Lesson Plan #2:

Topic: Math problems using symbols and words in math. Comparing small and large numbers
to add and subtract
Standards: CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.A.1
“Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding
to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions,
e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to
represent the problem.”
Big Idea: I will be able to solve word problems by comparing and using objects that represent
things using addition and subtraction.
Objective: Students will be able to add and subtract using word problem solutions and using
math symbols to find the right answer to the problem.
Lesson Plan: We’re going to go over words that represent adding and subtracting. We’re going
to go over different symbols that we use in addition and subtraction. We’re going to go over
how they are used in story problems and where they would be in math problems. We’re going to
draw the equations and the symbols on the whiteboard to show the students.

and words in math. Comparing small 1st and Shauntanika
and large numbers to add and subtract

CCSS: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of
adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all
positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown
number to represent the problem.

Curricular objective/s: Students will be able to solve addition problems by adding up to or

subtracting smaller numbers. Ex: (10+4 = 10+2+2 and 15-6 = 15-2-2-2)

Curricular assessment: Put a smiley face or unhappy face or Informal thumbs up/down if they
are understanding the lesson and teaching.

I can statement/Target: I will be able to add and subtract smaller and large numbers using
manipulatives, drawings, and blocks.

Materials:

Accommodations:
High: Students that are above average, we will provide the student with three digit addition and
subtraction word problems. The student can help peers if they finish before given time.
On Grade: Students will explain how they solved the math problems. Students will teach peers.
Low: Teacher will go over word problems step by step with students, help students explain
simple addition and subtraction problems. Use visuals.

Procedures:
Students will be reminded at the beginning of the group time to use materials for the day
gently and respectfully and they do not walk away by themselves and to raise your hands when
you have a question to ask. Also to use our talking voices inside the room.

Time Sequence of Lesson Materials

Attention Getter Teacher will write an equation on the white board: White board
2+2+2+2…= 40. What two numbers can represent Marker
the number 40? Students will answer which
number(s) can be used to represent the number 40.

Teaching Today we will learn we can use small numbers to

represent large numbers when adding or
subtracting.
Modeling Teachers will create a 5 by 2 rectangle using Tape
tape.In each box the teacher will say a number such
as 10. “There's 10 in 5 boxes. There are 3 in these
boxes (point or step into the upper boxes). 10 +5 =
15. Vs 3+3+3+3+3=15

Check for “Now it is your turn” Children will put their

Understanding thumbs up or down if they understand or do not
understand. Children will put their thumb side
ways to show they understand part of the lesson.
Students will create their own equation using the
10 box model and teach the class.

Guided Practice Students will roll dice, add and subtract the two Dice
numbers, and record on a worksheet their answers. Worksheet
Pencil

Brain Break Students will play “Simon Says” and they will be
given an opportunity to get a drink or use the
restroom.

Teaching Students will teach the class how to add and White baord
subtract using larger numbers on white board. If
students need help teachers will assist.

To be collected: The students will be given an index card with a smiley

face, a neutral face, and a frowny face to rate their understanding for that
day. On the opposite side of the note card, they will write what they
learned and how they felt.
