Assessment Task 1 Instructions

 Provide answers to all of the questions below:

1. Explain the concept of self-appraisal and how can it contribute to a performance review.
Answer: Self-appraisal within a performance management or annual performance review system involves
asking the employee to self-evaluate his or her job performance.
It has number of benefits the formal performance review as follow:-

o By having employees do some sort of self-evaluation before the actual review meeting, the review
meetings can be shorter.
o If done properly and tactfully, encouraging employees to self-evaluation or self-appraise at any
time during the year, including around the actual review meetings, help convey the message that
the process of performance management and appraisal is a team effort, and not something the
manager does to the employee. This greases the wheels of the process, making it more effective.
o Whey self-appraisal is an accepted and integrated part of the performance management process;
it encourages employees to self-evaluate throughout the year.

2. Explain the concept of peer appraisal and outline one benefit of peer appraisal.
Answer: Peer appraisal is a form of 360 degree feedback and performance appraisal process. Peers of an
individual give feedback for the individual which gives a unique perspective to the work and goal
achievement of an individual. While managers and other appraisal systems tend to provide a perspective
on targets and goals achieved by an individual, peer appraisal tends to give an perspective on the
interpersonal skills of an individual and his interaction base with the customer and team in which he is
working. The benefit of peer appraisal is peer appraisals are quite accurate in predicting who will be
promoted.

3. Outline three benefits of planning work.

Answer:

 Keeps Costs under Control

A well-developed project plan and schedule allows you to manage your project costs more efficiently.
When developing the plan, you can list the estimated investment required to complete each step then
calculate the total cost of the project. As you navigate each step on your plan you can monitor how closely
you are sticking to your cost estimates, make adjustments and explore alternative options if you find that
your original course of action is not consistent with your budget.

 Preparation for Unexpected

©Aventia Institute 2017 Aventia Institute- RTO NO (41418) Page 10
BSBWOR501 Manage personal work priorities and professional development Student Assessment Tasks

Another benefit of planning and scheduling is that your small company is better prepared in case of an
unexpected occurrence compared with not outlining a plan ahead of time. A thorough plan contains
multiple solution one as the main course of action and the rest as backups to that preferred option. If the
unexpected occurs, you can then default to Plan B and continue seamlessly throughout the project.

 Streamlines Communication

When you plan and schedule your projects, it also helps improve communication among your team. All
members have the same guideline to follow when working so they are all on the same page. If any of your
employees are confused about the process or timeline, they can simply refer to the written plan. As the
manager, you can also use the plan for as a guideline when communicating with your team at progress
meetings. Since everything is written down, there is little room for disagreements or confusion.

4. Outline each of the letters in the acronym SMART in relation to goals.

Answer: Each one should be SMART:-
1. Specific
Your goal should be clear and specific, otherwise you won't be able to focus your efforts or feel truly
motivated to achieve it. When drafting your goal, try to answer the five "W" questions:

 What do I want to accomplish?

 Why is this goal important?

 Who is involved?

 Where is it located?

 Which resources or limits are involved?

2. Measurable
It's important to have measurable goals, so that you can track your progress and stay motivated. Assessing
progress helps you to stay focused, meet your deadlines, and feel the excitement of getting closer to
achieving your goal.
A measurable goal should address questions such as:

 How much?

 How many?

 How will I know when it is accomplished?

©Aventia Institute 2017 Aventia Institute- RTO NO (41418) Page 11

BSBWOR501 Manage personal work priorities and professional development Student Assessment Tasks

3. Achievable
Your goal also needs to be realistic and attainable to be successful. In other words, it should stretch your
abilities but still remain possible. When you set an achievable goal, you may be able to identify previously
overlooked opportunities or resources that can bring you closer to it.
An achievable goal will usually answer questions such as:

 How can I accomplish this goal?

 How realistic is the goal, based on other constraints, such as financial factors?

4. Relevant
This step is about ensuring that your goal matters to you, and that it also aligns with other relevant goals.
We all need support and assistance in achieving our goals, but it's important to retain control over them.
So, make sure that your plans drive everyone forward, but that you're still responsible for achieving your
own goal.
A relevant goal can answer "yes" to these questions:

 Does this seem worthwhile?

