COMMISSIONING PROCEDURE FOR TURBINE DRIVEN BOILER FEED PUMP

SL.NO STATUS

1.0 PLANT DETAILS

The Boiler Feed system consists of three Boiler Feed Pump sets
for each unit of JPL (2 Turbine Driven and 1 motor driven). Each
pump set is of 50% capacity, which takes suction from the de-
aerator and discharge the Feed Water to series of HP heaters,
economizer and finally to boiler drum.

The important technical data of Boiler Feed booster pumps and


Boiler Feed pumps are same as mentioned in testing schedule of
MDBFP NO.PS-DC-…-….-…..

2.0 OBJECTIVE

To commission 2 Nos Turbine driven boiler feed pumps and


associated auxiliaries and make them available for unit operation.

4.8 Availability of steam for turbine.

5.1 Debris in and around BFP area shall be removed.

5.2 First aid kit is available near the test area.

5.3 Operation of local start / stop push button shall be ensured for
perfect operation to facilitate for stopping of equipment in case of
necessity.

5.4 Approach / stair case / platform wherever required are made


available.

5.5 Portable fire fighting system made available at test area.

5.6 Coupling guards are properly fixed.

5.7 Safety appliances like helmet, hand gloves available for operating
personnel.

6.0 EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

6.1 The test team should be aware of the procedure to be adopted in


case of damage to machinery / injury of any personnel connected
to the activity.

6.2 The test team should be well aware of the procedures to be


adopted in case of any abnormality in the activity.

7.0 STATE OF THE PLANT

7.1 Booster pump, Gearbox, Turbine, BFP and associated system


are erected as per recommended drawing.

7.2 Acid cleaning and oil flushing completed for lube oil and working
oil, Jacking oil and governing oil piping as per test procedure
No………. and lines are normalized.

7.3 Detergent flushing of feed water suction, discharge and


recirculation piping are completed and all piping normalized.

7.4 All piping supports are loaded to the rated value.

7.5 De-aerator filled with fresh DM water with proper level indication
and instrumentation completed.

7.6 Flushing of following pipe lines completed.

a) Cooling water lines of Booster pump and BFP (Seal Water


cooler and seal body)
b) Balancing leak off lines of main pump.
c) Turbine exhausts hood spray line.

7.7 Turbo-visory instrumentation completed.

7.8 Erection of turbine complete and log sheets are filled, signed by
concerned agencies.

7.9 Insulation of turbine and steam lines complete.

7.10 Steam blowing of live steam line complete and steam piping
normalized.

7.11 Erection of gland steam supply piping complete. Supports, steam
blowing and insulation complete.

7.12 Turbine drain piping and all steam piping drain lines are
complete. For initial rolling orifice plates in drains are removed to
avoid chocking.

7.13 Turbine exhausts piping complete with supports up to condenser.

7.14 Bursting diaphragm is erected and healthy.

7.15 Gland leak off piping erection complete to condenser (including


supports and insulation)

7.16 All motorized valves related to turbine including live steam


isolation valves, turbine drain valves are commissioned.

7.17 Gland steam pressure controller commissioned available for


operation.

7.18 Governing valves erected and protection devices like over speed
trip device, hand trip device are mounted properly.

7.19 Feed water suction strainer erected in position in clean condition


with DP indicator commissioned.

7.20 All erection log sheets are followed up / signed by concerned


agencies with respect to clearances and alignment data.

7.21 Instrument and service air line for the Feed pump system erected
and the air is made available for operation.

7.22 All local and remote instrumentation for the system is complete.

7.23 Insulation of the following completed.

8.0 METHOD

8.1 Commissioning of Oil System and Turning Gear Operation of BFP Turbine

8.1.1 Ensure oil flushing of lube oil system completed and piping are
normalized.

8.1.2 Ensure that the turbine is disconnected from gear box and main pump.

8.1.3 Ensure completion of lube oil inlet lines with throttles / orifices pressure
gauges and return lines with view glass and temperature gauges

8.1.4 Check healthiness of bearing metal temperature detectors of turbine,


main pump and booster pump.

