Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Students have the opportunity to view the video as much as needed, and captions can be available if needed.
Because this is a multimedia video, student engagement is more likely to be higher than verbal instruction.
Lesson idea implementation
As we are continuing our lesson over the Civil Rights Movement, the students will begin to wrap up any
questions they have over the important people of this period. As we continue to move along, the students
will be shown the MLK video, twice through. The first time the students are shown the video, they are paying
attention to the content of the video. The second time the video is played, the students are paying attention
to details of the video. For the wrap up of this lesson, students are expected to create their own iMovie with a
group, covering one other famous people during this period (Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, Lyndon B.
Johnson, and Ceaser Chavez).

As students are working in their groups, their final product will be shared with the class. As the class is
watching each groups videos, they will be expected to jot down 4 pieces of information that was new to them
or that they found interesting to promote understanding. It will be essential that students are taking away
information from other students videos, to help them get a deeper understanding of the content. For this
assignment, students are assuming the role of a leader and educating the class in what the found to be true.
Of course, if there are any errors in the information presented, I will correct it and inform the class of the
correct information.

Importance of technology:

MultiMedia Tools
Using a multimedia authoring tool is critical to the project bc it allows students to take in information, and
then put the information in their own words to educate others. If the students weren’t able to use the
technology, the students would have less opportunity to customize the movie and make it their own. iPad’s
will be the main type of technology used for this project.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Possible issues that can arise from this activity regarding internet safety is the privacy of students. In order to
ensure safety of all students using the technology to create these products, parents AND administrators will
be informed of what we are doing as a class (parents will be notified on class blog along with a take home
paper). To protect the privacy of students, I will encourage students to come up with a group name for their
projects instead of using their real names. For images and pictures, students will be given a limited access to
find them. Animated pictures will also be encouraged for use.
Reflective Practice:
Once this activity is finished, students will have done the following, 1) reviewed material covered on MLK, created their
own project on a civil rights leader, and 3) assumed the role of a teacher, while learning new information from their
classmates. To extend this project, I could of given the students the opportunity to choose someone or something
relevant to what was being taught in class and create a video on that topic. Often when students are working on
projects, their ideas are more likely to be stronger.
