E116, and E117 are positioned as the major low-cpm category in the newly conceived IP series that
comply with standard technologies and structures (such as CPCA) for development of future products.
E116 is positioned as a minimal-cost product supporting copy and network print functions. It is
intended to replace chiefly analog copiers.
E117 ranks as a low-end multifunctional printer. As a high value added product having enhanced
network functionality, especially the Send functions including the iFAX function, we aim to grow the
market with E117.
The E116 and E117 use toner bottles. For each of E116, and E117, 16-cpm and 20-cpm models are
prepared to take the best sales strategy fit for individual fields.
Expected product life: Either of 5 years or 300,000 sheets of paper that is earlier
Recommended maximum copy volume: 10,000 sheets of paper per month

4. Service System
This series comes to the lowest on the copier lineup that support IP functionality. Based on the IP
functionality, the models are positioned as low-end multifunctional printers in the digital office concept.
With their enhanced network functions, this series is aimed at extension of the market.
As we informed previously, this series assumes use of laptop computers for maintenance work.
Firmware items for the models are stored in flash ROM DIMM instead of the HDD. This means
replacement of the ROM DIMM can upgrade the products. Therefore, sales companies are advised to
prepare a ROM writer for servicing.
Before introducing this series, prepare laptop computers and the specified ROM writer for servicing
use.
On the models of this series, PDL jobs are processed by the CPU on the PDL board. The firmware
of PDL job process is stored on the PDL board. As a rule, the image processor PCB incorporates
common multifunctional firmware for copy, fax (for E117 only), and PDL functions. The firmware on
the image processor PCB may need upgrading in order to install a PDL option.
The firmware is stored in the flash ROM (F-DIMM) on the fax PCB. Capacity of this F-DIMM is
2 MB.
COPIER -8- GEN-684
These firmware items are upgraded either by downloading from a service computer or by replacing the
F-DIMM. Before replacing the F-DIMM, the new version of firmware must be written to the new
F-DIMM using a ROM writer.
On the image processor PCB and the fax PCB, part of the firmware is written in the CPU internal ROM.
This portion of firmware cannot be upgraded in the field.
Some of the accessories use conventional one-chip microcomputer with built-in flash ROM and
EP-ROM (socket type).

*1: The 2MB DIMM for the image processor is the F-ROM DIMM (3.3 V) used on the iR2200/2800/3300 fax PCB.
The 4MB and 6MB DIMMs are new types of DIMM. To write firmware to the new DIMMs, the ROM writer
manufactured by Ando Electric and a new DIMM adapter are required. For the 2MB DIMM, either the
conventional adapter for the boot ROM or the new adapter will do.
*2: The DC controller is a CPU with built-in F-ROM. However, firmware download by SST will not be supported.
*3: Can be upgraded by adding DIMM to which new firmware is written. This measure may be used at an
emergency, upon examination at Canon Inc.
*4: Network interface for the PDL board is stored in F-ROM directly mounted on the PCB. The network interface
is upgraded by FTP via network. (Download by SST will not be supported.)
*5: For the super G3 fax PCB, the F-ROM DIMM (3.3 V) used on the iR2200/2800/3300 fax PCB is used. To write
the firmware, the ROM writer manufactured by Ando Electric with the conventional boot ROM adapter or the
new DIMM adapter (type A) is required.
(The new adapter will be set up as a service tool.)
*6: Finisher L1 will be updated by downloading.

Models names of E116, and E117 registered to SST are shown below. SST recognizes these models
as different, distinguished models from each other.
E116: iR1600
E117: iR1610
It is impossible to download firmware using SST with a name combination other than the listed two
above. If tried, it results in a connection error.
Connect the copier and the computer using a USB cable available in the market. For the USB port
on the copier, use the port on the image processor PCB provided for NIC internal connection.
Therefore, the rear cover of the copier must be removed for the download. If the copier has a NIC,
remove the NIC cable and connect the PC cable in the place.
The USB port on the printer PCB and the parallel port cannot be used for the download. Download
via the net is not supported.
Unlike the conventional CLC, CP, and GP machines, the products of this series do not permit
download retries. If the first download attempt fails, the DIMM must be replaced. Therefore, be
careful not to turn off the power or remove the connection cable during the download. Preparation
of spare DIMM at hand as well as the ROM writer manufactured by Ando Electric and the adapter
for writing to the DIMM is recommended, just in case.
To download the firmware, use the Service Support Tool (SST) provided to the sales companies by
Canon Inc. SST for the products of this series is still under development, though. To download
firmware for this series, the SST must be upgraded. The applicable SST version will be announced
soon on Service Information.
Firmware for this series does not employ non-Canon software products that have restrictions on the
means of distribution. Therefore, firmware will be provided using conventional FTP servers.
Note: Windows95 and WindowsNT 4.0 are not supported because these OS do not support the USB.
WindowsME is not supported because firmware downloads for other products are impossible with this OS.
The products of this series cannot back up RAM data (parameters in service mode and user mode).
COPIER - 10 - GEN-684
The 4MB and 6MB F-DIMMs require an upgrade (to Rev. 01.71Z) of the ROM writer manufactured
by Ando and a new DIMM adapter (type A adapter, FY9-4097). The new adapter can write to the
2MB F-DIMM too.
When the upgrade for the ROM writer and the new DIMM adapter are ready, it will be informed.
The USB printer class driver for Windows98/98SE is provided by a third party company. In order to
abide by the licensing agreement with this company, we must keep track of the driver. Because of
this, we as a rule prohibit distribution of the driver from web sites. Distribution of the driver via
network such as by downloading from a web site is permitted only if access to the site is limited to
authorized dealers and the site has a system for logging download history. All the USB printer
class drivers distributed must be deleted when the license contract terminates. Therefore, every
time when distributing the driver, log the destination, date of distribution, and the quantity supplied,
so that we can order the driver recipients to delete the driver at termination of the contract. Note
that the contract limits the use of the driver supplied as an attachment to SST to servicing
purposes only. Therefore, we prohibit installation of SST to end user PCs. Distribution control is
not necessary for the setup file set for other OSes.
Should power be turned off during the write, the F-DIMM will be of no use as it is. To reuse the
F-DIMM and restart the copier, write the firmware to the F-DIMM using the ROM writer specified
above, and mount the F-DIMM.
COPIER - 11 - GEN-684
For E116/E117, counter data is backed up at two locations: EEPROM (counter memory) sub PCB
on the image processor board, and the SRAM. Therefore, even if image processor board has to be
replaced, counter data can be carried over by transplanting the EEPROM (counter memory) sub
PCB to the new image processor board.
To encourage proper carry-over of the counter data in the field, service part image processor
boards do not mount the EEPROM (counter memory) sub PCB. Proper management of counter
data can also be violated by reuse of the EEPROM (counter memory) sub PCB. To prevent this,
we do not disclose the part number of the EEPROM (counter memory) in the parts catalog,
stressing that the board shall be handled as an important management part in service operations
at sales companies.
Though the part number is not listed in the catalog, the sub PCB is designated as a service part
with the following part number:
Since service manuals are handed to many, unidentified people, putting information about the
software counter on the service manual may hinder service operations of sales companies.
Therefore, no information about the software counter except for the specifications will be disclosed
in the service manual. Sales companies will receive the information of the software counter other
than specifications via different routes.
