Basic data gathering

T0078267

This Service Bulletin contains tips about the information the

workshop should obtain from the customer before the fault
tracing work is started.
In the workshops routines, a lot of the customer information
that is taken up by this Service Bulletin can already be found,
which is why the Bulletin should be seen as a supplement to
the normal routines.
In those cases where a problem, in connection with fault trac-
ing, cannot be solved at the dealer's workshop, the supple-
mentary information could however be needed when
contacting the importer.

Basic data gathering, general

The gathering of basic data is the first step in all fault tracing The driver can often provide valuable information concerning
work. the circumstances surrounding the occurrence of the fault.
The driver is nearly always the one that first discovers a fault.
In addition to information about the vehicle and customer it is
important gather as much information as possible about the Try to gain an understanding of the conditions for the circum-
sequence of events in conjunction with the occurrence of the stances when the fault occurs or occurred.
fault.

Group 59 General data

Since you can seldom recreate the problems experienced,

DRAFT
without creating exactly similar conditions, the driver's infor-
mation is of the greatest importance in order to be able to
make the correct assessments in the ongoing work of fault
tracing.

Copy the pages with the “General questions” and the pages
that cover the fault. Help the informant to fill in the answers to
the questions and save the form together with the work order.

The driver must be able to provide answers to the follow-

ing questions:

• Recently, was there any intervention in the electrical,

mechanical or pneumatic system?
• Have any fault codes been set?
• Description of the fault.
• When the fault occurred.
• How the fault was discovered and what happened im-
mediately prior to this?
• Does the fault re-occur?
• How often does the fault re-occur?
• How long does the fault last when it does occur.
• Does the fault always occur under the same condi-
tions and if so what are these?
• Does the driver have any idea of what the possible
cause of the fault may be?
• Does the fault still exist?

Diagnostic Philosophy
• One problem is solved at a time. Diagnostics don’t
consider multiple problems.
• Resolve code related problems first
• Before doing actual test, read test completely
• Don’t skip the steps
• Refer Design and function for understanding the
functionality
• Refer Wiring Diagram manual for additional details of
Vehicle harness
• Use recommended tools while performing tests
• One problem need to be handled at a time
• Simple and faster steps need to be done first
• End point Diagnostics solves the problem quicker
