BA Degree in

The BA in Social Sciences is a 3 year degree offered in the English medium. This degree
offers you the opportunity to obtain a mul�-disciplinary social science training. Students
who register for the BA can choose from the following areas of focus:
1. Communica�on Studies
2. Economics and Development Studies
Advanced Certificate in 3. Poli�cs and Interna�onal Studies
4. Society and Culture Studies

Entry Requirements
This programme will give you direct entry to the BA degree in Social Sciences. This will also 01. a minimum of three passes at the General Cer�ficate of Educa�on (Advanced

Dura�on : One (01) / Two (02) Years depending on the level of entry.
Academic Ac�vi�es
Will be conducted at Colombo, Kandy, Matara, Ba�caloa, Jaffna, Anuradapura, Kurunagala,
Rathnapura and Badulla Regional Centres; and at Ampara, Bandarawela, Ha�on,
Killinochci, Vavuniya, Mannar and Pu�lam Study Centres.
BA Degree in
Youth and Community Development
The BA in Youth and Community Development is of three years dura�on. It provides the
theore�cal knowledge and professional competencies related to the broad field of youth
and community work.
Comple�on of this degree will be helpful in obtaining employment opportuni�es in a host of
local and interna�onal organiza�ons, and in seeking occupa�onal recogni�on from related
professional ins�tu�ons.
Students can obtain a Diploma in Youth and Community Development a�er successful
comple�on of Level 3.
Entry requirements
01. Three (3) passes at the G.C.E (A/L) in any subject stream, OR
02. Comple�on of 30 course credits at Level 2 or above from any programme
offered by an approved Higher Educa�on Ins�tu�on OR
Will be conducted at Colombo, Kandy, Matara, Ba�caloa, Jaffna, Anuradapura, Kurunagala,
Rathnapura and Badulla Regional Centres; and at Ha�on, Vavuniya, Pu�alam, Gampaha,
Ampara, Mannar, and Kaluthara Study Centres.
MA Degree in
Development Studies and Public Policy
MA Degree is offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka in collabora�on with the Marga
Ins�tute to upli� standards in educa�on and research in Development and Policy Studies
through integra�ve social sciences. This programme will enable to build skills and
competencies of graduates in different academic disciplines to work in the development
sector na�onally and interna�onally.
Entry Requirements
01. A degree from a recognized university with at least one year of work
experience in the fields of planning administra�on and implementa�on of
development projects. OR
02. Secured an equivalent or higher qualifica�on acceptable to the Senate of the
Open University of Sri Lanka with at least one year of work experience
preferably in the fields of planning, administra�on and implementa�on of
development projects.
AND
03. Selec�on through an interview conducted by the Department of Social Studies
whenever the need arises.
Language Pre-requisites for Admission

03. Comple�on of NVQ Level 4 or accredited work experience equivalent to (a) A full English medium degree from a UGC recognized ins�tu�on, OR
NVQ Level 4
OR (b) IELTS with a minimum overall score of 6.5 or TOEFL (paper-based scores between 500 and 550)
or (internet-based scores between 61 and 79).
04. An equivalent or higher qualifica�on acceptable to the Senate of the Open
University of Sri Lanka.
