Proposed Title 1

FACTORS AFFECTING UNDERACHIEVEMENT IN MATHEMATICS OF

GRADE 2 LEARNERS IN AGUILAR DISTRICT

Rationale

Mathematics education is one of the subjects recognized as

a major factor in development, causing national agenda to focus

in this area (Ogena, 2010). The development of mathematical

reasoning is the goal of K -12 Education in US (National

Research Council, 2001) and other countries for it is an

important skills for employment (Ketterlin – Geller, Chard,

Fien, 2008). Performance of schools in all levels, the kind of

teacher quality and its teaching output became a national

priority in addressing the quality of education learners

receive. Evaluation of educational attainment using standardized

high-stakes testing was administered, and the poor result was

unforgiving. Low achievements in many areas are now the concern

for all academic and government institutions (Cave and Brown,

2010). Therefore, revisiting how the way students learned and

the way students’ achievement was performed is an effort

worthwhile to consider.

However, failure to meet the standards of proficiency is a

complex matter to pin point the blame even to the learners.

There are many variables like teacher quality, financial

resources of the school, quality of instruction, and many more

are out of their control (McGuire, 2000).

Research Problems

This study aims to look into the academic performance of

Grade 2 learners in Mathematics in Aguilar District during the

school year 2019-2020.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following:

1.What is the profile of the Grade 2 learners in Aguilar in

terms of:

a. Age

b. Sex

c. Favorite Subject

d. General Weighted Average in Mathematics in Grade 1

2.What is the profile of the parents in terms of parental

involvement in the pupil learning?

3. What are the causes of the underachievement in

Mathematics of the Grade 2 learners?

4. Is there a significant difference between the learners’

academic performance and the parent factor when analyzed

according to parental involvement?

5. Based on the findings, what intervention can be

developed to improve the Grade 2 learners’ academic performance

in Mathematics?

CAUSES OF POOR PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS AMONG GRADE 2 LEARNERS

IN AGUILAR DISTRICT: BASIS FOR INTERVENTION PROGRAM

Rationale

Mathematics education has long been recognized as a major

factor in development, prompting nations to emphasize this in

their national agenda. An alarming observation of Filipino

students reveals that they excel in knowledge acquisition but

fare considerably low in lessons requiring higher order thinking

skills. How students learn and how to measure student

performance in these areas are thus a priority concern of policy

makers and educators worldwide. It cannot be denied that most of

the elementary learners are unprepared for learning mathematics

as revealed in a study by Pateňa (2013).

The low understanding level accompanied by discouraging

achievements of the students in Mathematics has become a cause

of great concern of our country and has bothered badly the

educationists. As cited by Benito in the study of Cabatay et.al

(2011) that performance of Filipino learners in mathematics is

on a downhill as evidenced by the poor standing or results in

National Achievement Test and in the 2015 Trends in

International Science and Mathematics Study. Many students are

considered underachievers in mathematics. They are average or

above average in their intelligence but their actual achievement

in mathematics did not coincide to their intellectual

capabilities. This poor performance of the Filipino learners in

Mathematics can be attributed to several factors. This is what

this proposed study shall look into.

Research Problems

This study aims to look into the causes in the poor

performance in Mathematics among Grade 2 learners in Aguilar

District during the school year 2019-2020.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following:

performance in Mathematics?

3. What strategies should be adopted to improve the

learners’ poor performance in Mathematics?

4. Based on the findings, what intervention can be

developed to improve the Grade 2 learners’ academic performance

in Mathematics?
