• Milestones
• BNET Support
• The Future
Bisi
• There are many Bisi’s in Agbado, a
peri-urban community in the south-
west part of Nigeria.
• Quality Education is a scarce
commodity in this community; there
is one government funded high
school and two elementary schools.
• There is however an influx of
“second rate private schools” to
cater to a population where it is
estimated that about 60% of the
population live on less than 3 GBP
daily
• It was against this background that I
founded a community-learning hub
in Agbado, south-west Nigeria
Agbado E-Learning Hub
• It commenced as a summer programme
• The simple goal was to
provide access to
learning materials -
books, educational
games and information
technology for children
in order to
• augment their school
work and
• create learning
experiences similar to
that of their
privileged peers .
Support at Inception (2014)
• 6 Weeks online course and Mentorship)

• 5000 CAD seed Grant

• 25 kindles instead of the standard 50 Pieces

Revelation Baptist • Initial location of Pilot Hub
Church, Agbado
Lesson Learned
Kids living in Agbado are not so different
from their privileged peers living in richer
neighborhoods

Perhaps the subtle difference was that whereas

the privileged kids I knew sounded super smart,
were savvy with technology and properly
groomed

However, 6 out of every 10 children who visited the

hub could not operate a laptop or tablet, had never
seen a board game and didn’t have the luxury to own
story books

These subtle disparities have a strong influence on their

learning outcomes as such they were already “seemingly
disadvantaged” from the onset of their lives through no “Should an accident of
fault of theirs birth debar a child from
reaching his/her fullest
potential?”
The Metamorphosis-REEL FOUNDATION
o Knowing that there are several hundreds of Agbado E-Learning Hub
communities similar to Agbado in Nigeria, we
thought that if we could intentionally capture
our learnings and experience with our pilot,
Agbado E-Learning Hub, we could create a
model that can be easily replicated in other
communities similar to Agbado
o REEL Foundation was
birthed as the engine for
Adamo E-Learning Hub
this assignment

o Today , we have
expanded to 3
communities

Focus Areas

ESTABLISH A COMMUNITY E-
REEL Foundation is a registered community focused Non-Profit LEARNING HUB
Organisation that seeks to promote equitable access to quality
learning for children from low income/underserved communities.
IMPLEMENTATION OF
Our goal is to ensure that children irrespective of their socio- COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
economic background have access to quality learning privileges that PROJECTS/PROGRAMMES
will put them at par with peers globally.

It is against this backdrop that we operate along these 3 focus areas:

CSR PROJECT MANAGEMENT
1.0 COMMUNITY E- LEARNING HUBS.
Based on the lessons learned operating the pilot hub, we designed a collaboration
model to enable us scale

• We partner with individuals, CBOs, schools etc. who are passionate about quality
learning in their communities to establish and operate a Community E-Learning
Hub

• REEL provides the operational structure, tested and proven learning tools and
techniques as well as capacity building and access to funding opportunities
available to REEL.

• The partner provides space/facility to host the hub as well as volunteers

• Quality control is maintained via timely reporting and unscheduled visits and
monitoring to ensure the hub adheres to the guidelines in the REEL Operational
guide
2.0 IMPLEMENTATION OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS/PROGRAMMES

are looking for competent and passionate hands to handle
their CSR activities in the Education sector

• When a company engages the services of REEL Foundation

for project management, in addition to realizing its CSR
goals , the company is also indirectly impacting the lives of
the children who benefit from the use of our community
learning hubs

Challenges
• Hostility from some schools in the community

• Participation at the hubs is free, as such some

parents take it for granted and are lackadaisical
about attendance of their wards

• A number of schools have extended curricular and

extra curricular activities after school making it
difficult for children in the community to participate
in the hub activities on Fridays

• Poor roads making accessibility difficult in rainy

season

• Limited Formal training opportunities for REEL staff

and volunteers
THE FUTURE
LEARNERS
The 2018 World Development
Report identifies four proximate
determinants most directly
linked to learning outcomes
SCHOOL
TEACHERS LEARNING INPUTS
• Learner preparation
• Teacher skills and motivation
• Availability of relevant inputs
• School management and
governance that bring these SCHOOL
together MANAGEMENT
• Thus far, we have focused on activities ,
programmes etc. that have been based
solely on learners development

• Whilst this approach has been rewarding ,

we believe that we can achieve wider
impact if we are able to successfully
design and implement a more holistic
programme approach that incorporates
other proximate determinants

• It is against this backdrop that we have

designed a strategic frame work that will
guide our activities over the next 3 years.
3 Year Strategic Plan

“ No one has yet realized the wealth of
sympathy, the kindness and generosity hidden in
the soul of a child. The effort of every true
education should be to unlock that treasure.”
