Effects of Internet in the Academic Performance of the Senior High School

Students in Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION:

Technology is getting broader as well as it’s uses. At the same time some
schools in the Philippines needs a great deal of improvement. Knowing fully that
internet is an essential tool for facilitating academic activities in schools,
government invested heavily in establishing internet services in some schools in
the Philippines. The services provided by the internet have a huge impact in the
school context, in teaching and learning methods. The internet has made
computers across the globe interconnected.

Internet has a nature that cannot be easily or simply defined. The internet
is a large computer network linking together millions of smaller computers at
numerous sites in various countries belonging to thousands of business,
government, research, educational and other organizations. For the internet
users, internet is a global community that plays a vital role in the teaching and
learning process in academic institutions.

This new form or information resources give a great advantage in millions

of people in many parts of the world. It makes information widely readily
available and accessible. In terms of learning, teaching and research, internet
becomes an asset. As well as internet also serve as a communication device.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:

The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Carmona established Senior High

School in Municipality of Carmona prior to full implementation of K to 12
Curriculum.

But since the site underwent to continuous construction, Local Government

Unit of Carmona decided to use the classrooms and facilities of Carmona National
High School as a temporary campus for Senior High School in Carmona.

It’s first operation at Carmona National High School (CNHS) started last
June 13, 2016 under the supervision of the first principal, Dr. Rowena D.
Mapanoo. There are different relevant strand such as Accountancy Business and
Management (ABM), General Academic Strand (GAS), Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) under Academic Track and Bread and Pastry
Production, Electrical Installation and Management and Shielded Metal Arc
Welding under Technical-Vocational-Livelihood Track. Before, it is known as
Carmona Senior High School because it is under the premises of Carmona
National High school and later change to Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High
School when it transferred to Barangay. Lantic Carmona, Cavite and be a
standalone Senior High School.

We conducted the study in Angelo Levardo Loyola Senior High School to see
what will be the effects of internet in the academic performance of the students
here. Some infrastructures in this school is still under construction and developing
as well as it’s internet connection. We would want to know what will be the
effects of internet in the students when it is established and available to all.

The internet is one of the greatest advancement in the world of

information technology and has become a useful instrument that has fostered the
process of making the world a global village. We all can’t deny that internet has a
great impact on the students academic performance and achievement.

By using the internet, it brings positive effect on their academic

performance, namely by providing information that is necessary to do their
projects, assignments and research and also provide a better learning
experiences. Additionally, internet is also considered as a factor that is needed to
enhance the quality of teaching and learning process. For instance, in internet we
can easily find information by the use of websites or EBooks. In some schools,
teachers expose students to educational games through internet. Students can
learn lessons in a new way that makes learning fun.

Internet in some aspects has a negative effect on the academic

performance of the students. In particular, as being exposed to internet in a long
period of time, students face to face skills are not exercised. Internet supposed to
connect people to one another, the fact that people only talk online instead of
making an effort to meet each other is sending wrong message to students.
Another thing is that internet make the creativity of the students decrease.
Because everything can be found in the internet they will not exert efforts to do
their task anymore. Also, it brings distractions to the students. There’s what we
called non-essential internet use, when people tend to aimlessly surf the internet
for information that they can’t even retain or remember after hours in a session.
That’s what students do as well. Instead of studying and reviewing their lessons
they will just use the internet for non- essential things.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK:

This section discussed the theoretical perspective and major concept which
is the negative and positive effect that is used in this research. The application of
use and gratifications theory explained how the social and technological factors
affect the students engage in internet. Besides, above review also pointed at that
may factors associated to internet causes bad effects in the students. Internet
causes more negative effects among so many groups. One of the effects of
internet is being distracted and irresponsible which will cause negative feedback
to their performance in school.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK:
In figure 1, the independent variables are the following: access on the
internet, Frequency of the internet usage, using internet as a tool for fascilitating
academic activities and exposing the students to internet.

On the other side, in the dependent variable which is the positive and
negative effects of internet in the student’s academic performance. It is the
outcome of all the factors that is indicated on the other side.

This study focuses on the factors and the outcome of the issue to the
performance of the students. Internet is a huge platform that absolutely can
conquer not just the academic methods but also the student’s performance.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS:

This study investigates how students are affected by using internet. It also
investigate how internet affects the student’s academic performances. Others
believed that internet is a big help for students to be active in their academic
performance. But others believed that internet can cause student’s to be inactive
and distracted on academic activities. Despite of being a large source for
information, internet can lead to a problem for students. Students might get
addicted to online games and other websites that can cause lack of time for their
studies. Also, if they are attached to internet they might lose sleep that can affect
their performance in school. Others forget their responsibilities that they need to
do.

Research Questions:

1.What is the demographic profile of the respondents?

2. How can the students access the internet?

3. How can the students be expose to internet?

4. What is the negative and positive effects of internet in the academic

performance of the students?

