Technical Report ISSUE 1.0 DATE 21 Mar 2012

Calculation of Minimum Line-Up Distance Correction

1. Introduction

Airbus takes the opportunity of the new A350 family introduction to propose an update of the
tables of Minimum Line-up Distance Corrections on Take-Off Distance Available (TODA) and
Accelerate-Stop Distance Available (ASDA) contained in Airbus manuals.

Methodology:
Three classic manoeuvres are considered:
1. 90° turn on runway entry
2. 180° turn on runway turn pad
3. 180° turn on a given runway width

Updated assumptions:
The updated calculations use more realistic and operational assumptions than in previous
version. The major updated assumptions are as follow:

1. Standard runway width sets at 45m (instead of 60m) as defined in ICAO Annex 14.
A runway width of 30m is also considered for A320 family.
Note: recommendations contained in Annex 14 regarding the minimum clearance
between aircraft wheels and taxiway edges are taken into account and should be
met.

2. Effective steering angles for A320 and A321 aircraft now take into account slippage
effect (instead of “no slippage” as previously)

3. Assumptions on thrust and braking application are changed to a more operational

scenario for tight turns i.e. use of asymmetric thrust and differential braking to initiate
the turn only.

4. Standard turnpad geometry as defined in ICAO Annex 14

5. Standard FCOM procedure is applied to compute 180° turn on a given runway width

Results are available below and will be added in the updated Aircraft Characteristic for Airport
Planning (AC) manuals for all the Airbus aircraft.

2. 90° turn on runway entry

This manoeuvre consists in a 90° turn at minimum turn radius starting with the Main Landing Gear
(MLG) edge at a distance M2 from taxiway edge, and finishing with the aircraft aligned on the
centreline of the runway. During the turn, M1 and M2 clearances must meet minimum value as
described in ICAO Annex 14.

3. 180° turn on runway turn pad

This manoeuvre consists in a 180° turn on a standard ICAO runway turn pad geometry. It starts
with MLG edge at a distance M3 from taxiway edge, and it finishes with the aircraft aligned on the
centreline of the runway. During the turn, M1, M2 and M3 clearances must meet the minimum
value as described in ICAO Annex 14.

4. 180° turn on a given runway width

For this manoeuvre, the pavement width is considered to be the runway width, which is a frozen
parameter (30m, 45m or 60m). As per the “180 deg turn on runway” standard operating procedures
described in the Flight Crew Operating Manuals (FCOM), the aircraft is initially angled with respect
to runway centerline when starting the 180 deg turn. The value of this angle depends on the
aircraft type, and is mentioned in the FCOM. During the turn, M1, M2 and M3 clearances must
meet the minimum value as described in ICAO Annex 14.

Note to the table: “Manoeuvre not possible”

means that it is not possible for the aircraft
to turn on such runway width while
maintaining the minimum ICAO
recommended margin.