8.1.5 Ensure proper mounting of speed probes and turbo-visory probes.

8.1.6 Ensure the completion of Jacking Oil of lines with throttle valve, NRV
and isolating valve.

8.1.7 Ensure healthy filter elements in MOP, AOP, EOP suction lines, MOP,
AOP and EOP discharge lines and JOP suction line.

SL.NO STATUS

8.1.8 Ensure oil is filled in MOT through centrifuge to adequate level.

8.1.9 Keep open the vents of lube oil coolers and filters.

8.1.10 Keep the changeover valve of lube oil cooler and filter in such a way
that only one cooler ad filter will be in service.

8.1.11 Ensure drains of lube oil coolers, filters are closed.

8.1.12 Start one of the oil vapour fans with its suction valve open
condition.

8.1.13 Start one of the lube oil pumps ensuring flow through
recirculation.

8.1.14 Adjust lube oil header pressure control valve to maintain lube oil
pressure of 2.5 kg/cm2 after control station.

8.1.15 Adjust lube oil discharge pressure to ….kg/cm 2 by setting


recirculation control valve.

8.1.16 By operating isolating valve of recirculation control valve, check


the safety valve popping and adjust if required.

8.1.17 Check the lube oil flow to the bearing of turbine, main pump and
booster pump.

8.1.18 Monitor lube oil duplex filter DP.

8.1.19 Stop the pump and start other lube oil pump and check its
discharge safety valve popping and adjust if required.

8.1.20 Stop running pump and start DC EOP.

8.1.21 Ensure adequate lube oil pressure and flow. Keep DC EOP
running for 4 hours to check the healthiness.

8.1.22 Stop DC EOP and keep lube oil pump in service

8.1.23 Charge the suction line of JOP from lube oil header.

8.1.24 Start JOP and adjust the safety relief valve to …. kg/cm2.

8.1.25 Adjust pressure regulating valve to …. kg/cm2

8.1.26 Adjust the throttle valves in Jacking oil supply to front and rear
journal bearings such that the rotor lifts around 0.05 to 0.1 mm.
Stop JOP and start again. Check and record the Jacking oil
pressures and rotor lifts in the turbine front and rear journal
bearings.

8.1.27 Check and ensure the freeness of rotor for rotation by engaging
hand barring lever and then stop JOP.

8.1.28 Ensure auto operation of AOP I, AOP II and DC EOP through


corresponding pressure switches operation.

8.1.29 Keep AOP I in service, AOP II and EOP on auto.

8.1.30 Ensure oil temperature more than 400C

8.1.31 Charge cooling water to cooler and ensure oil temperature control
valve auto operation.

8.1.32 Start JOP and open turning gear valve.

8.1.33 Once the rotor picks up speed, turning gear valve may be closed
for checking the rotor for possible rubbing at end gland seals,
heat shields, oil guards etc., while coasting down.

8.1.34 If the rotor is found smooth till it comes to standstill, turning gear
valve may be opened full.

8.1.35 Ensure turning gear speed of around ... RPM and smooth
running.

8.1.36 Observe and record bearing metal temperatures, vibrations,


eccentricity etc.,

8.1.37 Run for 8 hours. stop turning gear and observe coasting down.

8.2.0 Commissioning of Governing System of BFP Turbine

8.2.1 Check that the connection from governing rack to governing


elements and at the governing rack is as per governing scheme.

8.2.2 Ensure main and auxiliary control valves lift reference indicator is
fixed and set to zero position.

8.2.3 Check the damping valve in HP and LP secondary oil lines are
kept open by few turns.

8.2.4 Check the filter elements at the control rack of the duplex filter
are clean and healthy.

8.2.5 Ensure emergency stop valve open / close limit switches


mounted.

8.2.6 Switch off the supply to the following solenoids.

a) Trip solenoid valves,


b) Remote reset of trip lever solenoid valve.
c) Power supply off to the I/H convertors.

8.2.7 Ensure lube oil pump in service and charge governing oil to the
governing system.

8.2.8 Ensure all pressure switches and pressure gauges in governing


rack are charged and their drain valves are closed.

