Using Games as a Tool in Teaching Vocabulary to Young Learner

Teaching English is become phenomena in Saudi Arabia especially to young learners.


English taught as a core subject in kindergarten and elementary school there. The problem is
the students always get bored when teacher teach them too fast and still use an old method.
We know that teaching young learner is very difficult because they can get distracted fast. In
this case teacher will focus on teaching vocabulary. As it is known to master English skill,
student must know the vocabulary of the language because vocabulary is basic part and key
element to learn any languages include English. From this problem, teachers try to looking
for new method and another tool in teaching English. Then teacher choose games as another
tool in helping teaching vocabulary to young learner. By using a new method or games it can
make the atmosphere in the class more fun and can make the students enjoy in teaching
process. But not only that by using games in teaching English also can help to decrease their
nervousness and shyness of students. Children will be more pay attention because they enjoy
themselves and the classroom and feel and do better during and after games. There are two
step in implementing games to teach vocabulary to young learner the first grouping the
student and the second giving explanation and instruction about games. Although games is
good as tool for teaching vocabulary to young learner, it can also give challenge to the
teacher while use it, so that the teacher should be more creative when choosing or designing
games to teach vocabulary to young learner.
