Discussion
Afton Coleman, CFSP
Functional Definition of SIS
 “Safety Instrumented System”: A
system composed of sensors, logic
solvers and final element designed to:
– Automatically take the process to a safe
state when specified dangerous
conditions exist
– Permit a process to move forward in a
safe manner when specified conditions
allow (permissive functions); or
– Take action to mitigate consequences
of an industrial hazard

The Power of Partial Stroke Testing
 Increase SIL Level
– Implementation of Partial Stroking on Final Control Element can increase or
achieve desired SIL level
 Validation of SIS
– Partial Stroking Validates the proper operation of the FCE
– Final Control Elements are commonly untested and are inherently unreliable
 Maintains SIL Level
– Safely extend turnaround times

– DVC6200 SIS performs the
safety function of taking the
actuator to its spring fail state
– DVC6200 SIS can 4-20 mA
0-24 VDC
– Replace a Solenoid (0-24
Vdc, multidrop) Line Conditioner

or
– Stand alone powered by
analog signal (4-20 mA
point to point)
– Type A Device
– Trigger data captures
safety events and return
stroke
– Saves I/O Card in Control
Room, reduces wiring cost

DVC6200 SIS: Application Flexibility
 With Solenoid(s)
– DVC6200 SIS can be used
– in addition to a solenoid as a
redundant element
– or as a PST only unit
– Normal power to the DVC6200 SIS is
4mA, emergency demand at 20mA
– Allows a partial stroke test at the “low
current” state
– In the case of loss of power, DVC6200
SIS does not initiate a safety demand 0-24VDC
DETT 4-20 mA ETT
state
– Trigger data captures safety
events and return stroke
– DVC6200 SIS can record pulse

ETT Option: DVC6200 SIS for PST
Only
Normal power to the DVC6200 SIS is 4mA,
emergency demand sends the DVC to 20mA
Allows a partial stroke test at the “low current”
state
In the case of loss of electrical power, DVC6200
SIS does not initiate a safety demand state

Online Partial Valve Stroke Testing
 Safety Function Priority
• Safety demand will override PST to take the valve to safe state

 Spurious Trip Protection

• PST Pressure Limit prevents actuator from passing pressure threshold that
would slam the valve to its safe state during PST
• Valve Stuck will abort PST and return the valve to original position

 Minimum Process Disturbance

• Customizable valve travel and speed of stroke

Logging Trips: Triggered Profile
 SIS Trigger captures unexpected valve
movement or pressure changes
 Automatically stores travel, pressure and
deviation data in the instrument
Records a valve trip and return stroke
– Assigns a time/date stamp information
– Can be used to take credit as a proof test for spurious
trip or provide further “black box” information for a trip

Utilizing Reliable FIELDVUE SIS technology
 Prevents Dangerous Failures
– Easy PST available to safely extend time before proof tests
– During PST if there is a safety demand, PST will abort and the valve will
be taken to its safe state
– Solenoid valve testing available to record stroke of solenoid while online
without affecting the process
– Suitable for use in up to a SIL 3 SIF loop
 Prevents Spurious Trip
– PST is configurable to minimize process disturbances
– PST pressure limit provides anti slam-shut mechanism
– ETT configuration available to prevent spurious trip upon loss of power
– FIELDVUE SIS and ValveLink help monitor valve health and promotes
preventative maintenance