 Is this the right time?

 Does this match our other efforts/needs?

 Am I the right person to reach this goal?

5. Time-bound
Every goal needs a target date, so that you have a deadline to focus on and something to work toward.
This part of the SMART goal criteria helps to prevent everyday tasks from taking priority over your longer-
term goals.
A time-bound goal will usually answer these questions:

 When?

 What can I do six months from now?

 What can I do six weeks from now?

 What can I do today?

5. Discuss the concept of the Pareto Principle in relation to time management.

Answer: Pareto’s concept of focusing on what is going to make a difference is neatly captured in his own
words "If you are Noah, and your ark is about to sink, look for the elephants first, because you can throw
over a bunch of cats, dogs, squirrels, and everything else that is just a small animal and your ark will keep
©Aventia Institute 2017 Aventia Institute- RTO NO (41418) Page 12
BSBWOR501 Manage personal work priorities and professional development Student Assessment Tasks

sinking. But if you can find one elephant to get overboard, you're in much better shape." Your compass is
the goals or objectives that you are aiming to achieve in this week, this quarter, or this year. Your top
priorities are those that are aligned with your performance criteria, key result areas, or goals. Any
incoming information or requests for your time need to be assessed against your goals and objectives.
Once this is down you can assign the incoming a task a priority. At work these are those things that you are
measured against. In your personal life they are the pursuit of those things that matter most to you or your
family.

6. Outline five signs of stress.

Answer: The five signs of stress according to me are as follow:-
1. Taking more time off work than usual.
2. Greater use of substances such as alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
3. Increased irritability, poor concentration, reduced productivity.
4. Deteriorating personal or work relationships, including bullying behaviors.
5. Becoming more ‘emotional’, moody or over-reactive to what others say.

7. Explain the concept of work-life balance.

Answer: A ‘work life’ balance refers to an employee’s ability to maintain a healthy balance between their
work roles, their personal responsibilities, and family life. Companies are increasingly recognizing the
importance of helping their employees to achieve this balance as more staff are experiencing conflict
between their work and personal roles. In today’s age, many workers are seeing their personal
responsibilities increase, from childcare and elderly care, to volunteer work, and family commitments. This
comes at a time when their work responsibilities are also increasing, resulting in a conflict between
personal and work commitments and an increase in stress.

8. Outline five strategies that can be used to manage stress and achieve a healthy work-life
balance.
Answer: The five strategies that can be used to manage stress and achieve a healthy work-life balance
are:-
1. Be open about your needs. I believe that the first thing people need to do is identify what truly
matters to them and communicate it. Don’t hide it and don’t expect others to guess what makes
you feel balanced and fulfilled.
2. Respect boundaries. You cannot achieve your balance if you don’t respect the boundaries you
have put in place. It will be hard in the beginning but you need to stick with it so you develop a
routine and drive a culture and lifestyle of predictability.
3. Understand what really matters. Over the years I have seen too many people spend too much
time working on things that don’t really matter. Time is the most valuable commodity in life: it is
the one thing you cannot buy more of. So, don’t waste time. Focus on what really matters

4. Embrace the off button. Pretty much every piece of technology has an off button, so use it. It is
not easy and for many people this is the hardest thing to do. To get started, do it in phases. Don’t
bring your cellphone to the dinner table. When you are on vacation, be on vacation. Don’t bring
your tablet to the beach. Once you have done it a few times, it is easier to push the boundaries.
5. Pace yourself. To have a long, healthy, productive, and happy life and career you need to
understand the value of pace. There are times when you need to throttle up and there are times

©Aventia Institute 2017 Aventia Institute- RTO NO (41418) Page 13

BSBWOR501 Manage personal work priorities and professional development Student Assessment Tasks

when you can throttle down. Self-awareness is crucial. Doing so will help you enjoy the journey as
much as the destination.

9. Discuss the negative effect of technology on work-life balance.

Answer: Trying to stay ahead of the curve and meet deadlines helps us to progress at work. However, this
can often lead to long hours, missed meals and checking work email late at night which can have a
negative effect on productivity. It is safe to say that technology is not helping us maintain a healthy work-
life balance. Many of us either have at least one phone synced to our work emails. This means we’re on
call 24/7 responding to calls and queries as soon as they come in, leaving us thinking about work, on edge
expecting a call or email, when we should be winding down. Lack of sleep and late nights have left workers
experiencing mental health problems and taking sick leave from work. People feel that working long hours
is affecting their sleep, loss appetite and experience physical problems.

