Sermon on Judgment
SUBJECT: Sin
TITLE: Marching To Destruction
PROPOSITION: To illustrate the destructive reality of our sin.
OBJECTIVE: To learn why we desperately need salvation.
INTRODUCTION:
1. Imagine, if you will, the long line of humanity.
1) Adam is first in line; the last baby ever born is last.
a. You are in this line…
b. As is everyone you have ever known. Your fathers and
grandfathers, your sons and your son’s sons.
2) There are two destinations, everlasting life and everlasting
destruction.
3) As you get closer to the end you begin to see a tally board.
On the side of eternal life you see a small number.
4) Then you note with horror that the vast majority that have
gone on before are tallied on the side of everlasting
destruction. Humanity is headed toward Hell.
2. This hour we are going to focus our attention on the destructive
nature of sin.
1) Mankind laughs at the idea that God will send man to Hell for
sin.
2) The reality, however, is that sin causes all of humanity to be
headed toward destruction.
3. On this long trek God has placed warning signs…
DISCUSSION:
1/4
I. THE FALL OF MAN
1. Man doesn’t believe that God would reject him over some
little thing, Matt. 7:21-23
2. It was a piece of fruit consumed by a man who didn’t
even pick it himself…, Gen. 3
3. Man was evicted from Paradise and condemned to die.
II. THE FLOOD
1. Teaches us that God does have the will to condemn men.
8 survived his wrath, Gen. 6-8.
III. THE DESTRUCTION OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH.
1. God will not allow sin to go unpunished. Gen. 18:20-21.
2. This was for a warning to future generations, Gen. 18:19
IV. THE WILDERNESS WANDERING
1. All Israel died in the wilderness. Only their children
entered in. Numbers 14:22-24.
2. Joshua and Caleb were to enter in, Num. 32:11-12
because of their faithfulness.
3. In that wilderness wandering they learned about blood,
forgiveness and atonement. Exo. 12:13
1) They learned that forgiveness takes innocent blood.
Lev. 4.
2) They learned that they owed a life for their sin and
that ignorance was no excuse, Lev. 4.
3) They learned that atonement takes the blood of an
innocent and a prepared representative to gain.
They were helpless to gain it without God’s plan,
Lev. 16:30
V. THE CAPTIVITIES
1. Later in the history of the Israelites they began to see the
sheer numbers of sacrifices made during the feast days.
The gutters of Herod’s temple had sluices to carry off
the blood and drain it into the brook Kidron.
2. Summary of what God did to sinful Israel. 2 Chr. 36:11ff.

2/4
3. During this time man would learn about the problem of
sin, Isa. 59:1-2.
4. The soul that sinneth it shall die. Eze 18:20.
5. Man cannot guide his steps, Jer. 10:23.
VI. THE STATE OF MAN
1. The way of philosophy leads to destruction, Prov. 14:12.
2. The way of goodness leads to nought, Isa. 64:6.
3. Paul puts it this way, Rom. 3:10-19; 3:23; 6:23a.
4. Look around at the vast mass of humanity you are
marching toward eternity with. This describes them.
They comfort themselves claiming…
1) “God won’t condemn anyone, He couldn’t do that.”
2) “There are many ways to God … As long as you’re
sincere.”
3) “I’m as good as anyone else.”
[At this point on the march to eternity it becomes evident that
there just isn’t any hope. You can see the front of the line and the
giant gaping maw of hell is open and man is marching into it. You
hear the screams, you smell the sulphur. You are afraid and you’re
right to be. The word “damned” comes to mind. You bow your
head and accept your fate until…]
VII. THE LAMB OF GOD.
1. The voice of one crying in the wilderness…
2. His message, Behold, the lamb of God, which taketh away
the sin of the world, John 1:29.
3. God had told us to expect Him, Isa. 9:6; 53:5.
4. His name is Jesus for he shall save his people from their
sins, Matt. 1:21.
5. He is born of a virgin, Luke 1:26ff
6. He turns water to wine, John 2:1ff
7. He walks on water, Matt. 14:22ff.
8. He stills the winds and the sea, Mark 4:35ff.
9. He raises the dead, John 11:38ff.
3/4
10. He sheds his blood for atonement for you and me, John
19:34; 1 John 2:2; Rev. 1:5.
11. He rises from the dead on the third day as he said, 1
Cor. 1:3-4.
12. And so much more, John 20:30-31.
VIII.WE WHO ARE MARCHING TO DESTRUCTION GO BACK TO
ROMANS 6:23.
1. We stopped at the end of the verse when we last visited,
“For the wages of sin is death.” We thank God that it’s
not all.
2. Notice the contrast with Acts 2:37 and verse 38.
IX. MOST ARE STILL MARCHING TOWARD DESTRUCTION.
MATT. 7:13-14
1. For the praise of men, John 12:42-43
2. Because of envy, Matt. 27:18.
3. Because of the call of sin, 1 John 2:16.
CONCLUSION:
1. With so much on the line we MUST ask, How do we apply the
blood? Matt. 26:28; Acts 2:38. For the remission of sins.
