CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Brainbox Tutorial and Review Center, popularly known as Brainbox, is a start-up that

offers tutorial and review services. Brainbox caters to both children and adults and, for each

market, Brainbox has a program to offer. It provides one-on-one tutorials, Civil Service Exam

Review, University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT) Review, and

Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Entrance Exam Review. At the present, Brainbox

employs an average of thirty tutors which mostly comprise of college students from the

University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban Campus.

For one-on-one tutorials, students can choose either to have their class in the center or

have it in their respective homes (also called home-based tutorial). In a home-based tutorial, a

tutor is sent to the abode of the student to conduct the tutorial. This was devised so that students

who do not have the time to go to Brainbox can avail the services at the convenience of their

own homes. It costs P 125.00 for children ages 0 – 18 and P 150.00 for adults in availing the

services of Brainbox.

Moreover, the Civil Service Exam Review is offered to individuals who wish to pass

the Civil Service Examination (CSE) and earn an eligibility that would qualify them to work

in government service. The program costs four-thousand pesos (P4, 000.00) only and an

additional five-hundred pesos (P500.00) for the reviewer. The program has an eight-day

session from eight o’clock in the morning to five o’clock in the afternoon. The student can

choose his/her class schedule either on Saturday or Sunday. Additional practice tests are

provided to the students all throughout the session. If a student does not pass the exam and

desires to review again, he/she may re-enrol without any fee. This is allowable for one year

only. In 2017, from the month of January to March, a total of one-hundred and eight (108)

students enrolled. From April to August of the same year one-hundred twenty-five (125)
students enrolled. This shows a fifteen (15%) percent increase from the previous figures. From

November of 2017 up to March of 2018, a total of 215 students enrolled in the said program.

This depicts a seventy-two (72%) percent increase in the number of enrolees. Recently, from

April to August of 2018, a total of 175 students enrolled showing an eighteen (18%) percent

decrease.

The University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT) Review is

intended to those who want to ace the entrance exam to the University of the Philippines. It has

fifteen half-day sessions. The fee to this program amounts to two thousand five-hundred pesos

(P2, 500.00) only. Hand outs and practice tests are provided to the students. A module has also

been produced, serving as the syllabi of the classes held. In 2017, from the month of April to

October a total of one-hundred thirty (130) students enrolled, while in 2018, from April to

September two-hundred forty (240) students enrolled. This shows an eighty (80%) percent

increase in the number of enrolees.

The Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Entrance Exam Review is offered to

elementary pupils, as early as Grade-5, to aid them in preparing for the entrance exam to the

Philippine Science High School. This has eighteen half-day sessions. The fee to this program

is three-thousand five-hundred pesos (P3, 500.00) only. A module covering all three major

subjects (Mathematics, English and Science) in the examination is made available. In 2017,

from April to October, fifty (50) students enrolled in the program. In 2018, from April to

October, only forty (40) students enrolled. This shows a twenty percent (20%) decrease from

the previous number of enrolees. In comparison to the other programs, the PSHS Review

remains to have a relatively low number of enrolees.
