A General Requirements

Underground (UG), buried pressure piping in flammable & toxic

service within the SSD fence is limited as follows:
• Road, fence and dike crossings.
• New connections to existing buried lines (Tie-Ins & Hot taps) SAES-L-310
A1
• One hundred percent of the buried line can be inspected by Para. 13.2
instrumented scrapers.
• As required by SAES-O-202.
No buried dead legs are allowed, including "effective" dead legs
resulting from the buried portion of the line being frequently or
normally valved off unless the line is designed to be self-
SAES-L-310,
A2 draining
Para. 13.3.1
and/or is internally coated per SAES-H-002.

Corrosion allowance (CA) is shown on SIS sheet, specs and

SAES-L-310
A3 Isometric Drawings (calcs per SAES-L-133 are complete).
Para. 10.6

The buried piping (including appurtenances) shall be

cathodically protected with impressed-current or galvanic SAES-L-310
anodes system to meet the requirements of SAES-X-400 or
A4
SAES-X-600. Also, the buried piping (including appurtenances) Para. 13.3.2,
shall be externally coated with an approved coating, in 13.3.4
accordance with SAES-H-002.

Coating protection per SAES-H-002, Section 5 is as follows:

a) All buried onshore pipes shall be externally coated.
b) Pipes in all subsea services shall be externally coated.
c) All onshore buried and subsea coated pipes shall be 100%
holiday free and all holidays shall be repaired prior to burial.
SAES-H-002
A5 d) For sharp angles (46 to 90 degrees), the laminate coating
Section 5
shall extend at least 1 m above ground.
e) For shallow angles (45 degrees or less), the laminate coating
shall extend at least 8 m above ground or to the near pipe
support.

Separations between potable water lines and oily water sewer
lines with minimum clearances per SAES-S-020:
A) Oily water drainage line and
potable water line clearances as follows:
• Oily water drainage line is spaced 3 meters from potable water
lines
• Oily water drainage line crossings are located 300mm below
potable water lines.
B) (Due to existing conditions) to crossing clearances:
• Ensure oily water drainage line piping crossing potable water SAES-S-020
A8
line is one joint of pipe (both ends of oily water drainage line Section 4.2
pipe are 3 meters beyond crossing point).
• Ensure that the oily water drainage line is lined steel pipe
joined together by full penetration butt-welds.
• Ensure that the oily water drainage line piping is encased in a
150mm (minimum) concrete sheath for 3 meters in both
directions beyond crossing.
• Ensure that the oily water drainage line is encased in a sealed
casing of either coated steel sleeve or RTR pressure pipe for 3
m in both directions beyond the crossing point.

B Trenching & Backfilling

Prior to backfilling and during lowering, the piping is supported

inside the trench with a maximum allowable unsupported length SAES-L-450
B1
of three meters. Voids below the pipe are carefully backfilled. Para, 14.5

The pipe shall be embedded in clean sand not less than 200
mm above the top of pipe in a manner which shall not damage
SAES-L-450
B2 the coating. The sand shall not contain stones larger than 12
Para, 14.8.3
mm size.

The remainder of the backfill is placed in a manner that does

not disturb the layer of clean sand around the pipe (sand pad). SAES-L-450
B3
Select and approved Backfill does not contain rock larger than Para, 14.8.4
50 mm size.
The transition zones of the metallic piping from above ground to
underground shall not be encompassed by concrete or asphalt.
SAES-L-350
B4 A minimum of 1foot annuals of sweet sand capped with
Para. 16.4.1
aggregate shall surround the transition section.

At the transition point, the approved UG external coating is

extended at least 1 meter above ground where sand SAES-L-350
B6
accumulates. Para. 16.4.2

Minimum backfill cover over UG pressure piping are:

a. 450 mm in unpaved or paved areas
SAES-L-310
B7 b. 750 mm under paved roads, except under a reinforced
Para 13.3.3
concrete slab or other protection subject to approval by the
Chairman of Piping Standards Committee.

SAES-L-460

Casing preparations and installations (if and as applicable) shall

B8
comply with section 11 of SAES-L-460.
Sections
11.1~11.13

As a minimum and prior to installation and/or erection of pipe

spools on the pipe racks and pipe supports the following shall
be conducted:
• Pipes are internally cleaned
SAES-L-350
B9 by air blowing and for large diameters pipes rag cleaning should
Section 15.2
be conducted if found practical.
• Prefabricated spools have all foreign material removed from
ID.
• Piping ends are covered after inspection.

All materials shall be handled with care during fabrication and

installation to prevent damage.
Lined and coated pipes and fittings shall be lifted with wide SAES-L-350
B11
fabric or rubber-covered slings and padding shall be used to Section 8
prevent damage to lining or coating in accordance with SAES-
H-200.

Insulating Gaskets/Kits are used for dissimilar metals

connections; examples: a stainless steel flange to carbon steel SAES-L-105
B12 flange, or a Cu-Ni flange to carbon steel flange, the potential for Para
galvanic corrosion shall be determined in consultation with the 5.7.1
Materials Engineering Unit of Consulting Services Department.

For UG pressure piping flanged connections, coated bolting
materials are required to be installed as follows:
• ASTM
A193-B7/ASTM A194-2H with ceramic-fluoropolymer coating
(per 09-SAMSS-107). Note: ASTM A320 Grade L7M bolts and
Grade 7M nuts can also be used (SAES-L-109, Para. 5.2). SAES-L-105
B13
Para. 5.6.2
• Corrosion-resistant alloy bolting
• Painting exposed portions of the bolts and sealing the gap
between flange faces
• Encapsulating the flange connection with heat shrinkable
tubing.
