Structural Design of Extradosed Bridge with

Pre Stressed Concrete (PSC) Box Girder Deck

with
Pre-stress Tendon Cables and Stay Cables
in IRC Standard with IRC 6 Class Loadings
by ASTRA Pro

1
Foreword:

The procedure starts with Analysis for DL, SIDL, Live Load (Multi lane vehicle moving load), then stepwise
design considering temperature, creep shrinkage etc. for Flexure, Shear including Blister Blocks, Cable
Structure etc. and finally providing complete set of sample editable CAD drawings with relevant structural &
details of construction sequence.

σa = 0.6fy = 0.6*415Mpa = 24900 t/m^2
z= 1.6 m
As seen from above paper the R/F provided in three parts for following effects.
A1 = bursting/bending
A2 = horizontal shear
A3 = vertical pull out

CALCULATION OF REINFORCEMENT A1

Case 1: A1 = F. d.cosα/(z. σa)

= 30.4 cm^2

Case 2: δ= d'/d
= 152.5/265.1
= 0.58
A1 = F*0.25(1-δ)/σa
= 386.2485*0.25(1-0.58)*10000/24900
= 16.5 cm^2
Case 3 : A1 = F*(0.5-sinα)/σa
= 386.2485*(0.5-sin11.31)*10000/24900
= 47.1 cm^2
Hence area required area A1 = 47.1 cm^2

DESIGN OF END ANCHORAGE (as per clause 17 IRC-18-1985)

A. CHECK FOR PERMISSIBLE STRESS BEHIND ANCHORAGE

Thickness of web near support. = 600 mm
Size of end anchorage block. = 305 mm
Spacing of anchorage block along the web. = 600 mm
Grade of concrete. fck = 40 Mpa
Grade of reinfocrment. fy = 415 Mpa
Strength of concrete at 14 days, fcj = = 40 Mpa

600

x = (600-305)/2 = 147.5 mm
> 76.25 mm
OK

147.5
147.5 305

Permissible bearing stress behind anchorage

fb = 0.48fcj*(A2/A1)0.5 or 0.8fcj whichever is smaller [refer Cl. 7.3 IRC-18-2000]

A1 = 0.305 X 0.305 = 0.0930 m2
A2 = 0.60 X 0.60 = 0.3600 m2
fb = 0.48fcj*(A2/A1)0.5 = 3777.05 t/m2
fb = 0.8fcj = 3200.00 t/m2
Hence permissible bearing stress behind anchorage = 3200.00 t/m2

Maximum force in cable at jacking end after friction, slip & elastic shortening loss = 303 t
Bearing stress developed = 3257.19 t/m2
> 3200.00 t/m2

IT MAY BE NOTED THAT THE STRESS BEHIND ANCHORAGE IS MORE THAN THE
PERMISSIBLE STRESS AS PER IRC:18. HOWEVER AS PER CEB-FIP CODE, THE INCREASE IN
THE BEARING STRESS DUE TO CONFINEMENT MAY BE ACCOUNTED FOR BY PROVIDING
SPIRAL REINFORCEMENT.

Since the anchorages are embedded type, the reinforcement details, concrete strength, cover and other dimensions
have been provided in conformity with the Manufacturer's literature. As per Manufacturer's Literature (Freyssinet's
catalogue), the spiral reinforcement recommended for 19K15 type of cable is as follows :
16 φ spiral with 440 mm inner dia and 65 mm spacing
Total Length of Spiral = 390 mm
With the above detail and confinement, the additional strength of concrete will make the stress behind
anchorage safe.

45
B. DESIGN OF END BLOCK FOR BURSTING REINFORCEMENT

2Yo

2Ypo

2Yo = 600 mm
2Ypo = 305 mm
2Ypo/2Yo = 0.508 < 0.7
= 0.508

Ultimate cable force Pk = 504.9 t

Fbst/Pk ( corresponding to Ypo/Yo ) From table 8 page 35,IRC 18 -2000 = 0.133
Fbst = 67.15 t
Required reinforcement = Fbst / (0.87fy) = 18.6 cm2

Provide 5 nos 2L 16 φ = 20.11 cm2

This reinforcement shall be provided in a zone 0.2 Yo= 0.2*200=42.5mm from face to 2Yo =425mm
Please note that the mesh reinforcement is provided over and above the spiral reinforcement for each
anchorage, which also acts as bursting reinforcement. This is a conservative approach.

f. horizontzl tensile reinf. in web

To take up the tension in web due to future cables near anchorage it is assumed that half the prestressing force in
cables is taken up by reinforcement.
total horizontal force in one web = 678 t
force taken by reinf. = 338.814 t
reinf. required =338.81447368421/(0.87*4.15) = 93.8 cm^2

DESIGN OF CROSS DIAPHRAGMS

The design of diaphragm has been carried out by truss analogy by taking the support reactions due to
various loads from Bearing design. The bearing reactions has been considered for the dead load + sidl
for the jacking up case.

Jack up Condition
The Critical case for the design of end diaphragm will be in the "Jack up Case" while jacking up the
superstructure for replacement of bearings. In the normal case, the bearing are aligned with the centreline
of web therefore the load from superstructure will be transferred to the bearings directly through the webs.
In the normal case, the end diaphragm has been designed only for the direct load placed on the
diaphragm( 40 t boggie)

diaphragm thickness = 0.5 m