10. Discuss three strategies that a business can use to ensure their workers maintain a healthy
work-life balance.
Answer: According to me a business should use following strategies:-

1. Company Outings:-One of the best ways to boost employee morale and help workers get to know
each other in a non-stressful capacity is by offering an occasional company outing. This type of
outing can be as low-key or as extravagant as you like, depending on your company’s culture and
budget for such things.
2. Offer Community Engagement Opportunities: - Another great way to connect the dots between
work time and out-of-work time is to offer community engagement activities that are meaningful
and beneficial. For example, you could consider offering eight hours per year of paid volunteer
time to your employees as an incentive to get involved in important community causes.
3. Ask Employees for Guidance: - Who better to consult about what employees in your office truly
need than the employees themselves! If you get a sense that your employees are struggling with
work-life balance, ask them what changes around the workplace might help. You might be
surprised what you hear.

11. Outline five ways to develop new work skills

Answer: - The five ways are as follows:-
1. Get a mentor & be a mentor.
Having a mentor at work is crucial to attaining new skills and knowledge. A good mentor will help you
solve some of the challenges and roadblocks you face. The best mentors will help you figure out next steps
that work for you and help guide you over hurdles that sit squarely in your blind spot. Amazing mentors
will be the people who tell you what you need to hear and not what you want to hear. They will give you
the real feedback you need to fill in your blind spots that put you in a position to advance.

2. Raise your hand for new challenges.

When you see new opportunities to learn new skills, go for it. If there is something in the company you
want to learn to do and you see an opportunity to learn those skills in a special project or a new
assignment, make the grab. Do a little extra when it is required to learn those new skills that you need to
advance. Remember, it is not aggressive to reach for a new opportunity. It is helpful, useful, and valuable.

3. Read and look for problems to solve.

©Aventia Institute 2017 Aventia Institute- RTO NO (41418) Page 14

BSBWOR501 Manage personal work priorities and professional development Student Assessment Tasks

Sometimes, there are not a lot of grabs to make. I understand that. In that case, I recommend that you
start reading everything you can about your industry and your field. Study everything there is to know
about your company and their competitors. Know the company goals and unique selling points of your
company like the back of your hand.

4. Make friends in other departments.

Many times new skills are outside your department or area of influence and responsibility. To overcome
this, think about networking internally. Get to know people in other divisions, other offices, and on other
teams. Be curious about their department. Learn everything you can about their job and their skills. Find
out how they got those skills and see how you might be able to chip in over there in your spare time to get
those skills you want to use to advance.

5. Find the learning opportunities internally.

The last one is one I always forget about. Many companies have some sort of internal learning system. Go
talk to your benefits team. Find out about training opportunities available to you. Learn about any tuition
re-imbursement benefits you may have. Talk with your HR team about what you want to learn and how it
can help the company.

12. Outline two ways to more effectively manage time at work.

Answer:
1. Plan ahead: - One of the worst things you can do is jump into the workday with no clear idea
about what needs to get done. The time you spend thinking ahead and planning your activities is
trivial compared with the time you’ll lose jumping from one thing to the next (and rarely
completing anything). Depending on your personality, try one of these options:
 The night before - At the end of the day, take 15 minutes to clear your desk and put together a list
of the next day’s most pressing tasks. It’s a great decompression technique, and you’ll feel better
sitting down at a clean desk in the morning.
 First thing in the morning - Arrive a few minutes early and assemble your prioritized to-do list. This
may prove to be the most productive part of your day.

2. Eliminate distractions: - Start paying attention to the number of times someone interrupts you
when you’re in the midst of an important task. Track self-induced interruptions, too, particularly
those of the social media variety. Your smartphone is extremely useful, but it’s also addictive and
among the most insidious time-wasters known to mankind.

