Topic: Valentine’s Day Cards made in Paint

Learning Objective: Students will increase their knowledge of the tools used in Paint while
improving their mouse and keyboarding skills as well.

Starter: Class Discussion:

What is Valentine’s Day? What do people give each other on Valentine’s
Day? Would you like to make a card to give to your Mother or Father to
remind them that you love them?

Content delivery: Teacher instructs the class step-by-step on how to create elements for the
card. While holding up the card (or attaching to a board surface) the
Teacher can explain what each tool is used for.
Steps:
1: Draw a Line straight down the middle of the page to represent the two
halves of a card. Use your line tool.
Teacher holds up the image of the line tool for the class to see.

2: Draw a heart on the left side of the line using your heart tool. Teacher
holds up heart tool. For Teachers using early versions of Paint (Before
Versions 6.0) the students will need to use the Pencil tool to make a free
hand drawing of the heart so hold up the pencil tool instead.

3. Click on the text tool and draw a text box on the right side of the card.
In your text box type: Happy Valentine’s Day to (Mom/Dad) from (name).
Teacher holds up the image of the text tool.

4. Now you may colour the heart red. Select the colour red from the
colourbox and then the fill tool. Click in the middle of the heart. Teacher
holds up an image of the Fill tool.

5. Students may now add any additional decorations to their cards.

6. Students can now be instructed to save or not save.

Reflection: Match each tool to what it is used for.

Plenary: Pair Activity: Students should be in pairs with one partner named A and one
partner named B.
Teacher tells partners A to tell partners B what the line tool is used for.
Teacher tells partners B to tell partner A what the heart tool is used for.
Teacher tells partners A to tell partners B what Valentine’s Day is about.
Teacher tells partners B to tell partners A one new thing that they learned
today.