8.2.9 Reset the turbine locally and ensure following:

a) Trip oil pressure more than …. kg/cm2.


b) Stop and control valves in closed condition.
c) HP and LP secondary oil pressures less than …. kg/cm 2

8.2.10 Ensure oil temperature of 45-50 deg C during governing system


adjustment.

8.2.11 Opening / closing of emergency stop valve.

8.2.11.1 Ensure power supply for solenoids …. and …. (It will be normally
in de energized condition)

8.2.11.2 Ensure no steam available ahead of ESV and live steam isolating
valve in closed condition.

8.2.11.3 Give open command to ESV and observe the following sequential
operation of solenoid valves ….. And ……..

a) Both solenoids energies. Oil pressure above piston more


than 5 kg/cm2 and below disc 0 kg/cm2
b) Solenoids …. de energies oil pressure above piston more
than .. kg/cm2 and below disc more than 5 kg/cm2.
c) Solenoid ….. also de energies. Oil from above piston
starts draining gradually through orifice and ESV opens.
d) When ESV full open oil pressure below disc is more than
5 kg/cm2 and above piston ‘0’ kg/cm2. Adjust open limit
switch and check feedback available in control room.

8.2.11.4 By tripping turbine trip lever, ensure tripping/closing of ESV.


Check close feedback available in control room.

8.2.12 Reset the turbine from remote by energising solenoid ….. Ensure
the same solenoid gets automatically de energised when trip oil
pressure raises more than …kg/cm2 through pressure switch.

8.2.13 Switch on power supply to HP and LP I/H convertors.

8.2.14 Give 4 mA current to HP I/H convertor with external source or


through governor panel.

8.2.15 Ensure HP sec. Oil pressure of … kg/cm2. If not set the pressure
to …. kg/cm2 by adjusting potentiometer XO in I/H convertor.

8.2.16 Check that the control valve servomotor pilot is rotating freely and
having a slight up and down movements.

8.2.17 Check the main control valve servomotor is just opened, by 0.2
mm. The start of opening can be measured by fixing dial gauge
on servomotor.

8.2.18 If the start of opening is not correct adjust the adjustment screw
of the pilot slide to achieve the start of opening.

8.2.19 Raise the current to I/H convertor to 20 mA. Observe HP sec oil
pressure increases to …. kg/cm2. If not adjust the potentiometer
X1 of I/H convertor to achieve the pressure.

8.2.20 Check the main control valve servomotor lift is maximum. If the lift
is not correct adjust feed back angle to obtain the full lift.

8.2.21 Check and adjust auxiliary control valve servomotor similarly as


done for main control valve through steps 8.2.14 to 8.2.20.

8.2.22 Record control valve characteristics (from 4 mA to 20 mA to I/H


convertor)

8.2.23 Compare the characteristics and ensure these are in line with
governing adjustment diagram/ shop floor test protocol.

8.2.24 Operate the tester for ESV and ensure partial closing of ESV and
put back the tester in normal position, ESV opens back to full
open position.

8.2.25 Energies the remote trip solenoid ….. ./ …… and ensure the
following.

a) ESV closed.
b) Main control valve is closed
c) Auxiliary control valve is closed.
d) Trip oil pressure is zero.

8.3 Steam rolling and actual over speeding of Turbine (solo run
of turbine)

8.3.1 Ensure that Gear box and main pump are disconnected from the
turbine.

8.3.2 Ensure healthiness of turbo visory system.

8.3.3 Ensure proper clearance at the holding down bolts of turbine


casing and front bearing pedestal.

8.3.4 Ensure tightness of flanges in the turbine casing and exhaust


line.

8.3.5 Check that all the temporary supports are removed from turbine
casing, steam lines, oil lines etc.,

8.3.6 Ensure that the TD BFP foundation is separated from the main
turbine foundation all around and the support spring assembly of
TD BFP is properly placed.

