OBJECTIVES OF THE CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT


1. The students should be able to acquire the necessary technical/engineering skills that will prepare him for lead roles in planning, design,
estimates, construction and development of vertical and horizontal structures.
2. Prepare structure for graduates and develop research and extension capabilities.
3. Develop moral character, critical thinking, desirable attitude, personal discipline and aesthetic and cultural values.

II. Course Title: CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND TESTING


III. Course Description:
The course deals with the physical properties of common construction materials primarily metals, plastics, wood,
concrete, coarse and fine aggregates, asphalt and synthetic materials; examination of material properties with respect
to design and use of end product, design and control of aggregates, concrete and asphalt mixtures, principle of testing;
characteristics of test; properties of materials and materials testing equipment.

After completing this course, the student must be able to:


1. Understand the range of various materials for civil engineering projects;
2. Understand relevant properties of common construction materials;
3. Understand applicable local, international and foreign standards on materials and materials testing;
4. Perform measuring, testing and evaluating the results;
5. Ability to test, measure, evaluate the best use of building and construction materials

IX. COURSE REQUIREMENTS


1. Must get an average passing grade in quizzes and major exams, Mid Term and Final Exams.
2. Attend a seminar workshop on experiments in the subject to be performed in a selected Civil Engineering School in the region.
3. Attendance in 80% in total contact hour for the course.
4. Must pass a complete compilation of problem sets on time with complete/detailed solutions.

X. GRADING SYSTEM
1. Attendance/recitation/seatwork 5% 1.00 = 98-100
2. Problem sets/assignments should be complete and correct 10% 1.25 = 95-97
3. Should obtain passing mark in all written examinations 1.50 = 92-94
1.75 = 89-91
a. Quizzes 35%
2.00 = 86-88
b. Midterm 25% 2.25 = 83-85
c. Finals 25% 2.50 = 80-82
2.75 = 77-79
4. A final rating of 75% is a must to pass the subject 100% 3.00 = 75-76 passed
4.00 = 70-74 (Conditional)
5.00 = below 70 (Failure)
