QUESTION 1 : RC COLUMN DESIGN [10]

BSCN602
Version 1.0 01 July 2019 Page 2 of 5

Design suitable reinforcement for a column supporting an axial nominal dead load of 300kN (inclusive of
self-weight and an axial imposed load of 600kN. Use 30 MPa concrete and high yield reinforcement. The
column measures 350mm x 350mm.

QUESTION 2 : RC T- BEAM DESIGN [30]

Design suitable reinforcements for a simply supported beam spanning 6m and a nominal imposed load
of 10kN/m. The beam has an overall depth of 400, 250mm wide and an 80mm deep flange and 300mm
wide. Use mild exposure and a 1hr fire resistance in your design. Assume 10mm mild steel stirrups and use
high yield reinforcement for your main bars. Take grade of concrete as 30/19.

QUESTION 3 : RC – SLAB DESIGN [30]

A 4m x 5m reinforced concrete slab is 170mm thick and is simply supported with nominal end restraint
by a 230mm masonry load bearing walls. A 100mm concrete wall, 2.7m high is placed in the middle of
the slab, and will be considered as a dead load across the span and 4m long as shown in Figure 1. Take
the density of the concrete wall as 2200kg/m3 and that of the slab as 2400kg/m3. Take exposure condition
as mild and a 1hr fire resistance. Determine the following:

3.1 The nominal dead load per meter width of wall (1)

3.2 The Nominal dead load per meter width of slab (1)
3.3 The Ultimate design load on the slab if a live load of 5.5kN/m2 is used. (2)

3.4 Design suitable reinforcements and perform all necessary checks. (26)

QUESTION 4 : ECENTRIC BOLTED CONNECTION [30]

4.1 Determine a suitable diameter of grade 8.8 bolts for the eccentric connection comprising a 12mm
grade 300W steel plate bolted to two 100 x 100 x 15 equal angles( grade 300W) as shown in Figure
2. The plate will carry and ultimate load of 140kN applied at an eccentricity to the centroid of the
bolt group of 375mm (15)

4.2 Check the eccentric connection shown in Figure 3 which comprises a corbel manufactured from
12mm plates bolted with 10 x M24 grade 4.8 bolts to the flange of a 305 x 165 x 46 UB. The point

load consist of a nominal dead load of 60kN and a nominal Live load of 80kN. All steel is grade
300W. (15)