5. What is the frequency of the internet usage of the students

6. How can internet affect their performance

HYPOTHESIS:

This study is conducted to determine the usefulness of internet to students

in their daily academic life, determine the influence of internet services on
academic performance, find out also the challenges encounter by students for
using internet services. The study reveals that internet has great influence in the
academic performance of students. Although internet benefits the students it can
further more give negative effects towards the performance of the students in
school.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS:

This study is conducted from the Senior High School students in Angelo
Levardo Loyola Senior High School, therefore generalization of findings to the
total population is very limited. Also, the study investigates the impact of the
internet on academic performance. Other variables such as health, gender and
social well being may also affect performance therefore future studies should not
be limited.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

The objective of this study is to identify the effects of internet on the

academic performance of students.

Specifically, the aims of the study are to:

i. Determine the positive and negative effects of internet on the student’s

academic performance.
ii. Determine how the internet gives a great impact in regards to their
studies.
iii. Investigate the problems associated in this issue.

DEFINITION OF TERMS:

Internet – it is a large computer network linking together millions of smaller

computers at numerous sites in various countries.

Students - A person studying to obtain a higher education.

Academic Performance – How well a student is accomplishing his or her

tasks and studies.

RELATED LITERATURE

Oghenetega and Igere (2014), according to them , through the years, the
internet has been a very important instrument for facilitating academic activities
in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The information and communication technology
is sweeping through the world and the gale has even caught up with developing
countries like Nigeria. Internet can broadly be defined as worldwide network of
computers communicating via an agreed upon protocol (rules for exchange of
information).

Emeka and Nyeche (2016), conducted a research on Internet Usage on the

Academic Performance of Undergraduates Students at University of Abuja,
Nigeria. The study shows that majority of students use the internet every day. The
findings revealed that paying for online services was a problem however; the
study shows that Internet is one of the beneficial tools is this era of information
technology not only for business but for academic point of view and enhances the
skill and capability of students which assist them in studies and professional life.

Despite great concerns over excessive internet use. Sinj et al. (2015)
concluded that high internet usage brings better academic results as students get
the opportunity to enter the information world. It is reported that addiction to
internet is a good protector for student’s social skills and academic achievement
(Mami and Hatami-Zad, 2014).Moreover, it is necessary that students are taught
how to use computer facilities and use internet for valid information relating to
their academic work (Mami and Hatami-Zad, 2014; Aitokhuehi et al., 2014). As a
result, internet should be available to all students because of it’s benefits.

In this study, a narrative literature review regarding culture and e-commerce

website design has been introduced. Cultural aspect and e-commerce website
design will play a significant role for successful global e-commerce sites in the
future. Future success of businesses will rely on e-commerce. To compete in the
global e-commerce marketplace, local businesses need to focus on designing
culturally friendly e-commerce websites. To the best of my knowledge, there has
been insignificant research conducted on correlations between culture and e-
commerce website design. The research shows that there are correlations
between e-commerce, culture, and website design. The result of the study
indicates that cultural aspects influence e-commerce website design. This study
aims to deliver a reference source for information systems and information
technology researchers interested in culture and e-commerce website design, and
will show lessfocused research areas in addition to future directions.

The study of Oye et al [19] examines the application of e-learning model to

explain the acceptance of e-learning technology in academic setting. Their study
mainly focuses on the relationship of students‟ use of e-learning and their
academic performance. Their results show that e-learning improves student
academic performance . According to these authors positive perception of e-
learning is crucial to foster the use of e-learning. Although students‟ attitude
influence the intention to use the e-learning, the actual use of e-learning
improves the academic performance of students. Their study is Asian Journal of
Education and e-Learning (ISSN: 2321 – 2454) Volume 04 – Issue 03, June 2016
Asian Online Journals (www.ajouronline.com) 94 from a developing country of
Malaysia which is close to Philippines but its conclusions are in relation to e-
learning perception, attitude and performance. This study does not specifically
address the issue of unintended consequences of elearning but only the intended
consequences of e-learning and the mechanism to improve it.

Another paper by Lumadi et al [14] addresses the impact of e-learning on the

academic performance of student- teachers. They conducted an experiment to
determine if student- teacher taught using method of e-learning performed
better that student-teacher taught using the traditional method of teaching and
learning. Their findings suggests that e-learning has a significant influence on the
performance of students as student-teachers taught using e-learning consistently
perform better than student teacher taught using the traditional method. In their
conclusion , e-learning was found to have a significant effect on student-teachers.
They supported an initial professional development of student-teachers based on
e-learning technologies, change in training approaches, strategies and activities in
order to meet the educational challenges. Their study was focused on South
Africa and could be useful to developing countries such as Philippines. This study
however does not address the issue of unintended consequences of e-learning.

RELATED STUDIES

According to Emeka and Nyeche (2016) , the fact that internet and its
services play an important role on the students academic performances cannot be
over emphasize . This it those through constant exposure of students to up-to-
date information and relevant informant in their various fields of study. The
number of hours spend on the internet will have an effect on the student’s
academic performance . The study shows that the use of internet for study
purpose on academic achievements are directly proportional to each other . It
was revealed that majority of respondents access the internet everyday . Even
though the access to internet services has been grossly affected by the level of
poverty and degree of exposure amongst other factors , the reduction in rates
charged at internet and computer education centers could go along way to
enabling students have more access the latest and useful academic materials . If
this suggestion and other recommendation in this study are taken it consideration
, it is assumed that the future of the internet use and its academic influence on
students is bright.
