Lesson Idea Name: Non-fiction informative writing
Content Area: Language Arts
Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE2W2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they
introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.

Technology Standard Addressed: 6. Creative Communicator

d. students publish or present content that customizes the message and medium for their intended
audiences.

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: KidPub.com

URL(s) to support the lesson: https://www.kidpub.com/

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing
Opportunity in your classroom: In this language arts lesson, the students will begin by choosing a
non-fiction book of their choice and reading level, and write a paragraph explaining the book they
read. The paragraph must include: a topic sentence, three supporting facts, and a conclusion sentence.
The paragraph should include a minimum of five sentences. I will incorporate an online publishing
opportunity (KidpPub) where students will be able to publish their final product as well as
edit/comment on their classmates.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a

classroom? Classroom computer, laptop, or ipad

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them
may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a.   Collaboration  with  peers,  near-‐peers,  mentors  outside  their  classroom  and  often  beyond  their
school:  This  lesson  gives  students  the  opportunity  to  view  each  other’s  work  and  provide  feedback  in
the  comment  section.  Students  will  read  each  other’s  work  and  learn  new  information  while  reading
through  the  paragraphs.  Students  and  mentors  outside  of  the  classroom  can  also  view  the  public  post.

b.   Student-‐centered  learning  and  knowledge  creation  (creating  original  data  and  or  producing  original
products  as  a  result  of  engaging  in  a  project):  For  this  activity  each  student  is  writing  their  own  original
product  about  a  non-‐fiction  book  of  their  choice.  Students  are  reading  the  book  to  themselves  and
choosing  the  information  they  want  to  include  in  their  own  writing.  For  this  activity  each  student  is
writing  their  own  original  product  about  a  non-‐fiction  book  of  their  choice.

c.   Higher-‐order  thinking:  This  lesson  encourages  students  to  think  at  a  higher-‐order  thinking  level.
Students  are  instructed  to  go  beyond  just  reading  a  book  and  discussing  it.  Students  are  to  write  their
own  topic  sentence  about  the  book  and  create  three  supporting  sentences  about  the  topic.  Students
are  being  asked  to  recall  three  important  facts  about  the  non-‐fiction  book  they  read.  Students  choose
which  facts  they  consider  important  enough  to  include  in  their  paragraph.

d.   Students  publishing  their  original  work  to  others  who  will  use/care  about  their  product:  In  this
learning  experience,  students  are  to  post  their  informative  paragraphs  (on  KidPub)  about  a  non-‐fiction
book  they  found  interesting.  On  KidPub,  anyone  who  is  interested  in  these  topics  that  the  students
write  about  have  accesses  to  their  original  product  (informative  paragraph);  that  the  students  have
published  on  this  website.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The technology tool I selected for this idea will support all
students. Students are writing their own informative paragraph on the book they choose. Since not all
students are on the same reading level, students will be reading and writing their product based on a
non-fiction book of their reading level. By allowing students to choose their own non-fiction book,
students become more interested and engaged in the lesson. This activity supports and enhances the
learning experience for students in the classroom by engaging the students in independent reading,
allowing them to represent their idea of the non-fiction book through their own writing, and
expressing their ideas for public share.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: Student safety is first priority when
involving public learning tools such as KidPub. Before beginning this lesson, I would get permission
from administration and address any questions or concerns. I would also send out a permission forms
to parents and make sure to have their consent before allowing students to work with this online tool.
I would also guide my students through the lesson and have them use a pseudonym name when
creating a username. It is important for student’s personal information such as full name, email, phone
number, and/or address to stay private. Throughout the lesson I would make sure my students are on
track on and using the website in a positive and appropriate way.

Reflective Practice: The activity I created can impact student learning by introducing an online tool
that can enhance their education. Students are writing this paragraph and inspired that it will be
published online. Students are also welcome to learn and read about informative pieces they didn’t
know before. To further extend this lesson, I could assign students to publish a monthly book review
on at least one book of interest. This will motivate them to read and share their thoughts about the
book, what they liked and found interesting.
