Catriona Gray Conquered the Miss
Universe 2018
I. Miss Universe 2018
A. Catriona Gray from the Philippines was crowned the new Miss universe

Miss Universe is an annual international pageant that is run by the American-Based Miss
Universe Organization. It airs in more than 190 countries worldwide and seen by more than half
a billion people annually. Along with the Miss World, Miss International, and Miss Earth, Miss
Universe is one of the Big Four International Beauty Pageants.

The organization who currently owns and runs the beauty pageants like Miss Universe,
Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA Beauty Contest is the Miss Universe Organization. The
organization is based in New York and owned by the talent agency, William Morris Endeavor
(WME) who also owns the International Management Group (IMG) which is a global sports,
events and talent management company.

B. Background of Miss Universe

In the Pageant history there are three more Filipinas who won the Miss Universe. The first
one is Gloria Diaz. She was only 18 years old that time and studying in college when she was
scouted by a pageant aficionado and convinced her to join the 6th edition of the Binibining
Pilipinas Beauty pageant and luckily won it. She then once again charmed the audience and
judges in her answer to the final question and was crowned as the Miss Universe on July 1969.
Gloria Diaz became the first ever Filipina who won the Miss Universe.

The 2nd Filipina who won the pageant is Margarita Moran. She joined the pageant
Binibining Pilipinas at the age of 19. Shen then won the rights to represent the Philippines in the
Miss Universe 1973 that was held in Athens, Greece. The 19 year old beauty won the title Miss
Universe 1973 and also won the Miss Photogenic title.

Pia Wurtzbach is the 3rd Filipina who won in the pageant. The crowning of Pia is the most
talked about and controversial moments in the pageant history because of the failed
announcement. She had several attempts before she won the title Binibining Pilipinas Universe
2015. The big pageant was held in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States on December 20, 2015.
Because of her answer she won the title as the Miss Universe 2015, her answer also reflects the
pageant’s motto ‘confidently beautiful’.
The Miss Universe Organization is an organization that celebrates women of all cultures
and backgrounds. They help them to realize and empower their goals through an experience
and to also build their self-confidence. It helps them to empower their personal, professional
and philanthropic goals through experience. All the contestants and titleholders that have gone
through Miss Universe systems are able to develop their personal career goals and to voice out
to the world their advocates in the humanitarian issues and for the betterment of the world.

II. Catriona Gray’s Life

A. Catriona Grey: Already making the pageant rounds at a young age

Before we enter the coronation night, let’s check first how beautiful her life is. Catriona
Gray joined her first ever pageant at the age of five in Little Miss Philippines. She was also a Miss
World contender in 2016 in which she lost the crown, a verdict dubbed an injustice by fans.
Looking back, it's safe to say her story of defeat helped her rise from the ashes and earn her
place in a bigger arena. Another interesting anecdote about her pageant history is that at the
age of 13, her mother Normita Magnayon claimed to have dreamt that Catriona won Miss
Universe in a red dress.

B. History of getting involved in the pageant

There were pageants wherein she competed before crowning as Miss Universe 2018
starting in August 2016.Catriona Gray confirmed she was joining Miss World Philippines 2016
(The competition to represent the country in the Miss World pageant was then a separate
competition from Bb Pilipinas).

Second is on October 2016, Catriona Gray participated in Miss World Philippines. She
was crowned as the new Miss World Philippines.

Third pageant is on December 2016. Catriona Gray went on to participate in the Miss
World 2016 in United States. She made it to the final Top 5 in the competition. She succeeded
and finished second in the talent round of the competition.

Fourth one is in January 2018. On January 8, Catriona came to the BPCI office and
submitted her form. Unsurprisingly, Catriona made it to the official line up of candidates for the
pageant.

Fifth, which is second to the last happened in March 2018, Catriona competed in
Binibining Pilipinas 2018, where she was crowned as the 2018 Miss Universe Philippines.
And lastly this December 2018, Catriona Gray represented the Philippines at the 2018
Miss Universe held in Thailand, where she was crowned new Miss Universe 2018.

