This troubleshooting guide covers the Grade Gripper feature. This feature is mainly a simple
control function of the Bendix ABS, but also relies on multiple control units for input and
output signals. This creates a complex mix of data linked messages and sensor inputs, which
ultimately result in the activation of the solenoid valve. This in turn controls the service brake
valves for both tractor and trailer during Grade Gripper mode.

Anti-Lock Brake System Troubleshooting

Grade Gripper Troubleshooting
General System Overview

The Grade Gripper feature is mainly a simple output control

of the Bendix ABS system, relying on input signals from mul-
tiple control units. This information exchange between con-
trol units creates a complex mix of data linked messaging
going from one control unit to another, resulting in the activa-
tion of a single Grade Gripper solenoid. The activation of this
solenoid valve, temporarily, commands the pneumatic brake
system for the tractor and trailer for the Grade Gripper
feature.

This document will detail only the specific components and

interrelated messaging control signals for Grade Gripper
and will consist of the following:
• Data linked fault messaging
• Input-Output signals
• Related vehicle wiring
• Basic pneumatic valve troubleshooting along with some re-
lated clutch and foundation brake problems.
While a document of this type will guide you through most
troubleshooting situations encountered, the technician will
have to rely on his or her own knowledge and skill to process
the information correctly and use good judgment while trou-
bleshooting any system having similar complexities.

General Troubleshooting

Good troubleshooting techniques generally start with careful

examination of the failure type and which repair areas to be-
gin with. One often overlooked insight begins with a good
driver interview of the reason he or she is having the prob-
lem to start with. For instance, if there are no active fault co-
des, there must be a reported symptom. It may be that some
initial instruction on how the system works is all that is re-
quired to solve or correct a problem in most instances. This
should be where you first start the troubleshooting repair
process.

However, when a combination of symptoms and or fault co-

des appear, one must filter and prioritize any related areas
of concerns surrounding the actual symptoms or faults.
While ABS faults alone may not point to the problem right
away, they along with thorough checks of the pneumatic
brake control system down to the basic mechanical founda-
tion brakes all serve as potential candidates for inspection
and or repairs.

A heavily weighted consideration must be given to using the

Bendix® service tool (ACOM) and also the Bendix.com web-
site for Grade Gripper solenoid valve problems. Tech Tool
must be used for all other fault codes and DTC’s.
