Group Size: Whole group Allotted Time: 45 minutes Grade Level: First
Subject or Topic: Math
STANDARD: (PA Common Core):
● CC.2.1.1.B.3 Use placevalue concepts and properties of operations to add and subtract
within 100.
I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes)
● Students will be able to relate counting groups of 10 to adding and subtracting multiples on 10
II. Instructional Materials
● Whiteboard
● Whiteboard marker
● Connecting cubes
● Workbooks
● Problem solving books
III. Subject Matter/ Content
● Prerequisite skills
○ Place value Tens/ones
○ Count by 10’s to 100
○ Represent numbers in groups of tens
● Key vocabulary
○ Tens: A group of ten ones
● Big idea
○ Ten ones can be viewed as a unit called a ten.
● New Content
○ Adding and subtracting tens
IV. Implementation
● Introduction –
○ How can we count tens?
■ 10,20,30
■ 1 ten, 2 tens, 3 tens
○ Today we are going to work on adding tens together.

7/21/2019 Math lesson 4/9/19 - Google Docs
● Development –
○ Have the problem written on the board
■ Tess has 30 erasers in a jar. She gets 20 more. How many erasers does she
have now?
■ On your whiteboards try and solve this problem?
■ Once they have finished problem, turn and talk to your macaroni or cheese
partner.
■ Peanut butter is going to start and use the sentence starter “I started solving the
problem by….”. After peanut butter has finished explaining how they solved the
problem jelly will answer using one of the sentence starters “I agree with you
because…” or “I disagree with you because…”
■ Once both partners have gotten a chance to talk I should ask “Is it better to use
one strategy over another?”
○ Why might it be easier to add tens blocks rather than add all the erasers?
Turn and talk to your peanut butter or jelly partner. This time Jelly is going to start
saying why they think adding tens blocks is easier. Then peanut butter will say I
agree or disagree because.
○ Let’s go back to our seats and see how Ready math does it. Get out your workbooks and
open to page 130.
■ They wrote the numbers has tens and then added them.
■ What is 30 + 20?
● 50
○ Let’s use connecting cubes to show this problem.
■ Show 2 tens of connecting cubes and ask how many ones do I have?
● 20
■ How many tens is that?
● 2 tens
■ If I add 3 more tens how many tens would I have now?
● 5 tens
■ How many ones is 5 tens?
● 50 ones
■ So 2 tens and 3 tens equals 5 tens or 20 and 30 equals 50.
■ Write this on the board
○ Now we are going to try and solve some independently, get out problem solving book and
rip out page 179
○ Let’s all read the problems together before starting
○ Independently do page 179
● Accommodations/Differentiation
○ (ELL)
■ Model correct responses
● Let’s use connecting cubes to show this problem.
○ Show 2 tens of connecting cubes and ask how many ones do I
have?
■ 20
○ How many tens is that?
■ 2 tens

7/21/2019 Math lesson 4/9/19 - Google Docs
○ If I add 3 more tens how many tens would I have now?
■ 5 tens
○ How many ones is 5 tens?
■ 50 ones
○ So 2 tens and 3 tens equals 5 tens or 20 and 30 equals 50.
■ Simplified Directions
● Get out your workbooks, the book in color that we don’t rip out pages
from.
● Get out your problem solving books, the other math book that we rip out
the pages.
■ Use choral reading
● Independent work is choral read before starting
■ Check for understanding during independent work
■ Language focuses on conveying meaning and vocabulary development by
identifying key vocabulary.
● What does more mean in a word problem? It means adding
● Tens:
○ Show 2 tens of connecting cubes and ask how many ones do I
have?
■ 20
○ How many tens is that?
■ 2 tens
● Assessment/Evaluation plan
○ Formative
■ Teacher observation
○ Summative
■ Lesson quiz on 4/13/19
● E does modified ELL Test
● L will get test read to her and check for understanding
