Praxis Analysis
Casey Garrett
The Praxis one is a very important test that all future educators must pass to continue
with their education. With a passing score on all three areas of the exam the next step of entering
an education bachelors' program and the option to begin substituting now opens. This passing
score is required because the test asses the knowledge of the common core subjects that will be
the basis of what I will one day teach. The minimum scores that are considered a pass are as
follows reading needs a 156, math a 150 and writing requires a 162.
In preparation for the exams, I used a multitude of different study techniques. For each
test I started by printing out the study companion to read through and highlight anything that I
didn’t understand, vocabulary I wanted to define and anything that I felt my knowledge of could
use improvement. Most of this information I found on the page with the breakdown of each
section that was going to be on the test. After reading through it I took handwritten notes and
made flashcards of everything I had highlighted. Each morning and each night I read through my
notes and went over the flashcards making sure to look up examples of anything that I was still
struggling with.
My exam results varied and are nowhere near what I want to receive but with the faster
pace of this course, my normal study time was cut very short. I know with more time and
practice I will be able to receive the scores I am aiming for. On the reading exam overall, I got a

62% which is considered a needs improvement. In all honesty, I felt that I needed to focus my
time preparing for writing and math since reading comprehension has always been my strong
point. My assumption of that was correct as I scored 86% in that area but unfortunately, my
skills in the other two sections need to be revisited to refresh my memory. On the writing portion
of the exam, I got a 65% which is also a needs improvement. While I did focus on studying for
this more than the other two it seems I still have a lot of information I need to understand better.
The math portion I did about what I expected since it has always been my weaker subject. I also
didn’t give myself enough time to fully dive into the studying leading me to receive a 55% which
is improvement needed.
To better prepare myself for the actual test I am going to do numerous things. I plan on
taking each test separately and with two weeks in between each. Allowing me to give my
undivided attention to fully preparing for each subject. In preparation for the reading praxis, I am
going to go over the basic principles of structure and craft as well as defining key terms. For
writing, my main area is lacking in understanding the uses of certain punctuations and some
academy and watch videos as well as participate in some of the helpful worksheets they offer as
well as take my practice essays into the writing center to get them looked over. For math, since it
is my worst score, I am thinking about getting a tutor as well as popping into the math resource
center a few times a week while I prepare. I am also planning on using my math for educator's
textbook to read over the math concepts that still have me a bit confused.
