Session Title Plastic Pollution: Plastic sa Pagkain

Duration of the 1 hour (But if the discussion is healthy, you may extend the time)
Session
Key Greenpeace ranked the Philippines as the “third-worst polluter into the world’s
Understanding/s oceans” after China and Indonesia in a report released last September 23, 2017.

In the Philippines, a country of 103 million people with high levels of poverty, products
sold in single-use sachets include instant coffee, shampoo, cooking oil, food seasoning
and toothpaste. These low-value disposable sachets usually end up in landfill or as
litter or marine debris. According to Greenpeace, the Philippines contributed 1.88
million tons of “mismanaged plastic waste” each year, with Thailand, Vietnam and
Malaysia also on its list of the world’s biggest ocean plastic polluters. The problem is
expected to worsen as these countries’ growing economies lead to rising incomes and
“exploding demand for consumer products”.

We throw plastic is everywhere. A lot of it ends up in the ocean. Most plastics in the
ocean break up into very small particles. These small plastic bits are called
"microplastics." Other plastics are intentionally designed to be small. They're called
microbeads and are used in many health and beauty products. They pass unchanged
through waterways into the ocean. Aquatic life and birds can mistake microplastics for
food.

Sea salt around the world has been contaminated by plastic pollution, adding to
experts’ fears that microplastics are becoming found everywhere in the environment
and finding their way into the food chain via the salt in our diets.

Session Objectives At the end of the session, the students are expected to:

1. share their thoughts on the importance of salt in our daily lives;

2. react to the video presentation on the presence of plastic in sea salt;
3. make a personal plan on how to reduce the use of plastics;
4. create a video clip on the existence and solution of plastic pollution in school; and
5. commit to contribute to the success of the class’ learning and to the achievement
of the school.
Resources Chalk board, chalks, manila papers, markers, masking tapes
Video clip on the report of the presence of plastic in sea salt
Activity cum Ask students the following questions:
Analysis (30 mins.)

2. Can you name the different uses of salt?

 The teacher may ask the students to write their answers in a meta strips or on

 What if the salt that we are using is contaminated with plastics?
 Can you still use them?

Allow the students watch the following video clip:

4. Do you think you contribute to this PROBLEM? How?
5. Is there a SOLUTION to this problem? What are they?

Application 1 Group the students into 5 members, using their cellphones/ smartphones, let them
create a 2-minute video clip about “Plastic Pollution in the School” and “What can they
do about them?” The teacher decides the deadline for their video clip.
Application 2 The teacher together with the students will conduct the clean and green activities in
the school. (See schedule)
