CHAPTER – DIRECTING
1. Three friends Rajat, Raman and Ansh completed their MBA from a reputed business school in
Mumbai. They were discussing about the type of organization they would like to join. Rajat was
very clear that he would like to take up a government job as it gives stability about the future
income and work which will help him to work with greater zeal. It will also provide him pension
when he retires from his service.
Raman wanted to work in a company, which has appropriate skill development plans for its
employees and helps the employees to grow to higher levels in the organization. In addition to
this, the company should also provide facilities like housing, medical aid etc. Ansh said that he
would prefer to work in an organization, which has the culture of individual autonomy, is
considerate to employees and provides the employees with opportunity for personal growth and
a meaningful work experience.
a. Identify the various financial and non-financial incentives discussed by the three friends in the
above conversation.
b. Explain three other non-financial incentives which were not discussed by any one of them.
2. Sandhia is a successful manager at Mansions Enterprises. She has a team of twelve people working
under her. She encourages them to set their own objectives and take decisions. She respects their
opinions and supports them, so that they can perform their duties and accomplish organizational
objectives. To manage and exercise effective control she uses forces within the group.
As an intelligent manager, at times, she also makes use of positive aspects of informal
communication. This way, she is able to unify diverse interests and ensure that targets are met.
a. There are many theories and styles of influencing people’s behavior. Identify the style used
by Sandhia which is based on the use of authority.
b. State two positive aspects of the communication discussed above, which Sandhia is using as
an intelligent manager.
3. Huma is working in a company on a permanent basis. As per the job agreement she had to work
for 8 hours a day and was free to work overtime. Huma worked overtime, due to which she fell
ill and had to take leave from her work. No one showed concern and enquired about her health.
She realized that she was fulfilling only some of her needs while some other needs still remained
to be fulfilled.
a. By quoting the lines from the above para, identify the needs of Huma which she is able to
fulfill.
b. Also explain two other needs of Huma followed by the above needs, which still remained to
be satisfied.
4. Amar, the marketing manager of Narmada Garments Ltd. allows the salesmen working under him
to freely express their frank opinion and feelings regarding work related matters before him.
Identify the organizational barrier to communication that has been overcome because of Amar’s
behavior.
5. Neeraj, a sales representative of Omida Ltd. has changed seven jobs in the last one year. He is a
hard working person but is not able to finalise deals with the customers due to inadequate
vocabulary and omission of needed words. Sometimes he uses wrong words because of which
intended meaning is not conveyed. All this created a misunderstanding between him and his
clients.
a. Identify the communication barrier discussed above.
b. State the category of this communication barrier.
c. Explain any other communication barrier of the same category.
6. Ayasha Ltd. assured their employees that despite of recession, no worker will be retrenched from
the job.
a. Name and explain the type of incentive offered to the employees.
b. Explain one more incentive of the same category.
7. Mohan is the chief chef of ‘Khidmat’ restaurant located in the city of Bengaluru. The place is
known for its exquisite Mughlai cuisine especially mutton biriyani and kababs. All the food is
prepared under Mohan’s purview. The various activities in the kitchen are initiated in accordance
to his instructions. He is very clear and specific in issuing instructions to his subordinates in order
to ensure smooth working of the department. He personally oversees the method followed by
the chefs for preparation of each dish. He misses no opportunity to praise his subordinates for
their good work. All his team members feel very happy and satisfied under his direction. He
provides constant guidance to them in order to improve upon its taste and presentation and also
encourages them to innovate and be more creative in their work.
By quoting lines, identify the various elements of directing mentioned in the given paragraph.
8. Mark Nar, a Latin American, while closing a business deal with a businessman from Spain, used a
word which was considered offensive in Spanish when translated. This made the Spanish
businessman upset and he backed away.
State the semantic barrier to effective communication referred to in the above para.
9. To satisfy the social and psychological needs, which type of incentives are needed? Explain any
four types of such incentives.
10. At present, apart from the basic pay and allowances as a part of compensation, the employees
and employers contribute 12% of basic wages each towards Employee Provident Fund Scheme
and Employee Pension Fund Scheme. A proposal to reduce the contribution by employers and
employees to 10% of basic pay and dearness allowance was listed on the agenda for a recent
meeting of Employees Provident Fund Organization. The stakeholders expressed their
reservations about it and they feel that it should be continued to 12%.
Explain any two needs as suggested by Maslow Need Hierarchy Theory, which will not satisfied by
the incentives discussed above.
