The 2019 year has started well in the Melbourne Private Practice sector. We have seen a

continuation of last year’s high demand across Commercial Litigation, Property and

front-end Construction work, as well as strong sector growth in Employment &

Workplace Relations, IT / TMT, Insurance (particularly in professional indemnity post-

Financial Services RC), and Competition & Regulatory Law.

This strong start to the year has generally seen a positive trickle-down effect to

employees this 2019/2020 review period with increases sitting between 7-15%. As with

any year, there are winners and losers at review time. This, along with new-FY

recruitment plans being rolled out across the majority of firms leads to significant

movement in the job market and opens up substantial opportunity for advancement in

role, responsibility and salary.
