A cricket sang and set the sun marimba solo Blake Tyson Program note: ‘This work takes its ttle from an Emily Dickinson poem that begins, "The cricket sang, And set the sun." | was moved by the image of the setting sun coupled with the idea that something so small could affect something so large, that a cricket's song could transform day into night. Although the piece is not directly based on the poem, I do hope that it captures the sense of fascination, inspiration and beauty that these opening lines create Performance notes The piece should be performed lyrically. Look forthe long lines within the sixteenth-note passages. ‘Tempo indications are approximate, Sticking suggestions are provided. Note the slight diference inthe pattern atthe end of m. 117 Bio Blake Tyson is an Associate Professor and director of percussion studies at the University of Central Arkansas. He has a multifaceted career and is known as @ teacher, performer, and composer. He has performed at the Pereussive Arts Society International Convention, the Northwest Percussion Festival, the Leigh Howard Stevens Summer Marimba Seminar, and at numerous Days of Percussion throughout the United States. His international performances have taken him to Europe, Africa, South ‘America and Asia, His teachers include John Beck, Michael Burritt, Halim El-Dabh, Larry Mathis, and Peggy Benkeser. He received the DMA and the Performer's Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, an MM from Kent State University, and a BM degree from the University of Alabama. Blake Tyson has his own series of marimba mallets with Pro-Mark, and is a clinician and concert artist for Dynasty Percussion and the Avedis Zildjian Company.
