CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Chapter I introduces to the reader what the study is all about. It is composed of five parts: (1)

Background of the study, (2) Statement of the problem, (3) Significance of the study, (4) Definition of

terms, (5) Scope and limitation.

Part One, Background of Study presents clearly all the necessary details of the research study as well

as the aim of the study.

Part Two, Statements of the Problem presents clearly what the problem is all about.

Part Three, Significance of the Study indicates the importance of the study to specified groups which

are target beneficiaries of the findings of the study.

Part Four, Definition of Terms deals with the key terms which are frequently used in this study for

further understanding of the reader.

Part Five, Scope and Delimitation of the Study presents the coverage or boundaries of the research

study.

Background of the Study

According to Acosta-Gómez, et al. (2018), school is a competitive place where people have many

duties and responsibilities. This requires coping abilities to manage academic stress efficiently. Everyone

is exposed to stress at some time in their lives, that uncomfortable situation that affects our sense of well-

being and quality of life. According to the cognitive-transactional model of stress, stress is the dynamic

relationship between an individual and the environment in which a stimulus (whatever it is) disturbs an

individual’s homeostasis, causing him/her to respond to the situation with all available resources. When

this occurs, we evaluate the demand relative to our available resources, and the amount of stress we

experience is governed by the following rule: the more resources we have, the less stress we will

experience.

Many criteria are used to categorize stress, and this leads to many terms for different types of stress.

One of these criteria focuses on the causes of stress, and it generates such terms as marital stress, familial

stress, work-related stress and academic stress. (Acosta-Gómez, et al., 2018)

The Senior High School students encounter different levels of stress and challenges as they take two

step closer to their goal. The level of vary according on how emotionally intelligent an individual is; how

he/she handles stress. With this we will be able to know what is the level of the stress they are having.

This study will focus on determining the academic stress of students. In academics, stress is

unavoidable among students, and it influences students’ performance in all academic activities. It also

leads them to have bad performance in school work. Students experience a lack of concentration. Stress

in senior high school students can affect the ability to concentrate, and there have been studies conducted

that prove that stress interferes with a student's ability to concentrate.

A number of studies have explored a relationship between stress and poor academic performance

(Clark & Rieker, 1986; Linn & Zeppa, 1984; Struthers, Perry & Menec, 2000). Felsten and Wilcox (1992)

found a significant negative correlation between the stress levels of college students and their academic

performance. Similarly, in a study, Blumberg and Flaherty (1985) found an inverse relationship between

self-reported stress level and academic performance. Struthers et al. (2000) also reported that a high level

of academic stress was associated with lower course grades.

well informed for their future studies.

Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to determine the factors of Academic Stress of Senior High School Grade 12 students

of JBLFMU-A. This study was conducted last February 18-22, 2019 through stratified random sampling

selection on grade 12 students of John B Lacson Foundation Maritime University Arevalo. The reason

behind the Academic Stress of the students includes: Academic factors, personal factors, examinations,

and increased of class workload. There have been cases in John B Lacson Foundation Maritime University
