PART – A
Answer ALL questions 5x2 = 10 M

1. What is turbulent flow?

2. What is burnout point?
3. Define the heat exchanger effectiveness
4. What is radiation shield
5. What is thermal radiation ? How does it differ from the other forms of electromagnetic radiation?

PART – B

Answer any THREE of the following 3x10= 30M

6. A metal plate 0.71 m in height and 1.02 m in width forms the vertical wall of an oven. The
temperature of the plate is maintained at 230C, where as the air outside the oven is at
23C.Assuming the oven to be uninsulated. Compute the convection heat loss from the wall to the
outside air
(OR)
7. Water enters a tube of 30mm diameter at a mean flow velocity of 3 cm/s and
temperature 50°C. Calculate the exit temperature of water if the tube is 2m long and its
wall temperature maintained constant at 90°C
8. Water is boiled at a rate of 30 Kg/h in a copper pan 30 cm in diameter at atmospheric pressure.
Estimate the temperature of the bottom surface of the pan assuming nucleate boiling conditions
and determine the burnout ( Peak) heat flux
(OR)
9. Two identical counter flow type heat exchangers are available water at the rate of 3600 kg/h and
at 30˚C (Cp=4.2 K/kg˚C) is to be heated by cooling an oil (C p=2.1kJ/kg˚C) at 90˚C. The oil flow
rate is 2700kg/h. The heat transfer area in each heat exchanger is 4m 2. The heatexchangers are
connected in series on water side and in paraleel on oil side. The oil flow rate is split in the ratio
of 2:1,i.e.,1800kg/h in the first and 900 kg/h in the second heat exchanger. Water enters the
first heat exchanger at 30˚C.Find the final water and oil exit temperatures. The overall heat
transfer coefficient in each heat exchanger is 300W/m 2˚C

10. Two large parallel planes are 850K and 400 K. Determine the heat exchange per unit
area if
(i). The surfaces are black
(ii). If the hot one has emissivity 0.9 and the cooler one 0.5
(iii). If one shield of emissivity 0.1 is inserted between the planes.
(OR)
11. Explain briefly the following
i) Reflectivity and Tranmissivity
ii) Reciprocity rule and Summation rule
iii) Kirchhoff Law of heat radiation
iv) Wien’s Displacement law
