 APPLICATION AND PLATFORM AS TEACHER INNOVATION IN TEACHING

SPEAKING SKILL

Abstract
Speaking skill is a communicate ability that become main target of both second language and foreign
language learners. Speaking skill is admitted the most difficult mastered. Therefore, in the teaching
speaking skill, it becomes a concern in the classroom. Teachers have been making serious effort in
improving learners speaking skill. It starts from encouraging students to speak English in the classroom
by engaging them to communicate with English language until become a must in language class. Students
need a innovation in improving this difficult skill that can encourage them to enhance their speaking skill
continuously. The use of application based technology is a right way considering that its development in
21st century is able to give motivation for learners as long as study in the classroom. This paper will
discuss kinds of application that can motivate students in improving their speaking skill especially for
English subject.

1. INTRODUCTION 2. BENEFITS OF APPPLICATION AND

Speaking skill is the difficult skill of other
language skills. Even though teachers have been
applying a rule which students should speak
English in the language subject. But students
often lose motivation and interest in learning.
Students still face a difficulty in improving this
skill. Native language is often spoken in the
classroom. That’s why speaking English is a
concern for teachers. Anyway, speaking English
should be mastered by senior high school
students. They supposed to make English as
second language during English subject than
native language. Nina (1991) states carrying out
conversation is a way to success students ability
in achieving a target language. It means, there
must be habitual of conversation in the language
class so it can rise students learning
enhancement. Therefore, teachers need to find
various innovation for enhancing students.
Technology in 21st pedagogy is more and more
popular of its usage. This way can be a solution
for language teachers. According to Susikaran
(2013), basic changes have come in classes
beside the teaching methods because chalk or
boardmarker and talk teaching method is not
sufficient to effectively teach English.
Application and platform based technology will
be discussed here.
PLATFORM IN TEACHING ENGLISH
Along with time, technology in 21st century
has been primary needs of teachers and students
beside using textbook. One of popular ways in
the pedagogy world now is using application on
website, android and IOS as a learning device in
the classroom. It will help learning process of
students and give interesting features inside. It’ll
also give students a break from the traditional
classroom, all while still reinforcing the skills
they are learning. Quoted from tescomobile.com,
using application is able to stimulate the students
mind. The features inside will support learning
curriculum and extra material. Application and
platform are also easy to be used and can be
accesed through internet connection and even
though without internet connection. With this
innovation, students will still be encouraged to
learn English.
3. THE ROLE OF APPLICATION IN
SUPPORTING SPEAKING SKILL
PROCESS IN THE CLASSROOM
All teachers and students need are powerful
English speaking application to learn perfect
pronunciation, natural rhythms and everything
else to talk confidently. Besides of that,
combined with other English learning strategies,
powerful application can learn how to speak
fluently English. According to Susanti (2017),
the application excellence to motivate students is
the application that contain of English
expressions, vocabulary and also grammar.
4. KINDS OF APPLICATION AND
PLATFORM TO TEACH SPEAKING
SKILL STUDENTS LEVEL
While there are a lot of applications available
at the app store, google play or website,
choosing the right one for the students can
change the way they look at the process of
learning. Educational apps are making things
easier for students to understand. Books are
often found to be tiring and boring for students
while replacing them with colourful pages and
moving animations can make learning fun to the
core. The following are application and platform
which are used in the classroom:
a. Google Translate
Google Translate is definitely an
application that anyone learning or
teaching English should have on their
phone. This application can translate
dozens of languages into English, and it
can be used in all types of activities.
Based on of the application description
box in google play, there is a voice
feture that can detect people voice and it
will be appear words we have spoken. If
the words spoken is wrong, the words
will not be appeared.. Translate google
is simple application has been
downloaded by students in various level
education and been applied by millions
of people.
5. CONCLUSION
b. Vocaroo
Vocaroo is a simple web-based learning
tool for recording audio in a web
browser. Based on the application
review by Anthony, users can record
using a traditional buttons or upload.
But it can just product an audio with
max size 50 MB with duration 2-3
minutes only.When a user completes
their recording they can save it, share it

document, or post to a variety of social
media outlets. Teachers can use this
platform when they will held speaking
test.
c. TalkEnglish
Based on the description box in the
google play, TalkEnglish provides
catagories lesson feature can help
teachers to provide speaking topic.
Other than that, the application contains
quiez feature as practice before you go
to the lesson catagories feature. It will
help the students understanding.
d. SpeakingPal English Tutor
An interactive application, SpeakingPal
offers exercises, dialog with a virtual
character, role-playing, and a series of
mini lessons. It comes with speech and
language recognition and provides
instant feedback to students. The
application works on IOS and Android
and is available on App Store and
Google Play.1
e. ELSA
Sometimes, students get difficulty in
listening what their teacher tells. It is
usually caused by their teacher accents
is not exactly same with a native speaker
or foreinger. ELSA is an application can
give the correct pronounciation. It starts
teaching you specific syllables and
sounds that you’re having trouble with.
The program was designed by experts in
communication and speech coaching.2
On the whole, technology should be
main ways for language learning
achievement consider that students are in 21st
century pedagogy. One of technology is
application and platform as teacher
innovation to change traditional English class
to be modern learning. In addition, all
students have been using mobile phone. It
supposed to be utilized as their own facility
than it is used for sending message, calling
 friends or even looking for someone pictures
in instagram. For this case, teachers do not
need to make a rules to not bring and use
smart phone in the classroom.
