INTRODUCTION

Formal assessment is when a teacher judges learners’ work through a test

and then gives a formal report or grade to learners to say how successful or
unsuccessful the have been. Formal assessment have data which support the
conclusions made from the test. We usually refer to these types of tests as
standardized measures. These tests have been tried before on students and
have statistics which support the conclusion such as the student is reading
below average for his age. The data is mathematically computed and
summarized. Scores such as percentiles, stains, or standard scores are mostly
commonly given from this type of assessment. Formal assessment is data
driven. It occurs after a learning cycle has ended; it is not immediately
actionable; and it may be designed by others. Examples include exams, written
assignments, such as essays, and other high-stakes activities. Most formal
assessment is summative in nature and thus tends to be highly motivating to
learners. It is, however, also associated with increased stress. Given the role of
formal assessment in decision-making (evaluation/grading), formal assessment
should be held to higher standards of reliability and validity than informal
assessments.

In formal assessment there are some methods which consist of the

strategies, techniques, tools and instruments for collecting information to
determine the extent to which students demonstrate desired learning outcomes.
Several methods should be used to assess student learning outcomes. It also
involves individual and or collaborative tasks that usually attract a mark (group
work may include both an individual and group component).
Writing Skill

Writing is a complex, multifaceted, and purposeful act of communication that

is accomplished in a variety of environments, under various constraints of time,
and with a variety of language resources and technological tools.

Basic writing denotes partial mastery of prerequisite knowledge and skills

that are fundamental for proficient work at a given grade, proficient writing
represents solid academic performance. Students reaching this level have
demonstrated competency over challenging subject matter and advanced
writing represents superior performance.

Expository writing explains or informs constructed logically focused on an

idea, narrative writing focuses on temporal sequencing related events,
descriptive writing deals with perceptions, mainly visual and often employs
spatial constructs, persuasive writing seeks to alter how one thinks or feels
through emotion, argumentative presents both sides of an issue but appeals to
logic, evidence, and reasons for support.

Inside formal assessment there are different types of instrument to apply

such as tests (Standardized tests, pre-tests, and post-tests), research papers,
articles, reports, exams, personal essays, journals, self-evaluations, exams, etc.

Rubrics or scoring guides outline identifies criteria for successfully

completing an assignment and establish levels for meeting the criteria. They
can be used to score everything from essays to performances.
