In the spirit of creativity and continuing the jazz legacy, Essentially Ellington encouraged
young musicians to compose and arrange by offering the Sixth Annual Essentially
Ellington Dr. J. Douglas White Student Composition/Arranging Contest. Each submission
was critiqued by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) saxophonist, composer,
arranger, and educator Ted Nash, and the winning selection was recorded by the JLCO at
its annual Essentially Ellington recording session on May 9, 2018. In addition, Summer
received a cash prize, a composition lesson with Mr. Nash, and a trip to New York City to
observe and participate in the JLCO recording session and 2018 Essentially Ellington
Competition & Festival.

Summer Camargo is currently a junior in the Dillard Center for


the Arts Jazz Ensemble and plays trumpet in both the lead and
solo chairs. She is also presently principal chair in the Dillard
Center for the Arts Wind Orchestra and the president of First
Priority, a Christian club, at her school. Summer has been a mem-
ber of Florida’s All-State Jazz Ensemble (2014, 2015, 2017, and
2018), the All-National Jazz Band (2017), the Jazz Band of
America (2017 and 2018), and the Grammy Camp Jazz Session’s