8.3.7 Start oil system. Keep the turbine on hydraulic barring. Record
the measurements of oil system and turbo visory.

8.3.8 Installs dial gauges for checking even expansion of the casing
and pedestal.

8.3.9 Warm up gland sealing steam supply header ensure


measurement of sealing steam supply temperature.

8.3.10 Keep open casing drain and balance piston loop drain valves.

8.3.11 Observe vacuum created in turbine casing and exhaust line.


Check for tightness of exhaust line and casing joints.

8.3.12 Keep the gland steam controller on auto and observe that it
maintains properly.

8.3.13 Gradually open the exhaust butterfly valve in steps, keeping a


watch on the vacuum in the condenser.

8.3.14 Check the protections of the turbine. A typical list of turbine


protections are given below:

a) Lube oil pressure very low.


b) Condenser vacuum very low.
c) Turbine exhausts temperature very high.
d) Control oil pressure very low.

8.2.25 Soak the turbine at …. rpm for about 30 minutes observe the
parameters are stabilized.

8.2.26 Raise the speed of the turbine gradually to rated speed as per
start up curve, given in O & M manual.

8.2.27 Monitor the behavior of control valve during warming up speed


and at rated speed for any hunting.

8.2.28 At rated speed soak the machine for 15 minutes, observe for all
parameters. Adjust lube oil flow to bearings if required.

8.2.29 Carry out oil injection test of over speed governor for few times to
check repeatability of the action.

8.2.30 Keep exhaust hood spray system on auto. Ensure its operation.

8.2.31 Carryout actual over speeding test of the turbine if the


parameters such as vibration within limits and the casing
expansion is more than 2 mm.

8.2.32 If actual over speed trip does not occur at required value, hand
trip the turbine and adjustment to be done at emergency
governor.

8.2.33 Keep the hot turbine on hydraulic barring, ensuring gradual


cooling down.

8.4 Commissioning of Turbine Driven Boiler Feed Pump.

8.4.1 Ensure alignment readings are logged and cleared for coupling.

8.4.2 Couple turbine with BFP and Gearbox. Couple gearbox with
booster pump.

8.4.3 Crack open feed water suction isolating valve and vent out air in
all the vents.

8.4.4 Flush and shut the booster pump casing drain and BFP drain and
interconnecting pipe drain.

8.4.5 Check all the instrument tapping point isolating valves are open
and that all drain and equalizing valves are shut.

8.4.6 Gradually open suction isolating valve keeping watch on the trend
of differential temperature of top and bottom of the main pump
casing.

8.4.7 Check mechanical seal water control isolating valves are open for
Booster pump and BFP.

8.4.8 Check magnetic separator isolating valves for BFP seal water are
open.

8.4.9 Ensure cooling water flow through all coolers.

a) Booster pumps seal water cooler.


b) BFP seal water cooler.
c) Lube oil cooler
d) Jacket cooling of mechanical seals of Booster pump and
BFP.

8.4.10 Ensure isolating valves in recirculation line and leak off line are
open.

8.4.11 Ensure all alarm points and measuring points available in


DCS/local.

8.4.12 Ensure all flanged joints are tightened properly with proper
gaskets.

8.4.13 Ensure proper clearance at the holding down bolts of the booster
pump and main pump.

8.4.14 Check the booster pump and main pump.

8.4.15 Ensure oil system in service. Start jacking oil pump.

8.4.16 Engage the main pump with turbine.

8.4.17 Check the freeness of Turbine rotor along with booster pump and
main pump by hand barring.

8.4.18 Disengage the main pump and keep the turbine on hydraulic
barring and prepare the turbine for steam rolling.

8.4.19 When the turbine is ready for steam rolling, stop the turbine and
engage the main pump with turbine.

8.4.20 Keep the turbine along with main pump and booster pump on
hydraulic barring.

8.4.21 Raise the speed of the TDBFP to rated speed as per start up
curve.

8.4.22 Keep the pump on recirculation flow of approximately 250 T/hr for
8 hours to observe and record performance.

8.4.23 Check lubes oil flow through return oil sight glasses.

8.4.24 Check for any undue noise, vibration in bearings, seals and
pumps,
