CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Language is ability that human have to communicate with each other. Language becomes
a instrument used by community in variety of communications. Through language, people can
understand what is being said and what is heard . By using Language, people can express idea,
experiences, thought, wants, hopes, feeling and so on to other. When two or more people
communicate with each other to speech we can call the system of communication that they
employ a code, in most casesthat code will be something we may also to call Language
(Wardhaugh, 2006:1).
It is because the needs of human communication are so various and so multifarious that the study
of meaning is probably the most difficult and baffling part of the serious study of language.
Traditionally, language has been defined as the expression of thought, but this involves far too
narrow an interpretation of language or far too wide a view of thought to be serviceable. The
expression of thought is just one among the many functions performed by language in certain
contexts.
Languages in part create the world in which humans live. Of course, many words do
name existing bits and pieces of earth and heaven: stone, tree, dog, woman, star, cloud, and so
on. Others, however, do not so much pick out what is there as classify it and organize one’s
relations with it and with each other with regard to it. A range of living creatures are mammals or
are vertebrates, because people classify them in these ways, among others, by applying selected
criteria and so determining the denotation of the words mammal and vertebrate. Plants are
vegetables or weeds according as groups of people classify them, and different plants are
included and excluded by such classifications in different languages and different cultures.
In this research, writer take the utterance that occurs on Dialogue in the Descipable me 2
movie because there are various language in this movie.
Based on the background , the writer formulated some problem as the following:
Based on the statement of the polem mentioned above, the writer has the purposes of
study. As follows:
a. To find out the forms of Code mixing are used in Stay with me.
b. To explain the factors of code mixing found in Stay with me.
1. Theoretical benefits. The result of this study can be used as additional knowledge to
improve the ability of code mixing. It will influence students to study linguistics, sociolinguistics,
and especially about code mixing. Besides, this code can 10 be additional knowledge that code
mixing also can be found in the novel and another media.
2. Practical benefit. The result of this study can be as a reference for students, and other
researchers who are interested in analyzing and developing study about code mixing. It can be used
as additional reference and information in using better utterances.

can be referred to any kind of system that two or more people employ for

CHAPTER II
2.1.1 Sociolinguistics
A term sociolinguistics is a derivational word. Two words that form it are sociology and
linguistics. Sociology refers to a science of society; and linguistics refers to a science of
language. A study of language from the perspective of society may be thought as linguistics plus
sociology. Some investigators have found it to introduce a distinction between sociolinguistics
and sociology of language. Some others regard sociolinguistics is often referred as the sociology
of language.
1. The study that is concerned with the relationship between language and the
context in which it is used. In other words, it studies the relationship between
language and society. It explains we people speak differently in different social
contexts. It discusses the social functions of language and the ways it is used to
convey social meaning. All of the topics provides a lot of information about the
language works, as well as about the social relationships in a community, and
the way people signal aspects of their social identity through their language
(Jenet Holmes, 2001)
2. The study that is concerned with the interaction of language and setting (Carol
M. Eastman, 1975; 113).
3. the study that is concerned with investigating the relationship between language
and society with the goal of a better understanding of the structure of language
and of how languages function in communication ( Ronald Wardhaugh, 1986 :
12)
In relation to the ways of speaking Dell Hymes states that the point of it is the
regulative idea that the communicative behavior within a community is analyzable in terms of
determinate ways of speaking, that the communicative competence of persons comprises in part
a knowledge of determinate ways of speaking (in Gamperz and Hymes, eds., 1972 : 57).
While Kirszner and Mandell (in Ersan, 2003:17) divide language style into four
levels, and they are:
1. Slang Style
The Oxford Dictionary (1995:1111) defines slang as language of a highly
colloquial type and is not thought suitable for formal situations. In other word, slang is known as
very informal language that includes new and sometimes not polite words and meanings, and is
often used among particular groups of people and is usually not used in serious speech or
writing. It is an expression like “screw up” or “ripped off” which are often used in speech.
2. Colloquial Style
It is similar to slang, when used in writing it gives the impression of speech. It is
not as radical as slang, and it is more relaxed and conversational than formal style. It uses
constructions and shortened forms of words (ad for advertisement, sub for submarine). It is
suitable for ordinary, informal or familiar conversation.
3. Informal Style
It is often used in writing tests, informal essays; reports can also be written this
way. However, research papers are usually more formal. Informal style is halfway between
colloquial and formal styles. Informal style is usually not following official or established rules
and methods.
4. Formal style.
It is used at special occasions that call for dignity and seriousness. It does not
use constructions and it strives for absolute grammatical accuracy. The used of formal style is
based on or done according to correct or accepted rules.
Many revered intellectuals, throughout history and even today, have thought
that the above type of conversation is petty drivel or garbage, and that the great benefit of human
communication is to persuade people to do the right thing, and thus eradicate (or at least greatly
reduce) the “evils” of this world.
RESEARCH METHOD
Wendra (2007:32) says”the subject of research is the thing or person where the
varbiable is attached, abd the issues in the study. The subject of research has a very central
position in the research because on the subject of the study data about the variables studied and
observed by researcher”. In this study, the subjects are the sentences used in the Descipable me 2
movie.
Arikunto (2002:136) states that the instrument is a tool or a esearch facility used
by researcher to collect data in order to work more easily processed (siregar, 2016:5). In this
research instrument is the researcher it self because human is the main instrument to collect dat.
Margono (2004:119) stated that human is instrument that will be to understand and to interact
with the respondent, to analyze and to valve the meaning of various in field research.
