Paul Chandler’s Monthly Newsletter

From Castanhal, Brazil

July, 2008
Hello All, July has been a very emotional hard month for me here. On July 10, I found
out that my brother Phil Chandler passed away the night before. I was not able to
return home for the funeral but I had great support here in Brazil, as well as over 100
e-mails from family and friends sending their support. Photo on the right is Rosely,
Rachel and Micah not in the picture is Ken. These four were on the trip with me
within hours after finding out about Phil. They “took care of me” in many different
ways throughout this time. Thank you.

The first weekend in July I went to CamPaz at Maruda. It was a weekend Camp for
teens from Castanhal and Belem. There was over 200 teens worshiping and praying
over two days. It was an awesome experience being directly surrounded with
Brazilians. (There were only about 5 people that spoke English.) It was a spiritual
retreat for me as well. I prayed and worshiped in my own way and really felt God
talking to me, confirming my mission here in Castanhal.

The day I received the news about Phil, we left for the Moju to do two clinics. The first
one was scheduled at 10:00AM, but it was delayed about 5 hours due to Ken’s kombi
breaking down. The cause of trouble this time was a bad alternator. But we got it
fixed and got to Terra Firma around 3PM and did two hours of clinics. We had a really
interesting case with a young boy who had a bad wound on his ankle. We all worked
as a team to help this boy out. Photo: Micah distressed over the kombi.

Thursday July 10, we stayed in the guest house at Mamao. It was a nice little
house between the Church and the Pastors House (see photo). The next
morning I woke up real early at about 3AM tossed and turned until 6AM when I
got up and went outside and it was very peaceful and I watch the sunrise and
then the morning fog set in on the Moju River. I took some photos from the
dock (http://picasaweb.google.com/JungleMedicPictures/Brazil2008Week5).

On Friday we did a clinic at Mamao and then headed home. It was a hard
weekend for me. Due to the cost of an airline ticket I was unable to return to
Ohio for Phil’s funeral. Ken gave me the next week off to cope and I remember Phil and his life.

The rest of July has been busy getting ready for first aid teaching in the Moju and at Maruda. Also I have been
getting to know and hanging out with my new friends both Americans and Brazilians.

Here are some verses that God has spoken to me this month. John 20:21, James 5:13-
16, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, and 1 Corinthians 15:58. (Photo: Morning on the Moju.)

Even though this month has had its difficulties, God has continued to shine His light on
me and His work here in Brazil. I praise Him every day for letting me work in His
Kingdom.

A new saying of mine “Talk to strangers.” I do not know what that means yet, but just do it.

May God be a blessing in your life and may your life bless Him,
Paul Chandler
