Working Topic or Title Factors Affecting the Reading Competency Level of Grade 11
Senior High School Learners in the Small Secondary Public
Schools of San Fernando, La Union
Problem
Purpose of the Study Reading has always been one of the most essential skills in
the English language learning. However, in City of San
Fernando, the researcher found out that some students are
lack the necessary proficiency in reading as revealed in their
low percentage in the National Career Assessment
Examination last school year. The researcher believed that
the students are not that motivated to read. Reading has a lot
of benefits to our learners like improves our imagination,
vocabulary and language skills. Remedial Reading and Most
Functional Reading Corners are some of the Projects in our
Division. The researcher got interested in the status of
teaching English in order to improve the reading competency
of the learners in the Small Secondary Public Schools.

Statement of the Problem This study is conducted to investigate factors affecting the
Reading Competency Level of Grade 11 Senior High School
Learners in the Small Secondary Public Schools of the City
of San Fernando, La Union
Specifically, it sought to answer the following
questions:
1. What are factors affecting the reading competency
level of the learners?

2. What are the different reading materials do the


learners have in their homes?

3. How frequent do the teachers give reading


remediation to the learners?

4. How effective are the methods of strategies used by


the teachers in letting the learners read stories or
selections?

5. How qualified are the teachers in teaching Reading in


the Senior High School in the City Schools Division of
San Fernando?

6. What are the assistance given by the school heads to


address the said problem?

7. What are the problems encountered by the teachers


in teaching Reading?

8. Is there a significant difference between the teaching


strategies of the teachers and the learning style of the
learners?

9. What are the remedies of the teachers to improve the


performance of the learners?

10. How adequate is the use of instructional facilities in


teaching Reading?

11. What are the implications of the findings to the


teachers?

Methodology
Research Design The descriptive method of investigation will be used in this
study. Descriptive research according to Best as cited by
Dandoy (2008) describes what it is. It involves recording,
description, analysis and interpretation of conditions that
exists. This study will look into the status of Reading
Competency Level of Grade 11 Senior High School Learners
in the City Schools Division of San Fernando.
Setting City of San Fernando Division
Population The Grade 11 Senior High School Learners and Teachers of
English from the City of San Fernando, La Union
Sample Sampling Design Normative Sampling. This is concerned with looking into the
commonality of some elements
Data Gathering Tool The instrument that will be used is the questionnaire.
Data Gathering The questionnaires will be prepared by the researcher after
Procedure reading and studying samples of questionnaire from related
studies. The researcher will also consult knowledgeable
persons on how to prepare one.
Data Analysis Plan Statistical tools will be used and the questionnaires will be
validated well.
Ethical Consideration Honesty and Confidentiality
Plans for Dissemination The questionnaires will be distributed personally by the
researcher to the respondents. After a few days, all copies
distributed will be retrieved personally by the researcher.

Working Topic or Title The Roles and the Impacts of Campus Journalism to the
Learners in the Small Secondary Public Schools of the City
of San Fernando, La Union
Problem
Purpose of the Study Campus Journalism helps shape public opinion by providing
relevant information. Aside from keeping the student body up
to date with relevant issues, the campus press plays a huge
role in preserving freedom of speech and expression. However,
in Secondary Public Schools in City of San Fernando, the
researcher found out that some learners do not actively
involve themselves when it comes to Campus Journalism.
Those who are joining the said activity have only the ideas
about it. The researcher got interested in the status of the
Small Secondary Public Schools in the division when it comes
to Campus Journalism.

Statement of the Problem This study is conducted to investigate The Roles and the
Effects of Campus Journalism to the Learners in the Small
Secondary Public Schools of the City of San Fernando, La
Union
Specifically, it sought to answer the following
questions:
1. What are the problems encountered in making
articles in Campus Journalism?
2. How do the school paper advisers determine their
writers?
3. How do your school prepare for Press School
Conferences?
4. How competent do the School Paper Advisers in
handling Campus Journalism in their Schools?
5. How adequate do the writers and also with the SPAs
have their training in one school year?
6. Is there a significant difference the knowledge of the
SPAs and the level of intelligence of the learners?
7. What are the factors affecting the performance of the
school in creating a quality school paper?
8. What are the assistance given by the school head in
addressing the said problem?
9. Why do some of the learners do not like to involve
themselves in the said school activity?
10. What are the implications of the findings to the
schools?

School of Dr. Quintin Balcita Sr. National High School
Problem
Purpose of the Study Grammar helps the learners to become globally competitive to
survive their careers after they graduate from college. It also
helps the learners to become confident in interacting with
other people or in their workplace someday. However, in Dr.
Quintin Balcita Sr. National High School, the researcher
found out that some of the learners have lack of knowledge
and understanding when it comes to the grammar rules. The
researcher got interested in the status of their Competency
Level when it comes to their Grammar.

Statement of the Problem This study is conducted to investigate The English Grammar
Competency Level in the Junior High School of Dr. Quintin
Balcita Sr. National High School.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:


1. What are the problems encountered in discussing
grammar rules?
2. How do the teachers discuss a certain grammar rule?
3. How competent do the teachers handling the
Grammar portion of the English Subject?
4. Is there a significant difference the knowledge of the
teachers and the level of intelligence of the learners?
5. What are the factors affecting the performance of
learners when it comes to grammar rules?
6. What are the assistance given by the school head in
addressing the said problem?
7. Why do some of the learners hesitant to interact
themselves using the grammar rules?
8. What are the implications of the findings to the
