Gulika, which is also known as Mandi is the son of Planet Saturn. Though it is a sub-planet
it has great influence in a horoscope. Gulika is said to be SARVA HANTHARE (destroyer
of all).
Generally speaking only astrologers from Kerala (southern state of India) calculate the
position of Gulika in a Horoscope. Some say it is due to that reason predictions of Kerala
astrologers are more accurate. People from other states visit Kerala only to get astrological
consultation.
Gulika is the most malefic among the sub-planet, especially when it is associated with
Saturn. If Gulika is combined with a benefic planet, that planet will lose its good qualities
and if Gulika is combined with a malefic planet, that planet's bad qualities will increase two
fold. It will also affect the house in which it occupies and the lord of the house also. But
however if it occupies 11th house, it is said to produce good results.
Birth of Gulika
During Tretha Yuga when lanka was ruled by Ravan, he ordered all the planets to sit in the
11th house (the most auspicious house) of his son - Indrajith when he was about to be
born. Fearing Ravan all the planet sat in the 11th house but Shani moved to 12th house
(the most inauspicious house) just before he was born and Indrajith had all the other
planets in 11th house except Shani in 12th house. Ravan outraged by this cut Shani's feet
and Gulika is said to be the broken feet of Shani.
(2) Gulika and Maandi reduce the effect of any Planet associated with them up to 100
times and impart the tragic events and Yamaghantaka increases the strength of any Planet
associated with it up to 100 times and it makes the associated Planet giver of sudden
auspicious results such as getting of unexpected job, admission in a very reputed course if
the native is student and there may be many events like that.
(3) According to ancient text on Vedic Jyotish Gulika and Maandi are the sons of Shani
(Saturn) and both of them indicate horror, terror, accidents, setbacks, embezzlements,
conspiracies etc. Yamaghantaka is the son of Brispati (Jupiter) and is supposed to be
the giver of auspicious events.
(4) In my researches in the field of Vedic Jyotish I have found these Upagraha or Sub
Planets have aspects too. Gulika and Maandi have 3rd and 10th aspect in addition to 7th
aspect and Yamaghantka has 5th and 9th aspect in addition to 7th aspect.
(5) The Syasthansh(D60) Devata of Gulika, Maandi and Yamaghantaka should also be
considered to know the event precisely. For example if Gulika or Maandi is ruled by
Shyasthansh malefic Devata such as Mritu or Agani etc then their nature to create the
tragic events enhance in any horoscope and if Yamaghantaka is found to be ruled by an
auspicious Devata like Chanderansh etc then its ability to create auspicious events in any
horoscope enhances.
(6) If Gulika or Maandi in conjunction with a Planet comes under the aspect of a natural
benefic Planet or if they are in good house receiving aspect from the lord of the house
then it removes evil effect likely to be created by Gulika or Maandi. This applies in Rashi
Chart, Chalit Chakra and Divisional Charts too.
