Introduction
Why compensating or pole face windings ?
To over come the flash over or arcing effect
across commutator segments
To neutralize the armature reaction
To provide the compensation to the armature
flux under pole shoe
Mechanism
● TTT TTTTTTTTTT TTTTTTT TTTTTTd ≥
30 V
● Flash over or spark occurs
● Short circuit across
commutator periphery
● Load on dc generator
suddenly thrown away
● Load on dc motor
increased low value to
larger
Wave form without compensating
winding
Wave form with
compensating windings
Observations
● These are concentric
windings
● Connected in series with
brushes
● Reduces the armature
inductance
● Thus quicker dynamic
response in dc machine where
time constant reduced
● Avoids flash overs or arcing
effects across commutator
Circuit diagram

These windings
are connected
in series in
order to
maintain their
m.m.fs in
proportion to
the same
current & their
m.m.fs must
oppose each
other.
Formulae of compensating windings

                   Ia = Armature current
                   Z = Total armature conductors
a = Number of parallel paths
                   P = Number of poles
ATc = Ampere turns of compensating windings

Applications
Advantages :
● Enhances the field winding to have full control over
the air gap flux
● Maintains uniform flux distribution under the faces
of main poles
● Used under heavy loads or the load fluctuates
rapidly, e.g. motors driving in steel-mills
Disadvantages :
● In complete neutralization in inter polar region
● Most expensive
