Guidance (Gordon, 2000)
Guidance is a process which an individual is assisted to
understand, accept and use his/her abilities, aptitudes
and interests and attitudinal patterns in relation to
his/her aspirations.
Guidance as an educational construct
involves those experinces that assist each
learner to understand him/herself, accept
him/herself, and live effectively in his/her
society.
Guidance is a programme or services to individuals
based upon the need of each individual.
E.g: an understanding of his/her immediate
environment, the influences of environmental
factors on the individual, etc.

Guidance is designed to help each individual

adjust to his/her environment, develop the
ability to set realistic goals for him/herself,
and improve his/her education.
As a process, guidance is not a simple matter, but
involves a series of actions or progressive steps which
move towards a goal.

As a service, we can divide into three major services:

1. Educational Guidance
2. Vocational Guidance
3. Personal & Social Guidance
Educational Guidance
It is concerned with the provision of assistance to pupils
in their choices in, and adjustment to, the curriculum
and school life in general.
- The process aims at making students or individuals aware of
the rightness or wrongness of their choices and importance of
their decision, on which their future depends.
- It is a service that assists students in selecting the most
appropriate course for them, to discover and develop their
psychological and educational abilities and ambitions.
- Guidance results in self-development and helps a person to
plan his present and future wisely.
Vocational Guidance
It is a process for helping individuals to choose an
occupation, prepare for it, enter it and develop on it.
- Vocational happiness requires that a person’s interests,
aptitudes and personality, be suitable for his/her work.
- It plays its part by providing individuals with an
understanding of the world of work and essential human
needs, and familiarizing individuals with such terms as
‘the dignity of labour’ and ‘work value’.
Personal & Social Guidance
It is the process of helping an individual to know how to
behave with consideration towards other people.
Primarily, personal & social guidance helps the individual to
- understand himself,
- know how to get on with others,
- learn manners and etiquette,
- pursue leisure time activities,
- practise social skills,
- develop family and family relationships, and
- understand social roles and responsibilities.
Counselling
Counselling is the service offered to the individual who is
under going a problem and needs professional help to
overcome it.

According to Carl Rogers, counselling is a series of

direct contact with the individual which aims to
offer him assistance in changing the attitudes and
behaviour.
According to Willey and Andrew, COUNSELLING involves two
individuals, one seeking help and other a professionally trained
person, helped solved problems to orient and direct him to words
a goals.

The term counseling is defined as a talking

therapy, in which a person (client) discusses
freely his/her problems and share feelings,
with the counselor, who advises or helps the
client in dealing with the problems.

Types of Counselling
a. Individual counselling
- This is referred to as one-to-one
counselling.
- It occurs between professionally
trained counsellor and his client.
- The goal of this is to help the client
to understand himself, clarify and
direct his thought, in order to make
a worthwhile decision.
b. Group counselling

- This takes place between the

professionally trained counsellor
and a group of people.
- All counselees express their feelings
and the counsellor during group
counselling is to help remove the
marks covering the problem.

The Significances of Guidance & Counselling in Education
- In many schools, it is to provide assistance to individual
students in deciding upon their future careers & education.
- G & C helps learners to improve their academic performance.
- Guidance and counseling helps young people to pursue the
right type of education. Whenever any learner is confused
between two career options, vocational guidance can help to
make a choice. In this way, the individual is motivated.
- Sometimes learners get confused while managing
their time properly. Guidance helps learner to
organise their leisure hours.
- It assists individuals to make informed decisions about their
education. (subjects, curricula, schools or colleges to determine
what exactly they want to pursue) .
- It facilitates the smooth transition for children
from home to school, from primary to secondary
school, from secondary to higher educational
institutions and to the world of work. The final
transition from the educational system to the
labor force appears to be most important and
challenging for students.
- It helps students to cope with examination anxiety. The fear of
failure and a craving for high grades are major stress factors
among students nowadays. Handling this pressure becomes
difficult for children. Guidance helps learners to overcome this
fear and achieve good marks.

- It helps students to develop effective study habits.

They are guided to improve their competence in
reading, note-taking and academic achievement.
