CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Chapter I introduces to the reader what the study is all about. It is composed of five parts: (1)
Background of the study, (2) Statement of the problem, (3) Significance of the study, (4) Definition of
Part One, Background of Study presents clearly all the necessary details of the research study as well
Part Two, Statements of the Problem presents clearly what the problem is all about.
Part Three, Significance of the Study indicates the importance of the study to specified groups which
Part Four, Definition of Terms deals with the key terms which are frequently used in this study for
Part Five, Scope and Delimitation of the Study presents the coverage or boundaries of the research
study.
According to Acosta-Gómez, et al. (2018), school is a competitive place where people have many
duties and responsibilities. This requires coping abilities to manage academic stress efficiently. Everyone
is exposed to stress at some time in their lives, that uncomfortable situation that affects our sense of well-

being and quality of life. According to the cognitive-transactional model of stress, stress is the dynamic
relationship between an individual and the environment in which a stimulus (whatever it is) disturbs an
individual’s homeostasis, causing him/her to respond to the situation with all available resources. When
this occurs, we evaluate the demand relative to our available resources, and the amount of stress we
experience is governed by the following rule: the more resources we have, the less stress we will
experience.
Many criteria are used to categorize stress, and this leads to many terms for different types of stress.

This study aims to determine the factors of Academic Stress of Senior High School Grade 12 students
of JBLFMU-A. This study was conducted last February 18-22, 2019 through stratified random sampling
selection on grade 12 students of John B Lacson Foundation Maritime University Arevalo. The reason
behind the Academic Stress of the students includes: Academic factors, personal factors, examinations,
and increased of class workload. There have been cases in John B Lacson Foundation Maritime University
Arevalo that the students are struggling about their academic performances. The researchers have been
thinking for a better solution in their academic stressors for Grade 12 students of John B Lacson
Foundation Maritime University Arevalo. A set of questionnaire was used to determine the factors
affecting the Academic Stress of Grade 12 students of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University
Arevalo.
