CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH LANDSCAPE DESIGN

EYES UPON THE STREETS

AIM:

The aim of this dissertation is to study the methods to prevent crime in urban area
through landscape design.

conducted to assess the perceived safety of the public during recreational activities
in selected urban parks. The objective of this study is to define the Crime Prevention
through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles and their safety elements that are
significant in designing an urban park. The case studies include three different urban
parks in the vicinity of Shah Alam City, which are Shah Alam Lake Park in Section 14,
Recreational Park in Section 28 and SUK Urban Forest Park in Section 14. Several
criteria of CPTED that could contribute to the better park design have been
identified.

OBJECTIVE:

UNIVERSAL LANDSCAPE

BARRIER FREE DESIGN

The purpose of this paper is to investigate and identify the characteristics in creating green spaces for the dis abled
persons' to enjoy. This resea rch is dedicated specia lly for those with sensory disabili ties, i.e. visually im paired'
persons.

SOUNDSCAPE APPROACH TO NOISE

fully recognised the possibilities of considering sound issues in

design projects. This is problematic, considering that sound influences health and
wellbeing and is an important factor in environmental experience.

Landscape architects have a visual approach to design and consequently, sonic environments are seldom acknowledged. This study
aims to bring more awareness to the importance of the acoustic environment in landscape architectural practices. Steps for
approaching soundscape design were devised through a literature review and a soundscape design for Day Park Beach, Cape Breton,
Nova Scotia. The literature review provided context for the design by examining research related to sound. Data were collected
through soundwalks, two focus groups, and on-site observations. Using a sound recorder, the researcher collected perceptions of
three people residing in Cape Breton and six visitors regarding existing soundscapes during one day at Day Park Beach. Results
show the importance of soundscape evaluation and the value of understanding the viewpoints of both residents and visitors during
the design process. This thesis offers useful information for landscape architects interested in developing soundscape designs.
