1 SCOPE
This method statement describes the step by step procedure for application of Sikagard® 720 EpoCem HC
as pore sealer slurry.

2 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Sikagard® 720 EpoCem HC is a normal setting, three-component, epoxy modified, cementitious sealing
and protective mortar.

USES
 As sealing mortar (0.5 – 2.0 mm) on concrete, mortar, stone.
 For repairs to fair faced concrete in chemically aggressive environment.
 As pore sealer on horizontal and vertical surfaces.
 As temporary moisture barrier (1.0 mm)

ADVANTAGES
 An ideal surface preparation for the subsequent application of Sika epoxy products.
 Minimum delays to follow-up applications of Sika epoxy products.
 Fast and easy to apply.
 Waterproof.
 Permeable to water vapour (allows substrate to “breathe”).
 Excellent adhesion to dry or damp concrete.
 Suitable for interior and exterior use.
 Solvent-free.

COVERAGE
 Approx. 2.0 kg/m2 for 1 mm layer thickness.
 Layer thickness: min. 0.5 mm, max. 3 mm,
 Material consumption depending on substrate conditions.

3 APPLICATION

3.1 TOOLS
Trowel/spatula/brush, electric mixer, vacuum cleaner, grinding machine, high pressure water jetting.

3.2 SURFACE PREPARATION

 The concrete surface should be clean, sound, free from dust, cement laitance, loose particles, oil,
grease or any other contamination.
 All surfaces should be as true and flat as possible.
 The surface should not be smooth, but slightly rough in order to allow a mechanical key and to
achieve maximum adhesion of the coating to the substrate. Surface preparation should be carried
out with high pressure water jetting or grit blasting.
 Saturate concrete substrate thoroughly with clean water prior to the application. The surface should
be damp, not absorbent, no standing water and no residual surface water from pre-wetting.
 At elevated temperatures and on porous or absorbent surfaces, it is recommended to apply a
mixture of components A + B first, consumption approximately 0.1 kg/m 2

3.3 MIXING
EpoCem
 Add component A of Sikagard® 720 EpoCem HC to 2 coats
component B, shake well for approximately 30 seconds.
 Then pour binder (comp. A+B) into a clean mixing vessel.
 Add component C slowly and mix thoroughly with a
suitable low-speed electric mixer (max. 500 rpm) for at
least 3 minutes and until a homogeneous mixture is
achieved.

Concrete
3.4 APPLICATION
 Apply Sikagard® 720 EpoCem HC by brush, spatula, or trowel.
 Do not apply more than 2 mm per application, where the thickness exceeds 2 mm; apply in two or
more layers. Assure good compaction.
 For control purposes it is advisable to apply the Sikagard® 720 EpoCem HC in two coats.
 In order to control a minimum thickness, it is recommended to apply a first coat (2 kg/m2) by
notched trowel, the second coat is applied by flat trowel or brush into the notches of the stiffened
first coat.
 If otherwise the application is done fully by brush, additional (1 – 2 ) coats will be requiered to achive
the correct consumption.
 Depending on waiting time, a slight pre-wetting of the first coat might be necessary. At elevated
temperatures apply a mixture of component A + B first. In case of longer waiting times, contact our
Technical Service Department.
 It is not permitted to use additional water, which would disturb the surface finish and cause
discoloration.
 Freshly applied Sikagard® 720 EpoCem HC must be protected from rain for 24 hours.
 Pot Life (30°C) : 30 minutes

3.5 CONSUMPTION
2.0 kg/m² per 1 mm thickness.

3.6 REPAIR & MAINTAINANCE

 Based on the visual check, mark all areas where repair shall be done. Make 10 cm square from the
damage point.
 Only regular shapes (rectangle, square, or circle) shall be broken out. Minimize the number of edges
by combining close patches in one breakout.
 Saw cut using a grinder 3 - 5 mm deep around the perimeter of the marked repair area; in order to
avoid the over break or the possibility of weak edges.
 Remove the defected Sikagard 720 EpoCem layer inside the square using a suitable machincal mean
(jackhamer, grinder, etc.), until find the concrete surface.
 All exposed concrete shall be cleaned and prepared to achieve a laitance and contaminant free,
open textured concrete surface, by using vacuum cleaner or waterjet.
 Apply Sikagard® 720 EpoCem HC by brush, spatula, or trowel inside the square, until the thickness
same with exisisting layer around the square.
 Apply finishing layer (0.5 mm) using brush where it must to cover the square and overlap to the
existing at least 10 cm from the edge of the square.

3.7 FINISHING
 Do not use water for surface finishing

3.8 CURING
 Protect Sikagard® 720 EpoCem HC from rain and direct sunlight (e.g. hessian, plastic sheeting) for
minimum 24 hours.
 Do not use water for curing

3.9 CLEANING
Clean all tools and equipment with water. Cured material can only be removed mechanically.

3.10 HEALTH AND SAFETY

 Sikagard® 720 EpoCem HC can produce skin rashes (dermatose). Wear protective clothing (gloves,
goggles) and use barrier cream on hands. If eyes comes into contact with material, immediately rinse
thoroughly with warm, clean water and consult physician.
 Single components can contaminate water and must therefore be properly disposed of. Do not pour
into sewer, water or soil.

4 IMPORTANT NOTE
 Normally a moisture content of 4% is achieved after 24 hours at 30C, and can be over-coated with
an epoxy coating (check moisture content before application of epoxy coating!)

  At elevated temperatures it is recommended to pre-condition the material by storing in an air
conditioned environment and out of contact with sunlight.
 At elevated temperatures reduce the amount of Component C.