Catriona Gray works as a commercial model before becoming a beauty queen. She was
also inspired by her best friend, Miss World 2014 Valerie Weigmann, who was also involved in
charity work.
Valerie Weignmann was able to draw people to the cause. Catriona was inspired because
of this. That's how Catriona pursued pageantry because she didn't realize how big of a platform
that it would give you or your cause. 'Yun ang realization ko," Gray recalled.

C. Slaying by her bod

One of the reasons why Catriona Gray slayed in the 2018 Miss Universe Pageant is
because of having a height of 1.78 meters (5ft.10 in), a weight of 55 kilograms, 33.5 in inches
chest size, a waist line of 27 inches and a hip size of 37 inches.

In addition, Catriona Gray has brown color of hair and eye that also added to her
features to have perfect look.

III. Preparations of Catriona Grey in Miss universe 2018

Now let’s take a look how Catriona deserves the crown as we had a glimpse of her
preparations for the Miss Universe 2018. Starting from the gowns she wears before, during and
after the coronation night.

SINAG

"Sinag" was the gown Catriona wore when she was crowned Bb Pilipinas 2018, making
her the country's official representative to the Miss Universe pageant.

ADARNA

"Adarna" was the gown she wore during the preliminaries of the pageant. ADARNA: The
Blazing Siren

The 'Ibong Adarna' is a mythological pulchritudinous bird that could change in several
fascinating guises. This makes it a fitting symbol of resilience, rising and rebirth. Catriona has a
resilient, tenacious and unwavering spirit. Her voice is truly captivating literally and figuratively.
She uses it to influence, advance her timely causes and both melt and heal hearts. Her will-
power and burning passion drive her to make every Filipino proud in whatever she does. She is
the blazing Adarna.

MAYON

"Mayon" was the gown she wore when she was crowned Miss Universe 2018. Tumang
likened Gray to Daragang Magayon, a legendary princess heroine at the center of a local legend
about the Mayon’s creation. “Catriona can be considered as the modern-day Daragang
Magayon. She embodies the Filipina’s beauty, intelligence and burning passion,” Tumang said.

PERLA ORIENTE

Catriona Gray's third Miss Universe gown choice is a one-shoulder gown in teal blue and
gold, dubbed “Perla Oriente” or “Pearl of the Orient Seas.” Pearl of the Orient Seas is the
byname given to our beautiful country, the Philippines. Even our National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal
referred the country with this sobriquet in his poem: Mi último adios.

LAVA WALK

Ever since the preliminary competition, people couldn’t stop talking about Catriona
Gray’s “lava walk” and slow-mo twirl. It wasn’t the usual pageant walk where women are
expected to remain poised with two hands on the waist as they smize at the camera. She really
commanded the runway and her mentor Carlos Buendia, Jr. (“Caloy” to many) made sure of that
while choreographing that walk. It was basically thanks to muscle memory that the beauty
queen was able to achieve the signature twirl. From there, Caloy was able to formulate how
Catriona would move and project while walking based on her body proportions. He was also the
one who told her to pose with just one arm placed on the crook of her back at the end of the
runway.

Glam team: persons behind her stunning look

Without Catriona's glam team she wouldn't completely own the title "miss universe". A
glam team is bunch of talented beauty professionals. It can be a stylist, shoe designer, gown
designer, hair stylist and many more. Just like what Jonas Empire said who is a part of the glam
team as well "give credit where credit is due". Jojo bragais her shoe designer, Mak Tumang the
one who made that fierh and sophisticated evening gown, Carlos Buendia Jr. Her runway coach,
Brent Sales her Hair stylist, Justin Aliman her stylist and the others Ton Lao, Harley Tan, Bb.
Pilipinas Gines Enriquez, Nicole Cordoves and Erickson Raymundo of Cornerstone. Those people
have played a huge role on Catriona's win.
IV. Miss Universe Coronation Night
A. Top 20 finalist: For the first time in the competition’s history, finalist share
their personal statement

For the 67th Miss Universe coronation night, for the first time in the history of the pageant,
the 20 semi-finalists were asked to share a 15-second statement about them. The top finalists of

B. Personalities who make the night extra special

Different personalities made the coronation night unforgettable namely; Steve Harvey
who hosted the global event together with Ashley Graham, an entrepreneur and body activist,
along with them is the style guru Carson Kressley and the supermodel and pageant expert Lu
Sierra who provided the commentary and analysis throughout the competition. There are 7
judges in the Miss Universe Coronation night namely; Richelle Singson-Michael, she’s an
architect and training to be Businesswoman. Monique Lhuillier, a famous designer. Michelle
Mclean is a 25 years television host, emcee speaker, an entrepreneur and philanthropist. Janaye
Ingram, is called an “impressive leader who plays an important role in our progress toward the

2008 hit song Miss Indipendent which he sang during the final walk.

