
It is also where absorption of water occurs. The remains
after water has been absorbed are now called STOOL or
FECES that will be stored in the rectum then excreted by
the anus.

From our activity, what then is the function of the digestive

system? - They are responsible for breakdown and
absorption of nutrients from food thereby
bringing energy for the body.

For additional information, let me show to you a short

presentation about the digestive system, its parts and
(Students look and listen carefully to the short clip
functions.
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og5xAdC8EUI) presentation via AVP. Various interactions takes place
from the class.)

C. Generalization

Alright class, based upon the short clip presented what have
you understood? - Digestion involves a series of process and needs
aid from other glands and organs for it to do its
job properly.
- It is composed primarily of the mouth,
esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large
intestine and rectum.

So, any question from the class? Any suggestion or

clarification?
- None sir!
Alright, thanks for lending your ears and time with me
class. Now it’s time for our short quiz.
D. Evaluation

All animals need to eat _______________ to get

_______________ to live. But in order to use this food, they
have to break it down in a process called _______________.
And so, all animals have a group of connected organs called
the digestive _______________.

In humans, the process of digestion begins in the

_______________ where food is _______________ into
small pieces by the teeth. The _______________ helps by
moving these pieces around. There pieces are covered by
_______________, or spit. The saliva makes the food
slippery so that it is easier to _______________. It also helps
to break down the food.

Once the food is swallowed, it passes through the

_______________, which is like a gate that sends food into
the _______________ and air into the lungs. The food travels
down the esophagus and into the _______________. Once in
the stomach the food is mixed with _______________ and
crushed some more.

After spending some time in the stomach, the food is

sent into the _______________ where nutrients are
_______________. The _______________ helps by
producing some digestive juices called bile. Next, the
remaining food goes into the _______________ where the
_______________ are absorbed. The remaining food is called
_______________ and it is pushed into the
_______________ where it waits before leaving the body.

E. Assignment

1. List down (3) digestive system disorders. Write down

the causes and the ways to treat them.
2. Bring the following: cotton balls, ice candy plastic,
two pieces of straw and rubber bands.
