1.0 PLANT DETAILS:

1.1 Turbine and Generator Train is supported on 8 No of bearings, thrust

bearing at HP rear.

1.2 Oil pumps for lubrication consisting of 2 Nos Aux. Oil pumps, one No. of
DC EOP and one number Main oil pump with connected pipe lines.

1.3 Jacking oil pumps two AC driven one DC driven with connected pipe
lines.

1.4 Oil tank to hold the required quantity of oil.

1.5 Auxiliary oil pumps, Jacking oil pumps and oil vapour exhaust fans 2
nos are mounted on the top of oil tank.

1.6 Level gauge and probes are installed to indicate and give alarm
whenever the level variation is there from low to high.

1.7 One number duplex filter is there in the oil line to thrust bearing to
prevent the solid partides more than 37 micron. entering into the thrust
bearing.

1.8 One number bucket filter is installed inside the oil tank.

1.9 Throttles are there to regulate the oil flow into the bearings and one
throttle at discharge of pumps to adjust the oil pressure of lub oil
header.

SLNO STATUS

1.10 Two numbers of coolers are there to maintain the lube oil temperature
along with temperature control valve.

1.11 One number oil turbine is mounted on the IP rear coupling to run the
shat system at low speed during startup and shutdown of turbine.
Provision for hand baring is also available.

1.12 One number pressure relief valve in the JOP line.

1.13 One number NRV in JOP line going to each bearing.

2.0 OBJECTIVE:

To rotate the turbine rotor system continuously on low speed during

start up and shutdown of the machine. This is to overcome the
breakaway torque during start-up and enable uniform cooling of the
rotor system during shutdown to prevent distortion of rotor.

3.0 PROPOSAL:

To run the barring gear for 8 hours continuously for observing the
performance.

SLNO STATUS

6.0 EMERGENCY PROCEDURE:

6.1 The operating personnel shall be aware of steps to be taken during

power supply failure and oil pumps tripping.

6.2 They shall also be aware of the procedure to be followed in case of

accident involving injury to personnel.

6.3 They shall intimate the abnormal condition of the equipments to shift in
charge.

7.0 STATE OF THE PLANT:

7.1 Any one of AOPs is in service and the other is kept on standby.

7.2 DC emergency oil pump is on auto mode.

7.3 Any one of JOPs is in service and the other is kept on standby.

7.4 DC JOP is kept on auto mode.

7.5 Oil temperature controller is put on auto.

7.6 Coolers are charged with cooling water.

7.7 All instrumentations are kept in service.

7.8 Machine is ready for bearing gear operation.

7.9 Open and close limit switches of gate valve gearing are set and the
operation of valve is checked.

7.10 Throttles in the lube oil line to individual bearing are set for its required
flow. Turbovisory instruments are calibrated & ready for barring
operation.

Commissioning Procedure for Turbine Barring Gear

SLNO STATUS

8.0 METHOD:

8.1 Set the throttle for the oil system to maintain the lube oil header
pressure to the required valve.

8.2 Set the throttles in the lube oil lines to individual bearings to maintain
the required flow to the bearings. Ensure the oil flow through view glass
in the return line.

8.3 SGC of oil system is commissioned.

8.4 SLC of pumps is commissioned and the auto changeover of oil pumps
is established.

8.5 Check the functioning of oil temperature controller

8.6 Adjust the pressure control valve in the JOP discharge line to maintain
the required header pressure.

8.7 Check the SLC operation of Jack oil pumps.

8.8 Stop the Jack oil pump and mount dial gauges on the shaft nearer to
the bearings. This is to measure the lift of the shaft with Job.

8.9 Start one JOP and note down the lift of the shaft at each bearing. If the
lift is zero at any one of bearings adjust the isolating valve in the JOP
lines to bearings to alter the lift oil pressure and initiate the lift. The lift
should be at least 0.02 mm min, & 0.1 mm maximum.

8.10 Do hand barring and it should rotate freely. If it is found difficult, check
the lift again at all the bearings and improve the same if it is zero at any
of bearings.

SLNO STATUS

8.11 Hook-up the interlock and protection for barring gear and check the
same.

8.12 Put the machine on baring gear first by opening the gate valve gearing
and then starting the JOP.

8.13 The speed of the shaft system shall increase and attain the specified
speed.

8.14 Check for any rubbing of seals and sound in the bearings by means of
hearing rod. If no sound is heard, allow it to run for some time.

8.15 Stop the bearing gear by closing the gate valve gearing and note down
the coasting down time.

8.16 Again open the gate valve gearing and run the barring gear for 8 hrs to
check its performance.

8.17 Note down the following readings every hour.

1. Lube oil header pressure

2. Lube oil temperature
3. Thrust position.
4. Bearing and shaft vibration
5. Speed
6. Bearing babbit temperature.
7. JOP header pressure and the same at individual bearing.
8. Return oil temperature.

9.0 COMPLETION CRITERIA:

If the above parameters for 8 hrs. Barring is found normal, the trial run
of barring gear operation is successful.