Angela Ponce, Miss Spain, made history in 2018 as the first transgender contestant in the
66-year-old Miss Universe pageant.

Angela Ponce, better known as the reigning Miss Spain, failed to make the cut, but she is
a queen in all ways. She may have failed to make it to the Top 20 but the spotlight still blazed
over Spain's Miss Universe bet Angela Ponce, the first transgender hopeful in the pageant's
history. Simply by representing her country this year, Ponce became the first transgender
woman to compete in Miss Universe. After the preliminary rounds, the 27-year-old model said it
was her honor and pride to be part of the history of the pageant.

V. Patriotism of Catriona Gray in the Philippines

A. Advocacy of Catriona Gray

Showing love for the country is not only representing the flag to the Miss Universe but as
well as being one of the advocates to shaken up the Filipinos to see the real problem of our own
country. Children’s welfare is an important thing to Catriona that’s why she supported one of
non-government organizations whom advocate is to support financial needs of children, and it
is the Young Focus Philippines wherein the financial needs for 2019 is already covered. Catriona
shared to her Instagram account some good news: “I am so grateful and proud to learn today
that since winning miss universe; my young focus family has received amazing amounts of
support.”
The kids of Tondo played a big part in Gray’s answer during the question and answer
portion of the coveted international pageant last December. In fact, Gray had been active in
volunteer work for Young Focus Philippines even before she joined Binibining Pilipinas.
Another advocacy that she supported is the Love Yourself Philippines. It is an
organization that offers free testing, education and treatment to those living with HIV/AIDS. She
started being an advocate of this foundation when she loses a close friend because of the virus.
Catriona once says that “It took losing a good friend of mine at the age of 26. It didn’t just seem
fair that at that age, that you haven’t been given that chance to go about your life and is just
snatched away from you from something that can be prevented.”

As a closing line to that, she said that ‘now is the right time to take action, saing that
she’s so happy a lot of people are getting together to try and prevent the number of HIV/AIDS
cases from growing.’

B. Campaign material for Miss Universe

Using the campaign material, Miss Universe Philippines 2018 Catriona Gray showed her
love for the country's culture in a video showcasing the country's rich heritage and traditions.
The video was posted Sunday, December 9. In partnership with the Department of Tourism she
shows her traipsing around the beautiful landmarks of Luzon, including Intramuros, Rizal Park,
Pampanga, and Angono in Rizal. She shows off local arts and craftsmanship, saying “As an artist,
I know how art is a reflection of the world around you. That’s what makes the Philippines have
color in our history, but it’s really the art that colored it for us.” For the Visayas leg of her video,
Catriona traveled to Tacloban and spoke to a survivor of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) who
lost family members. "How is it that they could lose so much and still find a reason to keep on
going? So maybe, I thought, the answer could lie in the history of Leyte," Catriona said in the
video. She then spoke with local historians and artists about Yolanda and Filipino culture.
“There’s a warrior inside all of us and there’s a warrior inside Filipinos,” she concluded. Costume
designer Jearson Demavivas was also interviewed about the inspiration for the body suit he
made for Catriona’s national costume. And lastly for her Mindanao video, Catriona traveled to
South Cotabato, where she met the T'boli. The T'boli is known as "dream weavers" because of
their textiles. Countless Filipino designers have used their products to create clothes and
accessories. Catriona also learned their rituals and dances. She also participated in one of their
festivals.

Filipinos are known for being hospitable and Catriona bring that in the country of
Thailand. Since her arrival at Bangkok, Thailand where the Miss Universe will be held, Catriona
has been an eye catcher to everyone. She was greeted by many Filipino and Thai fans upon her
arrival and even featured on Thai TV stations. She was getting a warm welcome in Thailand.
