INTRODUCTION

Degree and skills are two sides of the same coin. To

succeed in the race of life, a person needs to have a
degree along with the skills. A degree without the skill
would be as empty as the skill without the degree.
Both need to go hand-in-hand in order to be the
survival of the fittest. Degree is nothing but the
certified documentation of the skill within the
individual. Every person having the skill may not
manage to attain the degree. Similarly, every degree
holder is not necessarily skilled. The requirement of
the degree or skill depends upon the organization, the
nature of post etc. On a general outlook, which
criteria carries more weightage – the degree or the
skill?

DEGREE

Degree is an authenticated certificate that the person

applying for the post is having the knowledge of the work
required and has the ability to manage the functioning and
justify the post.
Degree makes a person more confident in his approach and
outlook. These things are an essential part of the
personality development.
Degree can make a person more polite, humble and wiser.
This could be in order to take charge of the job or to climb
the success ladder. But these things are difficult to manage
without a degree in hand.
A degree earns respect and social reputation. A person is
assessed through his Qualifications which is reflected by his
degree.
Degree earns money and status for its master. The more
specialized the degree, the higher the post and status,
higher the salary package.

Comparision

In India, we place too much emphasis on what is often just

a piece of paper, instead of the knowledge.
A degree is the normal study route. There are numerous
careers and fields of work that require advanced
knowledge and training.
However, many of the time students may not take
advanced courses and prefer to develop skills that do not
necessarily require the rigour of a degree curriculum. In
other words, every person with skills may not receive a
degree, as an example we can consider small and large
businesses such as parlor, medium scale industries, shops
and also sports. Similarly, there are many graduates who
have theoretical knowledge but no practical experience. A
number of jobs and careers require various skills -for
example, in the computer and IT sector.
So, without worrying if it is a degree or not, many students
can study a course that would help them to find work.
The government's skill development program is attempting
to change student’s attitude towards skills that can earn
them jobs. However, their needs to be greater synergy
between prospective employers and the skills training
center so that students are well-placed with salaries that
can attract other youngsters. Also, often, employers ask for
a degree irrespective of how adequately trained such a
candidate may be. Therefore, students prefer to pursue a
degree without a job in sight, rather than skill themselves
through training that can better provide a job. The solution
is to analyze what a student is made for -a degree or a skill-
based program and which one would work best for
him/her.
When students decide on a career path, it is essential for
them to understand the importance of a degree and how it
contributes to their future. A degree programme makes a
student's 'generalized' approach more focused. At the
college level, applicants pick a stream and then study a
specific field such as engineering, medicine, commerce,
science, humanities, law, architecture, etc. The student
learns about things ranging from the finer points of a
particular discipline to communication and people skills.
Students must opt for a degree course since it trains them
to understand -through guest lectures, industry visits, etc -
how industry functions. They, thus, know what employers
expect. They develop a world view of the field they would
work in, explore it in-depth and be ready to face challenges
in their professional lives.

Skills
Every degree holder is not necessarily skilled. It is the skill
that helps to achieve the target and not the degree. Skill is
an abstract term which cannot be evaluated on the basis of
papers. It is a broad spectrum which is groomed within the
individual and nurtured through the repeated practical
implications in life. It is not the degree but the skill that
achieves success. A degree can just earn the job, but it
cannot help to grow further without the skill.
It is skill which attracts the employers, clients and
management which lifts or drops the person. Without the
skill, the person would not be able to catch hold the
interest of their superiors and attain success.
The great people from the history were all skilled people,
but they do not had the certifications for their knowledge,
still their work was appreciated and accepted at that time.
That time also there were doctors who delivered the
babies, they use to have the proper medicines for each and
every problem and health related issues. When there was
no role of degree that time also people used to live for like
80-90 years. So degree is just the part of checking your
qualifications, degrees are not whole lot sufficient. On the
other hand Skills are something you inbuilt in yourself may
be with the help of others and may not.
Importance and limitations

Degree
The conflict with education comes into play as one entity
insists their mode of education is superior to another. For
example, students are indoctrinated from elementary
grades to believe that a college degree is the only, or at
least the superior, prosperous route to success. The
messages are sent and received as high school students
flock to colleges each year. Self-education, skills training,
and work experience cost much less and are usually more
emotionally and mentally rewarding. While there are some
jobs in which a college degree is absolutely necessary
(doctor, engineer, scientist) there are others where self-
education and skills training will open doors into the
desired field.
The venue one utilizes to enter a career field must be a
personal decision and must be based on what is best for
each individual.
 It helps individual in getting jobs in different fields for
several profiles.
 As students remain in same atmosphere for a longer
period of time during the completion of degree they
develop a mindset (eg: a student pursuing
management course and an Engineering will always
have different mindset for different situation.)
 Individual with a college degree are less likely to face
unemployment.
 Earning a college degree can have better carrier
opportunities.
 S college degree is helpful for many practical reasons,
ranging from your increased competitiveness to the
increased likeliness that you’ll be promoted within
your job. However, people underestimate the degree
of personal growth that they’ll experience as they’re
working through their degree. A college education
requires students to overcome all types of adversity
and prepares them not only for the workplace, but for
dealing with many problems.
 The answer is much more than they might think.
Earning your bachelor's degree is important because it
will help you to earn more money..... When it comes to
one's quality of life, those who have a bachelor's
degree tend to fare better than those without one.
First, college graduates tend to value healthier
lifestyles, life’s challenges.