13. Discuss the concept of personal development planning.

Answer: Personal development planning is the process of creating an action plan based on awareness,
values, reflection, goal-setting and planning for personal development within the context of a career,
education, relationship or for self-improvement. The primary aim of PDP or individual development is to
direct the individuals towards achievement of their short-term and long-term goals. Become a better
learner. PDP allows individuals to learn more about themselves, their strengths and weaknesses and how
they can be managed for self-benefit.

14. Outline at least five crucial components of a personal development plan.

Answer:- The five crucial components of a personal development plan are as follow:-
1. Set Your Major and Minor Goals: - When you set a goal, you will set your ultimate goal and then
you will set mini goals that lead up to you achieving your ultimate goal. For example, if your
ultimate goal is to eat a healthier diet, your mini goals will consist of things like reducing your
sugar intake, giving up soda, drinking more water, eating more vegetables and fruits and
significantly reducing your intake of processed foods.
2. Create Your Plan to Execute Your Goals: - Your plan involves what it will take to meet all of your
mini goals so that you can ultimately achieve your primary goal.
3. Work on Your Plan in the Order You Created It: - When you create your plan, you should work on
it according to the structure you have created. Do not jump around or else you might forget
certain steps that are vital to accomplishing each of your mini goals. It is best to create a plan that
consists of numbered steps and number the steps per mini goal.
4. Stick to Your Plan by Giving Yourself Ample Time:-When you are creating your plan, you have to
make sure that you have enough time to complete each step thoroughly. It is best to give yourself
a little wiggle room so that if a step takes more time than you initially anticipated, you do not get
behind on completing it. If you complete a step early, just move onto the next one and get started
early.
5. Achieve Your Ultimate Goal: - Once you achieve your ultimate goal, you can relax a little bit, but
remember that the work does not end. You have to maintain the results that you have
accomplished by following your with your plan. to ensure that you continue to prove why you
deserved this promotion.

15. Explain the concept of behavioural assessment in a workplace context.

Answer: Behavioral assessment is a method used in the field of psychology to observe, describe, explain,
predict and sometimes correct behavior. Behavioral assessment can be useful in clinical, educational and
corporate settings. Behavioral assessment is used to observe, describe, explain and predict behavior. The
underlying principle of behavioral assessment is that past behavior is a valid predictor of future behavior.
The scope of behavioral assessments extends from low fidelity simulations in the form of Situational
Judgment Tests where Participants provide a multiple choice response indicating the effectiveness of
specified actions, to high fidelity simulations in the form of assessment Centre exercises, to on-the-job
assessments such as 360 degree feedback questionnaires.

16. Discuss, in a paragraph, the advantages of behavioural assessments and appraisals.

Answer: Behavioral assessment allows us to look at how an individual goes about their work and achieves
their objectives. Two people may both achieve their objectives, but one may have used more positive
behaviors than the other. The most beneficial employees for an organization will achieve their objectives
with positive behaviors, so behavioral assessment is a useful tool. The variety and flexibility of behavioral
assessment methods means they can be used alone or in conjunction with other measures, such as ability
and personality tests, to create an overall picture of an individual. Some of the specific benefits of
behavioral assessment are described as predictive validity, or the extent to which performance in the
assessment predicts performance in a given job. Another benefit of behavioral assessment is that

candidates can clearly see the link between the assessment and the job for which they are being evaluated
etc.

17. Explain five learning styles and why it is important to identify learning styles.

Answer: It is very important to identify learning style our learning styles have more influence than you may
realize. Your preferred styles guide the way you learn. They also change the way you internally represent
experiences, the way you recall information, and even the words you choose. The five important learning
styles are:-

 Visual: You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding.

 Aural: You prefer using sound and music.
 Verbal: You prefer using words, both in speech and writing.
 Physical: You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch.
 Logical: You prefer using logic, reasoning and systems.

Consider what your work goals for 12 months would be if you were in that position. One of the work goals
should be in relation to your own professional development.

You will need to share this information with your assessor at a meeting so make notes if you wish.

Your goals must be SMART goals, so that your achievement of the goals can be measured. You will use
these notes when you meet with your assessor.

these goals are relevant to the company’s strategic goals and plans, as well as to the job role
and how these are suitable goals for a 12-month period.

5. During the meeting, you will need to demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication
skills including:
 Responding to questions about personal work goals
 Asking questions to seek feedback about your personal work goals.
