1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this work instruction is to establish ferrite content in
weldments and clad layers of austenitic and duplex stainless steels.
2.0 SCOPE
This instruction sets forth the minimum requirements to be observed for
ferrite measurement by using FERITSCOPE MP30. This equipment is
suitable for ferrite content measurement in weld metal and clad layers of
austenitic and duplex stainless steels.
3.0 REFERENCES
The following documents are referred in this Procedure

equipment to measure the delta ferrite content of austenitic and duplex

Shop and Field Erection.
Project Specification 127 29700-285-0020, Rev AO, for Nondestructive
Examination of Pipe Fabrication Welds.
4.0 TEST PRINCIPLE
The equipment uses the magnetic induction test method whereby the
ferrite content shall be obtained from the magnetic permeability.
5.0 DEFINITIONS
5.1 Unit of measurement
Unit used for measurement display. In ferrite content measurement,
the common units of measurement are point count ferrite (Fe %) or
ferrite numbers (FN).
5.2 Measuring object
The measurements are performed on objects to determine the ferrite
content.
5.3 Calibration standards (ferrite standards)
Objects with the same attributes as the measuring object with
known ferrite contents. The ferrite content of the calibration
standards shall be measured with an extremely accurate test
method.

5.4 Calibration standard set

The calibration standard set used for the calibration of the
FERITSCOPE MP30 consists of a base and three calibration
standards of different known ferrite contents.
5.5 Normalisa tion
Adjustments of the measuring equipment to a new zero value.
6.0 EQUIPMENT
The equipment used to measure the ferrite content is FERITSCOPE MP30
which shall give digital, read out of the value either in % Fe or FN.
7.0 SURFACE PREPARATION
The object on which the ferrite content to be measured shall be cleaned
using solvent cleaner to remove grease, dirt etc. There shall be no item or
the like near the object, which shall interfere with the magnetic
characteristics of the equipment.
8.0 CALIBRATION
Before start of the shift and actual measurement on the object, switch on
the equipment and the normalisation and calibration shall be performed
using the base and the calibration standards set as per the equipment
operations manual. Every time when the Ferritoscope is restarted accuracy
of the test equipment is checked against a known standard reference
sample.
9.0 METHOD
9.1 The probe shall be placed vertically on the surface of the measuring
object to perform the measurement.
9.2 The measurement shall be performed within the reference area.
9.3 On observation of reading as it appears in the display, the probe can
be shifted to next area of interest as required.
9.4 The probe shall be lifted at least 50mm (2") from the measuring
object between readings.
10.0 MEASUREMENT FACTORS
The following factors affect the ferrite content measurement with the
FERITSCOPE MP30 equipment.
a) Curvature of the measuring object
b) Thickness of the measuring object
c) Layer thickness
d) Distance of the measuring position to the edge.

11.0 CORRECTION FACTOR

The effect of these factors shall be corrected by multiplying the measured
ferrite content with the corresponding correction factors. The attached
sheets from the Equipment operation manual describes in detail the
situations, which warrants the application of correction factors.
12.0 REPORTING
An average of three to five readings shall be reported as % Fe or FN in
Olayan DesconjClient Approved format for that particular reference object.
A sample report format attached with this Procedure. The completed report
will be forwarded to Olayan Descon for their review and approval.
