Flamenco Basics
The third arpeggio exercise is a very common combination pattern. This means that we combine our primary
arpeggios (from lesson 1 & 2) to come up with longer, more complex patterns (like this one).
This arpeggio pattern is a combination of p-i-m-a and p-a-m-i.
It´s played with your thumb, index, middle, ring finger, middle and index finger. …. p-i-m-a-m-i.
Although 4/4 is by far the most common time signature, another popular choice is 6/8.
The time signature of this 6-note-arpeggio-pattern is 6/8 counted as six eighth notes.
In 6/8 the accents are on beat 1 & 4.

V V V V V V V V Place your thumb on the low E-string and plant your fingers i,m and a on the G,B and E-string
p plays the low E-string with rest stroke
i plays with free stroke towards the palm
m plays towards the palm
While the ringfinger „a“ is playing the high E-string, m is planted on the B-string
While the middle finger is playing the B-string, i is planted on the G-string
After the index finger is playing the G-string, all fingers are back in the palm position
Now we start with the thumb again...
If you don´t feel comfortable or have any difficulties with the exercise, then split it into two exercises.
One exercise for the thumb (you can find it in "Arpeggio Lesson 1") and one exercise for your fingers.

3.6. Capo/Cejilla
Maestro Patiño, born in Cadiz in 1829 - 1902, is credited with the invention of the cejilla or capo d'astro (capo)
Musicians commonly use a capo to raise the pitch of a fretted instrument so they can play in a different key
using the same fingerings as playing open (without a capo). Anyway, the reason for the capo is to retain the
"aire" or atmosphere and still be able to transpose for a singers range. Another nice aspect is, due to the lower
string action it sounds more flamenco.
