Part of my research was undertaken at the Graduate Center of the
City University of New York, where I was a Visiting Scholar in 2016.
Heartfelt thanks to Frank Hentschker, Director of the Martin E. Segal
Centre, for making me feel at home within that vibrant community of
academics and artists. Also to the Faculty members Professor Marvin
Carlson and Professor Peter Eckersall for sharing their valuable insights
on the contemporary theatre scene internationally. While in New York,
I had the opportunity to speak with various theatre artists, holding con-
versations that have affected my perception of directing and that have, in
one way or another, featured here. I am grateful to John Collins, Artistic
Director of Elevator Repair Service, who kindly agreed to share his cre-
ative process in the Web Companion section of the book. Special thanks
to Charles Mee, whose writing has always been of great inspiration, and
to Anne Bogart for her valuable intuitions.
This project was greatly assisted by the opportunities I have had to
teach and conduct practical workshops in different parts of the world
in order to test empirically some of the exercises that are part and par-
cel of the book as well as to explore alternative forms of practice. I am
thankful to the Japan Foundation for the generous grant that allowed
me to spend time as a visiting fellow at the University of Tokyo and to
Professor Tadashi Uchino for exposing me to the distinct methodologies
of Japanese theatre. I am also indebted to Jay Scheib, stage director and
Head of the Music and Theater Arts Department at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, for inviting me over as a Visiting Researcher.
Also to Dr. George Rodosthenous at the University of Leeds for giving
me the opportunity to lecture and work with directing students at the

work and their thoughts on whether directing can be taught and on what
makes for a valuable directing education.
In the final analysis, the book envisions the practicalities of economy
and style. Αnd while Directions for Directing is primarily addressed
to directors, actors, playwrights, and other theatre artists, one should
never ignore the numerous and ever supportive theatre aficionados who
wish to know more about the making of a play and the development of a
form, following the journey of an art product throughout its tumultuous
lifespan. In this light, the book is a methodology of staging plays an-
swering to the fundamental questions of why, where, when, and how a
text can be rendered performance, once an idea strikes you and the skin
of imagination is torn open. It is a small token of appreciation to every
theatre-loving person, another gateway to the mysteries of the director’s
art, the codes, and formulas of the stage.