College graduates make more money, they are more

successful in personal lives, and they are more influential
in their world. However, this is not always the case.
BUT here are some points which lacks the importance of
degree as a WHOLE
 Student loan debt: It’s got plenty of people worried
including students, graduates, parents, employers, and
politicians alike. Well, it is not to be understated to say
the least; in fact, it is the second leading form of debt
in the United States behind mortgage debt".
Even if a college graduate lands a high paying job, many
have 6 figure student loan debt and will spend years paying
that debt off instead of accumulating wealth. It is becoming
evident that skills are more important than degree.
College graduates apply for jobs, employers
overwhelmingly look for work experience rather than
college degrees.
 Time consuming: As if we talk about a bachelor
degree or even a master’s degree any of the degree
takes at least minimum of 2 years and maximum of 5-
6 years. So other than monetary terms, degree can be
pursued or achieved when you are ready for investing
your years. Yes, education has its own importance but
at what extent.
We agree, degree or education plays vital role
in our life but what if your skills are more powerful
than your degree. What about sports? Yes, B.ped
exists but that is not necessary. For instance we can
talk about Sachin Tendulkar. He was a school dropout
but he have the skills because of which he is a
cricketer and has a name, fame and personality.

SKILLS
In a constantly changing environment, having life skills is an
essential part of being able to meet the challenges of
everyday life. The dramatic changes in global economies
over the past five years have been matched with the
transformation in technology and these are all impacting on
education, the workplace and our home life. To cope with
the increasing pace and change of modern life, students
need new life skills such as the ability to deal with stress
and frustration. Today’s students will have many new jobs
over the course of their lives, with associated pressures and
the need for flexibility.
Benefits for the individual
In everyday life, the development of life skills helps
students to: Find new ways of thinking and problem solving
Recognize the impact of their actions and teach them to
take responsibilities for what they do rather than blame
others Build confidence both in spoken skills and for group
collaboration and cooperation Analyze options, make
decisions and understand why they make certain choices
outside the classroom Develops a greater sense of self-
awareness and appreciation for others.

There is constant debate about whether skills or a

university degree is more important in a job search. Some
people argue that skills are more important than a degree;
others say a degree provides something that skills can’t. Is
one more valuable than the other?
 Tara Bagley, Director of the Global Banking & Asset
Management division of Page Executive's Banking &
Financial Services practice, says that, job adverts will
often ask that applicants be graduates or of ‘graduate
calibre’. Even at a more experienced level, employers
often want to look at a candidate’s degree and grades
to see what it may tell them about the person’s ability
to win a place, commit to a period of learning, see it
through and achieve good results.
 Employers shouldn’t be too prescriptive about whether
applicants must have a degree. Some people want to
start their career straight after school instead of going
to university and as tertiary education gets more
expensive, many school leavers might be put off the
idea of accumulating debt.
 Spending three or more years in education may be
expensive and is not necessarily the key to a promising
career but it can provide a great deal more than just an
academic qualification; the overall experience is also
very valuable. The extra maturity you will have on
entering the workplace after three more years of study
is a positive factor when starting a career. Being a
student also means three more years to figure out
what you want to do with your career.
 Many people wonder if it's possible to be successful in
the same career field without a degree -- and some
have taken their own paths to achievement. But the
truthful answer to the larger question shouldn't come
as a surprise: No other platform is quite as equipped as
collegiate programs when it comes to providing a
wealth of valuable experiences in one package. Read
on to discover why.
 Recent graduates understandably are frustrated by the
fact they're likely to start at a wage lower than the
nation's medium income. However, people also are
aware that if they want to break into the middle class
or higher, they'll need not only experience but a
degree as well. Leadership, management, research and
other desired positions do require university degrees.

Role of indian educations system

Education in India is provided by public schools (controlled
and funded by three levels: central, state and local) and
private schools. Under various articles of the Indian
Constitution, free and compulsory education is provided as
a fundamental right to children between the ages of 6 and
14. The approximate ratio of public schools to private
schools in India is 7:5.
India's improved education system is often cited as one of
the main contributors to its economic development.
Although there are private schools in India, they are highly
regulated in terms of what they can teach, in what form
they can operate (must be a non-profit to run any
accredited educational institution) and all other aspects of
operation. Hence, the differentiation of government
schools and private schools can be misleading.
Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the
acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits.
Educational methods include storytelling, discussion,
teaching, training, and directed research.

Skills speaks louder than degree debates

Choose a path you love’, ‘follow your heart’ – these are the
most hackneyed lines, which have been repeated so many
times that they have lost their relevance. While students
are always advised to do what they love the most, it
changes as soon as they grow up and have to make choices.
Not many youngsters including their parents muster the
courage to do what they love. Indian youngsters rarely
think beyond acquiring a degree that makes them
employable.
In today’s world, multiple qualifications sometimes do not
fetch you a dream job, but skill-based courses can.
However, the dilemma over skills versus degrees happens
all over the world. This is because there is a huge risk
involved in making life-changing decisions about the career.
Even if a person has a strong belief in one’s abilities, it is
not easy to convert the passion into a career choice. We
come across many engineers passionate about music, who
nurture an angst in their heart all their life for not being
able to take the right decision at the right time.
Lately, however, we have seen a growing trend among the
youngsters, who decide to choose vocations that utilise
their existing skills instead of the degrees with which they
walk out of academic institutions. But this has been
brought about by the increasing number of alternatives and
available information over the internet, opening up
avenues for people with talent in various skills to build an
audience or a target customer base. From digital marketing
to cooking, acting to event planning, there is an
appreciation of high-level skill set in any profession.
