Medical Descriptions for Attendees:

We carry out all the main statutory and industry-standard medical assessements. To help all
attendees understand what each medical involves, we have prepared this summary for your
review.

Offshore OGUK Medical


All offshore workers need a two yearly medical, and a four yearly shoulder measurement
certificate to work offshore in the North Sea region. The medical consists of; a health
questionnaire, following by screeing (BMI, measurement of height, weight, vision, blood
pressure & lung function test), urinalysis (routine urine with immediate result) & audio
(hearing) test. Reviewed by OGUK registered doctor. Information may be required if there
are health conditions or concerns highlighted.

Fitness to train Medical - for CA-EBS COURSES


The OPITO approved BOSIET/FOET and HUET safety courses now include in-water training,
and require a medical test comprising health questionnaire, and a lung test and medical
examination by a doctor to assess fitness to train – with a certificate of fitness required
before you will be allowed to perform the “in-water training” component.

ERT Medicals
Members of Emergency Response Teams (ERT) require a level of fitness. The initial ERT
medical is similar to the OGUK Offshore medical with the addition of an ERT Health review,
Spirometry (lung function test) and a Fitness Test (Cheter Step). An annual review including
Spirometry (lung function test) and a Fitness Test (Cheter Step) is required.

Working at Heights Medical / Renewable UK – Wind Turbines


People whose work entails climbing (i.e. Industrial Abseilers) require a medical to check their
fitness for the specifc work. Medicals carried out which comply with “Renewable UK H&S
Guidelines: Medical Fitness.” The medical includes hearing, lung and eyesight tests, an
Electrocardiogram and a Chester Fitness Step test, and a full examination by a doctor.

Appointed Doctor Medicals


These ‘statutory medicals’ have to be carried out by an appointed doctor who is designated
by HSE.

Lead medicals
Under the Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002, employees exposed to lead will require
a medical review annually, and regular blood tests.

Asbestos medicals (licensed and non licensed)


Under the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2012, employees exposed to asbestos
need regular medical certificate reviews.
Ionising radiation medicals
Fitness for work with ionising radiation medicals under the Ionising Radiations Regulations
1999 (IRR99).

ENG1 Medical
ENG1 Seafarers Medicals are the MCA (Maritime & Coastguard Agency) approved fitness
certification if you are planning to work at sea. This is to certify that you don’t have any
medical conditions that could prevent you from performing your tasks.

Diving’ medicals
All divers must have a valid certificate of medical fitness to dive, which is valid up to a
maximum of 12 months. This is a full examination by a HSE Approved Medical Examiner of
Divers and covers, vision, audio (hearing), Spirometry (lung function test) and a Fitness Test
(Cheter Step).

Drivers’ medicals - HGV / LGV / Taxi


Medical assessments are required for certain categories of professional drivers under DVLA
rules, or under the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations.

Pre-employment health assessments


Details of the job description and the hazards of the specific job are required to enable us to
carry out this assessment. Baseline health surveillance may be advised and/or drug &
alcohol testing.

Food Handlers’ medicals


In order for a business employing food handlers to fulfil their legal obligations under Food
Safety Agency and Regulations, Business Medical can offer health screening for such
employees.
