‘Greta’ Movie Review

Greta is a 2018 American psychological thriller movie directed and written by the

Irish writer-director, Neil Jordan. This movie is not only Neil Jordan's latest feature which he co-

wrote with Ray Wright, but also an eagerly anticipated comeback of Neil Jordan as a film

director after his 6-year hiatus from the film industry. In this psychological thriller movie, Neil

Jordan visualizes a nerve-rattling and mysterious story of the friendship between a young woman

and a lonely widow in New York City.

This movie carries out a sequence of circumstances. It kicks off with a young

restaurant hostess named Frances McCullen who is on the subway one day and notices a lost

pocketbook. Trying to be a good person, she returns the pocketbook to its rightful owner. That

owner is Greta, an older Frenchwoman who loves piano music and has an endearing need for

companionship. Soon after Frances becomes friends with Greta, the problem arises when

Frances finds many identical pocketbooks to the one she found on the subway in Greta’s home.

Frances also discovers that Greta has disturbing motives behind their friendship. Feeling

disturbed by what Greta does, Frances subsequently cut ties with her. Then, things are getting
worse when Greta begins to stalk Frances and eventually kidnaps her, but Frances is not going

down without a fight in order to escape from Greta’s house.

In terms of the narrative viewpoint, the story itself compels too much suspension of

disbelief as to the nonsense things that the characters say and do. It can be seen from the scene

where Greta continuously stalks Frances and her friend. The scene seems ridiculously clunky

and a little bit inconsequential. Additionally, the general ineffectiveness of several characters in

the film is certainly unavoidable. Neil Jordan apparently does not cast aside several characters

who do not contribute crucially to the story of this film, for example, the police and authority

figures.

In spite of its shortcomings, Greta (2018) deserves praise for the terrific

cinematography, incredible production designing, and fabulous casting. The amazing expertise

of the cinematographer in making motion pictures results in quite delightful camera angles and

shots. Likewise, the production design visually tells the story. It can be seen from the setting of

a hidden room in Greta’s home which becomes a psychological battleground for Frances and

Greta, and it can also be seen from the visual look inside Greta’s home which displays the

mysterious yet detailed touches, like a cookie-cutter, a wrong-placed finger, and a syringe.

Besides, Isabelle Huppert as Greta Hideg, Chloe Grace Moretz as Frances McCullen, and Maika

Monroe as Erica Penn showcase their all-out acting performances in this film.

As a whole, Greta (2018) is a worth-watching movie for the fans of psychological

thriller with the touch of provocative adult fantasy. Despite the weaknesses and strengths of the

Neil Jordan's latest work, the message that the audience can get from Greta (2018) is that there

are monsters among us, but not all of them are human.
